A refurbished phone can be an excellent deal, but the seller matters almost as much as the model. An officially refurbished iPhone 16e with a new battery and a one-year Apple warranty is a very different purchase from a heavily used phone sold through an anonymous marketplace listing.
For most buyers, the strongest choices are the iPhone 16e, Google Pixel 8a, and Samsung Galaxy S25 Certified Re-Newed. The right choice depends on your preferred operating system, camera needs, software-support period, carrier, and how much warranty risk you are willing to accept.

1. Apple iPhone 16e: best refurbished iPhone for most people
The refurbished iPhone 16e is the easiest iPhone recommendation when you want a relatively current phone without paying new-phone pricing. Apple’s listed price is $419 for an unlocked 128GB model.
#1 Best Overall

- Fluid display + immersive stereo sound. Bring your entertainment to life with an ultrawide 6.5" 90Hz* HD+ display plus stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos, and Hi-Res Audio**.
- 50MP*** Quad Pixel camera. Capture sharper, more vibrant photos day or night with 4x the light sensitivity.
- 64GB**** built-in storage. Get plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps—and add up to 1TB more with a microSD card*****.
- Unbelievable battery life. Work and play nonstop with a long-lasting 5000mAh battery.*****
It uses Apple’s A18 chip, supports Apple Intelligence, has a USB-C port, and uses an OLED display. Apple rates it for up to 26 hours of video playback. The most important advantage is the refurbishment itself: Apple says its refurbished iPhones receive a new battery and outer shell, include accessories, and come with a one-year limited warranty and a 14-day return policy.
Choose the iPhone 16e if you prioritize reliable Apple support, long-term performance, and low refurbishment risk. Its main compromise is the simpler camera system compared with the iPhone 16.
2. Apple iPhone 16: best refurbished iPhone camera upgrade
The refurbished iPhone 16 costs $619 for 128GB unlocked in Apple’s current listing. It retains the A18 platform but adds a dual-camera system and Camera Control, making it more flexible for photography.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The iPhone 16 is the better choice if you regularly use an ultrawide camera or want a more complete camera setup. At the listed prices, it costs substantially more than the 16e, so the extra expense makes sense mainly for camera flexibility rather than everyday speed.
3. Apple iPhone 15: best iPhone value when the price is genuinely lower
The iPhone 15 remains appealing because it has a 48MP main camera, Dynamic Island, USB-C, and the A16 Bionic chip. Apple’s listed refurbished configuration is $619 for 256GB.
That price makes the comparison with the iPhone 16 especially important. Buy the iPhone 15 when its exact storage configuration is meaningfully cheaper than a comparable iPhone 16, or when 256GB matters more to you than the newer processor. Do not assume an older model is automatically the better bargain: compare storage, warranty, and the exact unlocked listing.
4. Google Pixel 8a: best refurbished Android phone for most buyers
The Pixel 8a starts at $339 through Google’s refurbished-device program. It is the strongest general Android value here because Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of operating-system, security, and Pixel Drop updates from their US availability date.
Rank #2
- Android 13.0 Operating System: Runs on the latest Android OS for smooth performance and up-to-date features.
- Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac: Stay connected with others wirelessly and stream content at high speeds.
- 6.6" AMOLED Display: View vivid content on a large, high-resolution screen.
- Quad Camera Array: Capture stunning photos and 4K video with the advanced camera system.
- Long Battery Life: Power through the day on a large 5000mAh battery.
The Pixel 8a became available in May 2024, giving it promised support into May 2031. That remaining support is more valuable than a small saving on an older phone if you expect to keep the device for several years.
Google’s certified-refurbished phones include genuine Google parts, multipoint quality testing, battery testing, a one-year warranty, and unlocked carrier compatibility. A replacement OEM battery is used if the original battery fails Google’s standard.
5. Google Pixel 8: best Android value upgrade
The refurbished Pixel 8 starts at $459. It receives the same seven-year support commitment as the Pixel 8a but offers a higher-end display and camera system.
It is a sensible upgrade when the Pixel 8a’s camera or screen is not enough, but the Pixel 8 Pro is outside your budget. Google’s certified-refurbished version includes genuine parts, battery evaluation, a one-year warranty, and an unlocked design compatible with any carrier subject to network compatibility.
6. Google Pixel 8 Pro: best refurbished Android camera phone
The Pixel 8 Pro starts at $649. It combines Pixel’s computational photography with more advanced camera hardware and the Pixel 8-series seven-year update policy.
It is the better purchase than the standard Pixel 8 if you want a more capable camera system and intend to keep the phone through much of its support period. Buy from Google’s certified program when possible so the phone receives genuine Google parts and documented battery evaluation rather than an unspecified third-party repair history.
7. Samsung Galaxy S25: best refurbished Samsung value
Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed Galaxy S25 is listed at $599 for 128GB and $629 for 256GB. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform, includes a 50MP main camera and 3× telephoto camera, and supports Galaxy AI features.

Samsung says Certified Re-Newed phones are repaired with genuine Samsung parts, fitted with a certified new battery, assigned a new IMEI, updated with current software, and tested through 147 quality checkpoints. The phones are unlocked for compatible carriers and include a one-year manufacturer warranty.
The 256GB model costs only $30 more in the listed pricing, making it the more attractive option if you keep large games, photos, or offline video on your phone.
8. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: best refurbished Samsung camera and productivity phone
The refurbished Galaxy S25 Ultra is listed at $979. It is aimed at buyers who want Samsung’s largest flagship hardware, advanced camera controls, and Ultra-series productivity features.
Its listed camera hardware includes a 200MP wide camera, 12MP ultrawide camera, and 3× and 10× optical telephoto cameras. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite and is available with 256GB or 512GB storage. This is not the budget pick, but it can be a strong alternative to buying a new flagship when the S Pen, large display, and long-range photography justify the price.
9. Google Pixel 7a: best budget refurbished phone
The Pixel 7a starts at $289, making it one of the least expensive official refurbished choices. It remains a good low-cost phone, but its support period is the critical limitation.
Recommended Free Tools
The Pixel 7a became available in May 2023 and receives five years of updates, implying support through May 2028. If the Pixel 8a costs only moderately more, the newer phone’s seven-year policy makes it the better long-term purchase. Choose the 7a when your budget is strict and the shorter remaining support period is acceptable.
Where to buy a refurbished phone
Apple Certified Refurbished
Apple performs functional testing, cleaning, and inspection, uses genuine Apple replacement parts when needed, and supplies refurbished iPhones with a new battery and outer shell. You also get accessories, a one-year limited warranty, free shipping and returns, and a 14-day return period. Eligible devices can be covered by AppleCare.

The trade-off is selection. Apple’s stock is limited, models can disappear without notice, and an item is not reserved until checkout is completed and payment is authorized.
Google Certified Refurbished
Google’s program is the safest route for a refurbished Pixel. It includes genuine Google parts, multipoint testing, battery evaluation, unlocked phones, the latest applicable software before shipment, and a new one-year warranty.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSamsung Certified Re-Newed
Samsung’s program provides genuine Samsung parts, a certified new battery, a new IMEI, current software, 147-point testing, and a one-year manufacturer warranty. It is preferable to an unspecified marketplace listing if camera parts, battery condition, and warranty support matter.
Back Market
Back Market is a marketplace, not one refurbishment center. Individual sellers refurbish the phones. Listings use Premium, Excellent, Good, and Fair grades. All grades should be functional, but non-Premium devices may contain compatible rather than manufacturer-original parts. Back Market guarantees at least 80% battery capacity, while Premium devices are described as having genuine manufacturer parts and batteries with at least 90% capacity.
Back Market offers 30-day returns and a seller-provided one-year limited warranty. The warranty does not cover normal battery-capacity decline, liquid damage, major impact damage, or unauthorized repairs. Check the seller, parts disclosure, battery terms, and exact return conditions before paying.
Best Buy
Best Buy distinguishes between pre-owned and refurbished listings. Its current pre-owned-phone information says phones are inspected, unlocked, cleaned, and covered by a 90-day warranty. Geek Squad Certified Refurbished products commonly also have 90-day coverage, but the individual product page controls. Best Buy is useful if you value store pickup, in-person returns, or local support.
Amazon Renewed
Amazon Renewed is a seller program rather than a manufacturer refurbishment service. Amazon’s current policy generally provides a 90-day return, refund, or replacement period for unsatisfactory Renewed purchases. Renewed Premium listings may have different terms, so verify the seller, warranty, condition, carrier status, and return policy on the specific listing.

Refurbished-phone checks that prevent expensive mistakes
- Match the exact model and storage. “iPhone 15” or “Galaxy S25” may refer to different capacities, carrier variants, and regional models. Compare the complete listing, not just the headline model name.
- Confirm carrier status. On an iPhone, open
Settings > General > Aboutand check that Carrier Lock says No SIM restrictions. On Android, check the seller’s unlocked claim and verify network support. - Run the IMEI through your carrier. An unlocked phone can still lack the right bands or fail a carrier’s eligibility rules. Obtain the IMEI and use the intended carrier’s BYOD checker before transferring your number.
- Reject account-locked phones. Never accept an iPhone displaying iPhone Locked to Owner. A factory reset does not remove Activation Lock; the previous owner must remove the phone from their Apple Account. On Android, setup must not request the previous owner’s Google account.
- Inspect battery information. On iPhone, open
Settings > Battery > Battery HealthorSettings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Check Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and warnings. A displayed 100% is not proof of a genuine new battery, particularly when the battery cannot be verified. - Check iPhone repair history. Open
Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. “Genuine Apple Part” is the reassuring label. “Unknown” can indicate a nongenuine, reused, improperly installed, or malfunctioning part. - Test every important function before the return deadline. Make a call, test mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, flash, microphones, speakers, vibration, Face ID or fingerprint unlock, charging, buttons, touchscreen, GPS, NFC payments, and SIM or eSIM activation.
- Assume water resistance is no longer guaranteed. A phone’s original IP rating can be weakened by age, drops, opening, disassembly, or repair. Do not deliberately expose a refurbished phone to water.
Common refurbished-phone claims that are misleading
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “Refurbished means manufacturer-refurbished.” | Only official programs from Apple, Google, and Samsung are manufacturer-operated. Marketplaces use individual refurbishers or sellers. |
| “Excellent condition means original parts.” | Cosmetic grades do not necessarily identify parts. On Back Market, genuine manufacturer parts are guaranteed for Premium listings, not every grade. |
| “Unlocked works on every carrier.” | The phone must also support the carrier’s bands, software requirements, SIM or eSIM setup, and device eligibility rules. |
| “Factory reset removes Activation Lock.” | It does not. The former iPhone owner must remove the device from their Apple Account. |
| “IP68 means a refurbished phone is waterproof.” | Water resistance is not permanent and may be compromised by wear or repair. |
| “Every refurbished warranty is the same.” | Official Apple, Google, and Samsung programs provide one year; Best Buy commonly provides 90 days; Back Market’s one-year warranty is seller-provided; Amazon Renewed generally provides 90 days. |
FAQ
What is the best refurbished phone overall?
The iPhone 16e is the best refurbished choice for most iPhone buyers because it combines an A18 chip, Apple Intelligence support, USB-C, an OLED display, and Apple’s new-battery, new-outer-shell refurbishment process. For Android, choose the Google Pixel 8a for its price and seven-year update commitment.
Is it safer to buy a refurbished phone directly from the manufacturer?
Usually, yes. Apple, Google, and Samsung specify their testing, parts, battery standards, and one-year manufacturer warranties. Marketplace sellers can offer lower prices and more selection, but you must verify the seller, condition grade, battery minimum, parts, IMEI status, and return policy.
How much battery health should a refurbished phone have?
There is no universal number across sellers. Check the listing’s written minimum rather than relying on a cosmetic grade. On iPhone, inspect Battery Health and any genuine-part or degraded-battery warnings. A claimed 100% capacity on a third-party listing does not by itself prove the battery is new or genuine.
Can a refurbished phone be unlocked but incompatible with my carrier?
Yes. Unlocked status only removes a carrier lock. The phone must also support your carrier’s network bands, software requirements, SIM or eSIM configuration, and eligibility rules. Check the IMEI with the carrier’s BYOD tool before activation.
The Bottom Line
Buy the iPhone 16e from Apple for the lowest-risk inexpensive iPhone purchase. Buy the Pixel 8a from Google for the best balance of Android price and remaining software support. Choose the Galaxy S25 Certified Re-Newed for Samsung hardware, a telephoto camera, Galaxy AI, and a certified new battery.
Manufacturer programs cost more than some marketplace listings, but they provide clearer parts standards, battery testing, warranty coverage, and support. If you use Back Market, Best Buy, or Amazon Renewed, verify the exact model, storage, unlocked status, IMEI compatibility, account-lock status, battery terms, seller, and return deadline before keeping the phone.
