For a reference-design GeForce RTX 4090, NVIDIA lists 850 W as required system power, but that is not a universal guarantee for every PC. Its figure is based on a system with a Ryzen 9 5900X, and NVIDIA says a higher rating may be needed depending on the configuration. A 1000 W unit is a documented higher-capacity option for builds that need more system headroom; three models with manufacturer-listed 1000 W output and current GPU cabling or standards are compared below.

How much power does an RTX 4090 need?

NVIDIA specifies 450 W total graphics power for the reference RTX 4090 and 850 W required system power. Those figures describe different things: 450 W is the graphics card’s rating, while 850 W is the recommended capacity for the whole system under NVIDIA’s stated Ryzen 9 5900X configuration. CPU choice, overclocking and other components affect total demand. NVIDIA also cautions that add-in-board card specifications can differ from the reference design. Check the specific card maker’s PSU recommendation before buying. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications and system-preparation guidance.

Is an 850 W power supply enough?

It can meet NVIDIA’s reference-design system recommendation, but whether it is sufficient for a particular build depends on the exact graphics card and the rest of the system. The GPU maker’s recommendation for your model takes precedence, especially if the system has a high-power processor, overclocking, pumps or multiple drives. If you are choosing between an 850 W unit and a higher-capacity one, make the decision from the complete system configuration rather than treating the GPU’s 450 W rating as the PSU requirement.

Does an RTX 4090 need an ATX 3.1 power supply?

No: NVIDIA describes two power-connection approaches for the reference card. It can use three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 450 W. NVIDIA’s setup guidance also discusses three or four PCIe 8-pin cables and directs buyers to their PSU maker’s instructions. A PSU with a native, compatible 12V-2×6 or PCIe 5.x cable can simplify the connection, but verify the exact cable and GPU requirements for your models. Use only cables approved for that PSU; a modular cable that fits is not necessarily electrically compatible. See NVIDIA’s connection guidance.

How to choose the right unit for your build

  1. Check the exact RTX 4090 model. Find its maker’s PSU recommendation and connector requirements; add-in-board specifications may differ from NVIDIA’s reference design.
  2. Account for the whole PC. Consider the processor, any overclock, drives, pumps and other components when deciding how much headroom to target.
  3. Match the PSU’s cables to the card. Confirm whether you will use a compatible native 12V-2×6/PCIe 5.x cable or the card’s supplied adapter. Follow both manufacturers’ instructions and use the required number of separate PCIe leads.
  4. Check physical fit and cable access. Verify PSU dimensions, case clearance and room to route the GPU power cable. This is especially important for the RM1000x SHIFT’s side-mounted modular connectors.
  5. Compare purchase terms locally. Confirm the exact regional SKU, current stock and price, return policy and applicable warranty terms before ordering; availability and retailer pricing are not established here.
