You can share mobile internet without buying a dedicated 5G hotspot: use your phone’s hotspot feature with an eligible travel eSIM, or choose a cellular travel router if you need Ethernet or more advanced networking. For frequent trips or several devices, a dedicated hotspot may be more practical. In every case, the device and data plan are separate decisions: confirm that the exact device is supported, that the plan permits hotspot use, and that it covers your destination.
What can you use instead of a portable 5G hotspot?
The main alternatives are phone tethering, a SIM-flexible mobile hotspot, a cellular travel router, and—when connectivity is for a team rather than one traveler—an organization-oriented system. They differ in more than speed: device eligibility, data allowances, portability, and networking features can determine whether an option works at all.
| Option | Best suited to | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Phone hotspot with a travel eSIM | Occasional sharing or a short trip when you already have a compatible phone | Phone eligibility, plan hotspot allowance, destination coverage, and activation rules |
| Dedicated unlocked 5G hotspot | Repeated travel, several devices, or keeping shared internet separate from your phone | Carrier acceptance, supported bands, SIM options, local plan availability, battery, and high-speed data limit |
| SIM-flexible hotspot | Travelers who want to switch between local SIMs and eSIM profiles | Regional and carrier compatibility, profile switching, plan eligibility, and actual runtime |
| Advanced 5G travel router | Users who need routing features, Ethernet, or cellular and wired WAN options | WAN failover needs, VPN and firmware features, power, portability, and regional support |
| Organization-oriented portable system | Field teams or organizations that need managed or multi-carrier connectivity | Carrier contracts, management, ruggedness, deployment requirements, and support |
Is a phone hotspot enough for travel?
For occasional internet sharing, a phone can avoid buying and carrying another device. But the phone, carrier plan, and destination must all support the intended use. A plan that includes mobile data does not necessarily include tethering, or may set a separate hotspot limit; check that allowance rather than relying on an “unlimited” label.

AT&T says its travel eSIM plans include 5 GB of hotspot data and offers 1-, 7-, 15-, and 30-day durations. Its eligibility requirements include an unlocked, 5G-capable, dual-SIM phone with an open eSIM slot. This is phone eligibility—not evidence that the plan can be activated in a standalone hotspot. When is a dedicated 5G hotspot the better choice?
A separate hotspot is worth considering when you routinely connect multiple devices, travel often, or do not want tethering to drain or occupy your phone. The modem does not provide service by itself: you need a compatible carrier plan, and the carrier must accept the exact model for the intended use.

Unlocked does not mean universally compatible
Check the device’s supported cellular bands against the networks used at your destination, then confirm carrier approval and plan eligibility. NETGEAR says the Nighthawk M7 is unlocked and certified for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the US; that does not guarantee coverage at every location or acceptance under every plan. Its product page also advertises eSIM plans in 140+ countries, a manufacturer claim rather than a guarantee of service in any particular country. NETGEAR advises customers to contact their carrier for US local SIM or eSIM activation and data-plan details. NETGEAR Nighthawk M7 specifications and guidance.

NETGEAR lists up to 3.6 Gbps Wi-Fi speed for the M7. That is a manufacturer specification, not a promised cellular download speed or an independent test result. Real service depends on compatible equipment, the carrier network, coverage, congestion, and plan terms.

The D-Link F509 offers a different kind of flexibility: its product page lists a Nano SIM slot and storage for up to three eSIM profiles, with one profile active at a time. D-Link says its plan and SIM are purchased separately and compatibility varies. The company lists up to 3.27 Gbps 5G NR and up to 18 hours of runtime; these are manufacturer figures, and D-Link notes that actual runtime varies. D-Link F509 product specifications.
When should you choose a cellular travel router?
A cellular travel router is a better fit when you need more than a pocket hotspot’s basic Wi-Fi sharing. For example, Ethernet WAN can let a router use a wired connection, while VPN features may fit a more specific network setup. Confirm the features and setup you need on the individual model; “travel router” does not guarantee any particular port, failover behavior, or VPN capability.

ASUS describes its 5G-GO as a cellular travel router and lists Ethernet WAN and VPN features. It also specifies “Flexible WAN up to 2.5G via Ethernet.” Its stated maximum cellular rate of up to 5.15 Gbps and runtime of up to 19 hours are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. How much high-speed data do the plans include?
Compare the high-speed allowance and what happens after it is used. A plan may continue to provide data at a reduced speed, impose another restriction, or have different terms. The following are examples from US carrier pages accessed October 4, 2026; prices, eligibility, taxes, coverage, and offers can change.

| US plan example | Displayed allowance and price | After the high-speed allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Prepaid hotspot/router tiers | 5 GB at $40/month; 25 GB at $60/month; 100 GB at $80/month; 150 GB at $100/month. Multiline discounts were also displayed. | Not stated on the cited page. Verizon plan details |

These are examples, not permanent offers or recommendations. Check current plan terms, the high-speed threshold, post-allowance behavior, and whether the carrier permits your particular hotspot or router. A lower-speed continuation may be suitable for basic messaging but not for every work call, download, or connected device.
How to choose for travel or backup internet
- List the devices and features you need. For one or two devices on occasional trips, phone tethering may be enough. For several devices or frequent travel, consider a dedicated hotspot. Choose a travel router when wired WAN or specific routing features matter.
- Check the destination network. Confirm local coverage and that the device’s supported bands and carrier approvals fit the destination. A device sold as unlocked or global is not automatically compatible with every local network.
- Verify plan and device eligibility together. Ask whether the exact model can use the intended SIM or eSIM plan, and whether that plan permits hotspot or router use. Phone travel eSIM eligibility alone does not establish support for a standalone hotspot.
- Estimate data use at full speed. Compare the high-speed allowance, billing period or trip duration, and any reduced-speed or other post-allowance terms. Include video calls, cloud backups, and multiple users when estimating demand.
- Compare total cost and practical runtime. Add hardware and service costs, and consider whether a separate battery-powered device is useful for the length of your trip. Treat maker battery figures as claims, not guaranteed runtime under your workload.
- For backup internet, test the failure path. A cellular hotspot can provide an alternate connection when home broadband is unavailable, but it still depends on local mobile coverage, working equipment, and an active data plan. Check that the plan’s high-speed quota is adequate for the tasks you would rely on during an outage.
What about portable systems for teams?
For field teams and organizational deployments, an integrated system may be more appropriate than a consumer pocket hotspot. Airgain describes its Go-Kit Pro as an integrated 5G modem and Wi-Fi 6 router with multi-carrier eSIM support. Its intended buying context is different from selecting a low-cost personal travel device; evaluate management, deployment, carrier arrangements, ruggedness, and support.
