There is no single best portable monitor, and the 2026 buying guides do not agree on one. The right screen depends on the job: a travel-friendly second display for a laptop, a large desk screen for an office, stylus work, premium 4K OLED image quality, high-refresh gaming, two screens in one unit, or the lowest price that still works. The eight picks below are each matched to one of those jobs, with their compromises stated.
If you searched for the best portable monitor for remote work and travel, start with the first pick and then read the connection checklist before you buy.
Match your main job to a starting pick:
- Travel and general work: MSI Pro MP165 E6
- Stylus-friendly value second screen: ViewSonic TD1656-2K
- Large screen for a desk or shared workstation: ASUS ZenScreen MB27ACF
- Premium 4K OLED image quality: ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED
- Budget high-refresh gaming: Arzopa Z1FC
- Two screens in one unit: ASUS ZenScreen Duo
- Compact premium work and travel: HP Series 5 Pro 514pn
- Entry-level budget: InnoView portable monitor
How these picks were chosen
Each pick comes from published reviews and buying guides. This article does not report lab measurements of its own; where a result is a publisher’s test, the text names that publisher.
- RTINGS buys and tests more than 30 monitors a year and overhauled its portable-monitor recommendations on September 18, 2026. Its ratings are U.S.-focused and weigh reviews, visitor feedback, price and availability.
- WIRED’s 2026 buying guide evaluated 20 portable monitors priced from $70 to nearly $700. That is WIRED’s own review sample, not a market-wide count.
- TechRadar’s 2026 guide tests build, dimensions, glare, resolution, brightness, viewing angles and color. Its recommendations and prices may change.
- PCWorld lists its picks with strengths and drawbacks, including stand quality, color, inputs and refresh-rate caveats.
- Tom’s Hardware covers use cases, kickstands, battery-powered models, and the difference between productivity and gaming refresh needs.
Because the guides favor different models, the list below is organized by job rather than by a single ranking.

What to check before you buy
Portability and setup
- Guides commonly place everyday travel screens at 14 to 16 inches. Larger screens are better treated as movable desk displays than as carry-on companions.
- Weigh the screen together with its cover, stand and cable, since that is what you will actually carry.
- Check the included cover or stand. It decides whether the screen can be propped at a usable angle on a hotel desk or café table.
- Weight and thickness are not reported for every model in the coverage cited here, so compare listings directly before buying.
Connection and power
A USB-C port that charges your laptop does not automatically send video. Work through these checks before you buy.
- Confirm that your laptop’s USB-C port supports display output. Look for video or DisplayPort support on the laptop’s specification page; this is often described as DisplayPort Alt Mode. Expected result: the port is listed as supporting video.
- Decide whether the monitor draws power from the laptop or needs its own supply. Host-powered screens use laptop battery. Some monitors include a battery, but many do not. Expected result: you know whether the laptop must stay plugged in during use.
- Match the monitor’s input to your cables. Several picks accept only one input type, so check the table below before buying a cable.
- Connect and confirm. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display to confirm the monitor is detected, then open Advanced display to check the refresh rate. On macOS, open System Settings > Displays. Expected result: the monitor appears as an extra display at its listed resolution. If it does not, the port is likely not carrying video or the cable does not match the monitor’s input.
Display quality
- 1080p is common and adequate for many small portable screens, especially for documents, email and video calls.
- Higher resolution sharpens text and suits creative work. OLED panels can offer stronger contrast and color, but they are not automatically the right choice for every job.
- Manufacturer brightness and color figures are not the same as measured results. TechRadar says its guide tests brightness claims and evaluates color coverage where relevant, so check that a review measured the figure you care about.
Gaming
Most productivity-focused portable monitors run at 60Hz. Gaming-oriented models are offered at 120Hz, 144Hz, 180Hz or higher. When comparing, look at refresh rate, adaptive-sync support and the connection needed to reach the advertised mode together. A high refresh rate alone does not guarantee smooth gaming, because the cable and input must also carry that rate.
Rank #2

- [Versatile Cover and Stand] Equipped with a scratch-resistant smart protective cover made of durable PU leather, it can also be used as a stand when working. Two grooves are used to adjust the angle and fix the external monitor. It can also provide all-round protection for the 1080p monitor when going out or traveling, suitable for putting in a backpack to avoid squeezing. Optional landscape and portrait modes, save more desktop space
- [Worry-free Purchase] Since the output power of each device is different, the screen may flicker or restart. You can power the laptop monitor to solve it. Provide a 30-day return policy and 18-month warranty (excluding external force damage). If you have any concerns, please let us know (displayed on the back of the monitor)
For consoles, TechRadar’s buying guide answers the common question directly: “No – you don’t need a dedicated portable monitor for gaming.” Its explanation is that standard HDMI or mini-HDMI portable displays can connect to a console, while competitive players may prefer higher refresh rates and resolution.
Stand, cover and protection
A screen you carry is only as useful as its stand. Tom’s Hardware calls stand design a potentially decisive factor and prefers a good built-in stand to some separate cover arrangements. PCWorld flagged an awkward stand on the InnoView, so stand quality is worth checking in reviews rather than assuming it from the price.

MSI Pro MP165 E6: mainstream travel and work
TechRadar names the MSI Pro MP165 E6 its overall portable-monitor pick in its 2026 guide. Its review describes a light design, VESA mounting and performance across Windows, Mac and gaming devices. It is a sensible starting point if you want one screen that moves between a hotel desk, a café table and an office. The compromise is that the coverage cited here does not give its refresh rate or resolution, and listings can vary by configuration, so match the exact model code to the one reviewed.

ViewSonic TD1656-2K: stylus-friendly value second screen
WIRED picks the ViewSonic TD1656-2K as its value choice. PCWorld calls its 2560×1600 panel sharp and notes the included passive stylus. That combination suits reading, spreadsheets and light sketching on a second screen. PCWorld’s caveat is that it is better suited to spreadsheets than photo editing, so skip it if color-critical editing is the job.

ASUS ZenScreen MB27ACF: large screen for office collaboration
At 27 inches with a 2.5K panel, the MB27ACF is aimed at collaboration or office use across one or a few workstations. PCWorld lists it as its 27-inch pick. TechRadar notes that its size makes regular travel less practical. Choose it when the monitor will live on a desk and move between a few fixed setups rather than travel in a bag.

ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED: premium image quality
TechRadar describes this 15.6-inch 4K OLED panel as strong on color, and PCWorld names it the best 4K portable monitor. It suits photo review, text-heavy work where sharpness matters, and video. Two compromises apply. Its 60Hz refresh rate makes it a poor fit for gaming-focused buyers. Its 400-nit brightness is moderate, so in our reading it will show its limits more in a sunlit room than in a dim hotel room.
Arzopa Z1FC: budget high-refresh gaming
PCWorld describes 144Hz motion clarity and a compact integrated kickstand, making the Z1FC the only high-refresh pick in this list at a budget price. PCWorld flags two compromises: it uses mini-HDMI rather than full-size HDMI, so bring a mini-HDMI cable, and it has no Adaptive Sync. Confirm the current model specifications and price on the listing, because budget models are often revised and repriced.
ASUS ZenScreen Duo: dual-screen productivity
The ZenScreen Duo puts two hinged 14-inch panels at 1920×1200 on a single USB-C connection. WIRED says the pair draws 13 watts combined and that most laptop USB-C ports can manage that load. It suits anyone who needs a reference document beside a working window or a split code editor. The power figure is a general claim, not a guarantee for your port, so check your laptop’s USB-C output before buying. Expect two panels to add bulk and two surfaces to protect when you travel.
HP Series 5 Pro 514pn: compact premium work and travel
PCWorld describes the HP Series 5 Pro 514pn as a 14-inch 2560×1600 display with a built-in kickstand and magnetic cover, weighing 1.4 pounds. Its input is USB-C only. That makes it a clean option for a USB-C laptop that supports video output and a dead end for one that does not. Confirm that the exact regional model you can buy accepts video over USB-C from your laptop before ordering.
InnoView portable monitor: entry-level budget
PCWorld placed the InnoView under $100 when it reviewed the model, and it offers USB-C plus full-size HDMI. It works as a backup or occasional second screen for documents and video. PCWorld warns about budget build quality, an awkward stand and muted color, so treat it as a cheap extra display rather than a daily travel companion. Prices change quickly, so check the current listing rather than relying on the figure above.
