If you want an Android phone that is easier to repair but don’t want a Fairphone, start with the HMD Skyline for hands-on repairability, or a supported Google Pixel if you value detailed manuals and access to genuine parts. Recent Samsung Galaxy S25 models have some service-friendly components, but adhesive can make key repairs harder. The right choice depends on the specific repair, local parts and service availability, and how long the phone will receive software support—not on a repairability score alone.

How to choose a repairable Android phone

Repairability is more than whether a battery can be removed. iFixit’s scorecard frames a repairable product as one that is straightforward to disassemble and fix with parts and instructions supplied or endorsed by its manufacturer. In practice, assess the repair you are most likely to need, whether parts and instructions are accessible where you live, and whether you can use self-service, an authorized shop, an independent repairer, or mail-in service.

  • Repair difficulty: A phone can make one repair simple while leaving another—such as replacing the charging port—difficult.
  • Parts and instructions: Confirm that compatible parts and model-specific manuals are available, not merely that the phone is described as repairable.
  • Local repair options: Manufacturers support different combinations of in-house, authorized, independent, and self-service repair. Availability varies by company and market.
  • Software support and ownership cost: Check the support period and compare the phone’s price and repair costs in your country. The sources cited here do not establish a market-wide repair-cost or lifespan comparison.

Best candidates if you don’t want a Fairphone

Phone Why consider it Repair trade-off Best for
HMD Skyline Easy opening mechanism; screen and battery repairs are prioritized; HMD supports common replacement parts and instructions. Battery adhesive takes extra work to clean and replace. Parts and guides depend on regional availability. People who put hands-on repairability first.
Google Pixel 10 Google provides repair manuals and genuine parts; iFixit notes improved battery and charging-port access compared with its Pixel 9 observations. Adhesive remains across many components. Self-repair requires relevant skills. People who want a mainstream phone with a documented repair path.
Other supported Google Pixel models Google says manuals and genuine parts are available for Pixel 6a and newer models. Repairability differs by generation and component; do not assume the Pixel 10 assessment applies to every Pixel. Buyers who want to check support for a particular Pixel model.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge / S25 Ultra iFixit notes easier battery removal and modular charging ports on these models. Adhesive-only screen and back-cover attachment makes those repairs harder. The displayed S25 Ultra score is provisional. Samsung buyers willing to accept repair compromises.

HMD Skyline: the strongest repair-first alternative

For someone who wants to open and repair a phone themselves, the HMD Skyline is the clearest candidate in this group. iFixit describes its camshaft opening mechanism as easy to use and says the design prioritizes screen and battery repairs. It also notes that HMD support offers replacement parts and instructions for common repairs. HMD’s repair guide lists the back cover, charging port, battery, and screen as replaceable components on its repairable phones, subject to regional parts and guide availability.

There is a practical caveat: iFixit says the battery adhesive takes extra effort to clean and replace. Before buying, check whether HMD or its parts provider serves your country and whether the exact Skyline parts and instructions you need are currently available. A repair-oriented design is less useful if replacement parts cannot be obtained locally.

Google Pixel: a documented repair route, with model-by-model differences

Google says repair manuals and genuine parts are available for Pixel 6a and newer phones. Its help resources also describe diagnostics; the diagnostics guidance covers Pixel 3 and later. Google cautions that self-repair can cause injury or device damage and recommends it only for people with relevant technical skills. If you are not equipped for a repair, check which professional options are practical in your area.

What changes between Pixel generations

iFixit’s Pixel 10 assessment notes prioritized screen repair, a back glass that can be removed without heat, and improved access for battery and charging-port repairs. It also identifies adhesive-secured components as a continuing limitation. Its Pixel 9 notes describe a stubbornly glued battery and a difficult charging-port repair path. These observations are model-specific: verify the manual and parts for the exact Pixel you are considering rather than treating the entire range as equally repairable.

Samsung Galaxy S25: some improvements, but not an easy-repair verdict

For the Galaxy S25 Edge and S25 Ultra, iFixit notes easier battery removal and modular charging ports. However, adhesive securing the screen and back cover makes those repairs harder. The S25 Ultra’s displayed iFixit score is provisional, so it should not be treated as a final rating or ranked directly against completed assessments. Consider these models if you prefer Samsung and value those component choices, but weigh the likely repair against the adhesive drawback.

Use Fairphone Gen. 6 as a benchmark, not as a pick

Fairphone is excluded from this shortlist, but it helps define what a more extensively modular phone looks like. Fairphone’s current Gen. 6 product page lists 12 user-replaceable spare parts and says its battery, display, USB-C port, and back cover can each be swapped in under five minutes. That timing is a manufacturer statement, not an independent timed test. The page also lists parts and software support through 2033 and reports an iFixit score of 10/10; both the score and support claims should be attributed to Fairphone’s page.

Check these details before you buy

  1. Choose the likely repair first. Decide whether screen, battery, charging port, or back-cover replacement matters most to you; repair access differs by component.
  2. Verify exact-model support. Find the manufacturer’s manual and confirm that compatible parts are available for your specific model and country.
  3. Identify a workable repair channel. Check whether self-service, authorized, independent, or mail-in repair is offered where you live.
  4. Check software-support terms and local fit. Confirm the current support period, price, stock, and carrier compatibility for your market before ordering.
  5. Be realistic about self-repair. Follow the model’s official instructions and use a professional repairer if you lack the required skills or tools.
