The right projector under $500 depends on where you’ll use it. For a brighter living room, RTINGS names the Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02 its best overall pick; for films in a fully dark room, it points to the higher contrast of the NexiGo PJ40 Pro. The Epson is listed at $499.99 in Epson’s US catalog, putting it exactly at—not below—the budget ceiling.
Quick picks by use
| Need | Model | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Brighter living-room viewing | Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02 | RTINGS names it the best under-$500 pick and says its brightness suits casual living-room use. Epson lists 3,000 lumens for both color and white brightness. |
| Movies in a fully dark room | NexiGo PJ40 Pro | RTINGS says its stronger contrast can add depth to dark-room movie viewing. It is not as bright as the Epson. |
| Lower-cost shortlist | Wanbo X5 Pro | RTINGS lists it as its cheap pick and identifies native 1080p resolution and LED light source. Check current price and stock. |
| Portable use | XGIMI Vibe One | RTINGS lists it as its cheap portable pick and identifies native 1080p resolution and LED light source. Compare its brightness and image quality with plug-in models. |
| Responsive 1080p/60Hz gaming | Anker Nebula P1i | RTINGS calls it its gaming pick because of low input lag at 1080p/60Hz, while noting substantial image and feature limits. |
These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that every model remains under $500 in every region or at every retailer. RTINGS notes that prices and availability can change its recommendations; confirm the live price before buying. The cited prices and availability are US-oriented.
Best for a brighter room: Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02
The CO-FH02 is the most straightforward starting point if you expect some ambient light, such as casual TV viewing in a living room. RTINGS names it the best projector under $500 in its roundup updated July 7, 2026, and says it is bright enough for casual living-room use. That is not a promise of a vivid image in direct sunlight or a brightly lit room; room light still affects the picture.

Epson’s US catalog, accessed September 28, 2026, displays the projector at $499.99. It specifies Full HD 1080p, 3,000 lumens of color brightness and 3,000 lumens of white brightness, HDMI and USB connections, a 5 W speaker, and an included Android TV streaming stick. The listed price reaches the $500 limit, so taxes or price changes could put the total over budget. Check the live listing before purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- Note: For the best viewing experience, we recommend a 5.2ft distance for a 80" screen. Please also upgrade to the latest firmware for optimal performance.
- Enhanced Clarity and Brightness: With 200 ANSI and an 2000:1 contrast ratio, this projector provides sufficient brightness for casual movie watching, kids' shows, or gaming. Additionally, the 5W SoundBase Speaker enhances both the visual and auditory experience, giving you rich sound and clear images without the need for external speakers.
- Versatile and Portable Design: This mini proyector offers flexibility with ceiling mounting, table placement, tripod installation, or 180-degree rotation. Weighing only 0.88lb, it easily adapts to any space or occasion.
- Built-in Multiple Apps: This projector with WiFi and Bluetooth offers seamless access to 1,000,000 videos with a single click, eliminating the need for an external TV stick. Dive into endless entertainment with one device, ideal for home theaters or outdoor movie nights, or portable use.
- Intuitive and Precise Control: Our projector comes with an advanced Air Mouse remote that combines a traditional remote and mouse into one, offering seamless navigation and precise pointer control. It supports voice commands for hands-free adjustments.
Manufacturer brightness figures help describe a model, but do not compare all projectors perfectly across brands or measurement methods. Brightness also does not tell you how much detail the projector resolves or how much depth dark scenes retain.
Best for dark-room movies: NexiGo PJ40 Pro
If you can darken the room, contrast may matter more to film viewing than maximum brightness. RTINGS says the NexiGo PJ40 Pro’s stronger contrast can make it a better movie choice in a fully dark room, but also says it is not as bright as the Epson. That trade-off makes it a room-specific alternative, not the obvious pick for a living room with substantial light.

Best low-lag option: Anker Nebula P1i
RTINGS names the Nebula P1i its gaming pick for low input lag at 1080p/60Hz. That can help keep the on-screen response closer to controller input, but it does not make this a high-end gaming projector. RTINGS also notes that the P1i is dim, has weak contrast and a narrow color gamut, does not accept 4K signals, and does not support 120Hz gaming.

Choose it for the specific 1080p/60Hz responsiveness use case, not for 4K input, high-refresh play, or a bright-room image. Check the exact model’s current price and availability for your market.
Cheaper and portable shortlist options
Wanbo X5 Pro
RTINGS lists the Wanbo X5 Pro as its cheap pick and gives it native 1080p resolution with an LED light source. “Cheap pick” is a relative label in that roundup; the evidence does not establish a lasting price or guarantee that it is currently under $500. Verify the live listing and stock.

XGIMI Vibe One
RTINGS lists the XGIMI Vibe One as its cheap portable pick, with native 1080p resolution and an LED light source. Portability can be useful if you move the projector between rooms or take it outdoors, but it does not automatically match a plug-in model for brightness or image quality. Compare those trade-offs against how and where you will watch, and verify current price and availability.
Outdoor viewing: plan for darkness and a suitable surface
Outdoor projection works best when you manage ambient light; do not expect a typical portable projector to overcome daylight. What Hi-Fi?’s outdoor-projector guidance, updated July 6, 2026, notes that projecting onto a white sheet or wall can compromise picture quality and suggests considering a portable projector screen. A screen is an optional setup choice, not a requirement, and the right surface depends on your space and how you plan to set it up.
Why lumens alone do not determine the best projector
A projector marketed with a high lumen figure may be designed for a different job than movie viewing. ViewSonic’s US specification page lists the PA503X at 4,000 lumens, but its native resolution is XGA (1024×768), not Full HD. The page also lists HDMI, two VGA inputs, VGA output, composite video, and up to 15,000 hours of lamp life in SuperEco mode. The reviewed page does not establish that its current price is under $500, so it is a presentation-oriented contrast rather than a verified pick for this budget list.
For home viewing, weigh native resolution and contrast alongside brightness. Also distinguish a projector’s native resolution—the detail it can display—from the formats it accepts as input. A large lumen number by itself does not establish a better film image.
Quick Recap
How to choose among these picks
- Start with room light. For casual viewing with some ambient light, consider the Epson’s brightness advantage. For movies in a fully dark room, the NexiGo’s stronger contrast may matter more.
- Set the image-quality floor. Check native resolution rather than relying only on a compatible input format or a brightness claim. For gaming, confirm the resolution, refresh rate, and input-lag characteristics that matter to your setup.
- Decide whether portability is worth the trade-off. A portable model can be easier to move, but compare its brightness and image quality with a plug-in projector for your intended room.
- Account for streaming and connections. The Epson listing includes an Android TV streaming stick and specifies HDMI and USB. Check the connections and streaming arrangement on any alternative rather than assuming they are equivalent.
- Confirm the real purchase price. The Epson is listed at the budget cap, while prices and stock for the other named models must be checked at the time and place you buy.
