For fast, compact storage you use while working, choose a portable SSD; for portable bulk storage where slower transfers are acceptable, an external hard drive (HDD) can make sense. Among the named SSDs here, the Samsung T7 Shield and SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD offer strong all-round feature sets, while the WD My Passport SSD is a useful reminder that real transfer speeds vary by workload. Check your device’s ports, operating-system support, required capacity and protection needs before buying.
Portable SSD or external hard drive: which suits your work?
| Factor | Portable SSD | Portable HDD |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Active projects, frequent transfers and carrying a compact drive | Portable bulk storage when slower transfers are acceptable |
| Speed | Can offer fast transfers, but actual performance depends on the host connection and workload | Generally slower than SSD storage; the supplied sources do not establish a current cross-brand speed comparison |
| Examples covered here | Samsung T7 Shield, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD and WD My Passport SSD | Toshiba Canvio Flex, with connector details to check for the exact model |
These are different tradeoffs, not interchangeable categories. A fast SSD is most useful when your computer or other host can take advantage of its interface and you regularly move or work with files. An HDD is worth considering when capacity and cost are more important to you than SSD-like transfer speed; compare current local prices and capacities before deciding, since none are established here.
Portable SSDs to consider
Samsung T7 Shield: protection features and broad compatibility
Samsung’s 2022 announcement specifies maximum sequential speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, hardware AES-256 encryption, and compatibility with PCs, Macs, Android devices and game consoles. The announced bundle includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables. Samsung’s warranty page lists a three-year limited warranty for the T7 Shield. Check the current regional product listing for the exact capacity and SKU available to you, and consult the warranty terms for coverage details.

Those speed figures are manufacturer maximums, not a promise that every computer, cable or transfer will reach them. The host port, workload and file sizes affect real results. Samsung also makes a speed comparison against a named HDD based on its own internal testing; that comparison should not be treated as a universal measure of how much faster every SSD is than every HDD. Samsung’s T7 Shield announcement describes its specifications; see Samsung’s warranty page for warranty information.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD: stated ingress and drop protection
SanDisk lists USB 3.2 Gen 2, write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s, protection against drops up to three meters, and an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance. The product page lists USB-C compatibility and support for USB Type-C devices, iOS 13 or later, Android 11 or later, macOS 11 or later, and Windows 10 or later. The stated bundle includes a USB-C cable and a USB-C-to-A adapter; SanDisk lists a five-year limited warranty.
These are manufacturer-stated features, not independent test results or guarantees that the drive will survive every fall or exposure. IP65 does not mean waterproof, and protection ratings do not prevent data loss. Verify the exact model and regional warranty terms before purchase. SanDisk’s Extreme Portable SSD product page has the listed specifications and compatibility details.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
WD My Passport SSD: compare workload-specific results, not just headline speeds
Digital Camera World reports that the WD My Passport SSD uses USB Type-C with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and is offered in multiple capacities. In that outlet’s tests, it averaged 651 MB/s read and 569 MB/s write with video files, and 538 MB/s read and 364 MB/s write with multiple image files. Those are the reviewer’s results for those workloads, not guaranteed speeds for other computers, files or transfer conditions. See Digital Camera World’s portable-drive guide and review results for its test context.
Portable HDD example: check the connector on the drive itself
Toshiba Canvio Flex
TechRadar’s 2026 coverage describes the Canvio Flex as a portable HDD with a three-year warranty and a Type-C cable, while noting that the drive itself has a micro-B connector. A cable with a USB-C plug at one end does not mean the drive has a USB-C receptacle. Check the exact model and included cable for your market before buying, particularly if you want a USB-C-to-USB-C connection. The cited coverage does not establish that every current Canvio Flex listing has the same configuration. See TechRadar’s 2026 portable SSD guide and its Mac external-drive guide.

How to choose the right drive for your devices and files
- Check the host. Identify the physical port on the computer, phone, tablet, camera or console, then check the drive’s connector, cable and adapter. Confirm operating-system and device compatibility on the manufacturer’s page; USB-C describes a connector shape, not by itself a guarantee of a particular transfer speed or device support.
- Choose capacity for your files. Estimate what you need to store now and what you expect to add. The cited product evidence does not establish a single capacity recommendation or a current capacity lineup for each regional SKU, so verify the exact version you plan to buy.
- Match performance to the task. For frequent transfers or active work, prioritize an SSD and make sure the host connection supports the performance you need. Treat advertised “up to” figures as maximum specifications, not typical results. For bulk storage that you access less often, an HDD may be sufficient if its slower transfers suit your workflow.
- Decide whether protection features matter. If you carry a drive outdoors or between locations, check the specific drop, water and dust claims. Understand their limits; no rating makes a drive immune to damage or removes the need for backups.
- Compare the complete package. Check included cables and adapters, warranty length and exclusions, encryption features if relevant, and the current local price for the exact capacity. Warranty periods are not a substitute for keeping another copy of important files.
What advertised speed and durability do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturer speed figures and independent workload results answer different questions. Samsung’s T7 Shield maximum sequential figures and SanDisk’s maximum write figure describe stated product specifications. The WD results above are measurements reported by Digital Camera World for particular file workloads. None guarantees the same result in your setup: the host device and connection, cable, file sizes and transfer pattern can all affect performance.
Likewise, a protection rating is a defined claim, not an assurance against every accident. SanDisk lists IP65 and up to three-meter drop protection for the cited product; those claims do not establish that every impact or liquid exposure is safe. Keep important files backed up separately, regardless of the drive’s ruggedness or warranty.

Warranty, regional listings and backups
The listed warranty lengths differ: Samsung specifies three years for the T7 Shield, SanDisk lists five years for the cited Extreme Portable SSD, and TechRadar’s Canvio Flex coverage describes a three-year warranty. Check the warranty terms that apply to the exact product and country; duration alone does not explain exclusions, claim requirements or remedies. A warranty also does not restore lost files, so retain a separate backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.
