The best project time tracker depends on what you need the recorded hours to do. Choose Toggl Track if you want time capture alongside estimates, budget alerts, and profitability reporting; Harvest if you need to connect billable time with approvals and client invoices; or Asana if your team already plans work there and wants time recorded on tasks. These are documented-feature matches, not a tested ranking.
What makes a project time tracker useful?
A project time tracker connects entries to projects or tasks, then turns those entries into information people can act on: actual time versus estimates, budget progress, workload, billable hours, or invoices. A timer alone may record hours, but the project and reporting links determine whether those hours help with planning or client work.
Before choosing, identify the result you need. If the priority is low-friction time entry, compare how each tool supports timers and manual entries. If it is project control, look for estimate-versus-actual reporting and budget warnings. For client services, check approvals, billable rates, expense handling, and invoice creation. Also distinguish features included in a plan from those available only in higher tiers or as an add-on.

Harvest is the clearest workflow match among these options when the goal is to turn tracked client work into billing, while also monitoring budgets or capacity. How to choose without overbuying
- Define the output. Decide whether you mainly need a record of time, estimate and budget control, approvals, workload visibility, billable reporting, or invoices.
- Map entries to work. Check whether staff can record time against the project or task structure they already use, and whether the available timer and manual-entry options suit their routines.
- Trace the reporting path. Confirm that the tool reports the specific outcome you need, such as estimate versus actual, budget progress, utilization, costs, or billable time.
- Check plan boundaries. Identify which features are included in the proposed tier and which require a higher tier or separate add-on. Verify user and project limits and current price directly with the vendor.
- Validate the handoff. If time must feed an approval process, an existing project-management tool, or client invoicing, confirm that the relevant integration or workflow is supported before migrating.
Choose by the work the tracker must support, not by a universal “best” label. Toggl Track’s documented strengths center on estimates, alerts, and profitability; Harvest connects hours to client-service administration and invoicing; Asana places time tracking inside task management, with expanded timesheet and budget functions available through an add-on.
