To get the most money for an iPhone, compare a direct marketplace sale with several buyback and trade-in quotes for the exact model, storage, carrier status, and condition. A marketplace may offer more upside but takes more work and involves buyer interaction; a buyback or trade-in is simpler, but its quote can change after inspection and may be paid as restricted credit. No route is a proven universal winner.
Judge each offer by the money you can actually use after fees, shipping, any required service plan, and the value of your time—not by an advertised “up to” amount. Provider availability, currencies, eligibility, and payout rules vary by country. The comparisons below draw on a Macworld article updated August 20, 2026; check live terms and quotes before choosing.
How to compare offers fairly
Get quotes on the same day and enter identical details for the phone. A model name alone is not enough: storage, condition, carrier lock, and whether the device is paid off can change eligibility or price. Compare the following before accepting:
- Net usable value: subtract seller fees, shipping or packaging costs, and any other required expense. For store credit, count only what you would otherwise spend at that store.
- Payout and restrictions: distinguish unrestricted cash from gift cards, store credit, or a discount tied to a purchase.
- Quote validity and repricing: check how long the quote lasts, what happens after inspection, and whether you can decline a revised offer.
- Eligibility: confirm whether the provider accepts the phone’s condition and carrier or financing status.
- Effort and risk: account for listing, photos, shipping, buyer messages, and the possibility of a dispute.
- Location: confirm the offer applies in your country and that you understand its currency and payment method.
Advertised ceilings and asking prices are not guaranteed proceeds. A useful comparison is a live, conditional quote or a realistic estimate of what a comparable listing may sell for, less the costs and effort of completing the sale.

Which route fits your priorities?
Direct sale on a marketplace: potentially more control, more work
On Swappa, a seller creates a listing, adds photos, sets a price, and ships the phone after it sells. Swappa says it checks listings and provides recently sold price information. That can help you set an asking price, but it does not guarantee a buyer or a particular final price. You handle the listing and buyer interaction, and the seller is responsible for packaging and shipping, according to Macworld’s comparison.
Swappa’s policy allows carrier-locked phones if they are fully paid off, but does not allow broken phones. Check the current listing rules and your financing status before preparing a listing. A direct sale can suit an owner willing to do the work in exchange for more control over the asking price; it is not a guaranteed way to earn more.
Rank #2

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Specialist buyback: fewer selling steps, conditional payment
Back Market’s US buyback page describes an online assessment, an offer from a refurbisher, free shipping, and payment after the phone is shipped. The process is more straightforward than managing a marketplace listing, but the amount depends on the provider’s assessment and the submitted phone matching its description. Check the current condition rules, quote period, payout method, and what it costs to have the phone returned if you reject a revised offer.
Macworld also discusses Gazelle and its quote and payout terms. Those terms can change, so use its comparison as a lead rather than assuming a specific quote period or payment option still applies. Verify the live offer and return policy before shipping.
Rank #3
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).

- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Swappa Trade-In: partner offers rather than a Swappa listing
Swappa Trade-In is different from selling directly through Swappa: it presents offers from trade-in partners. Its page says many partners accept broken or water-damaged phones, quotes commonly lock for 14 days, and payout timing varies by partner. “Commonly” is not a guarantee for a particular offer; review the named partner’s eligibility, lock period, payment method, and inspection terms.
Apple Trade In: convenient when Apple credit is useful
Apple Trade In may be a practical choice if you want credit toward an Apple purchase, but credit is not interchangeable with cash. Apple says a third-party vendor provides the trade-in and may revise the original quote if inspection differs from the description, Find My iPhone has not been removed, or the device is not received within 14 days of delivery of the trade-in box. The transaction is final unless you decline a revised quote. Read Apple’s trade-in terms before sending the phone, and compare the credit with the cash value of other offers.

Retailers, carriers, and country-specific services
Macworld’s comparison mentions Amazon and big-box store-credit options in the US, carrier promotions, and UK services including Music Magpie, CeX, Envirofone, We Buy Any Phone, Argos, Currys, and John Lewis. These are options to check in your location, not a guarantee that every provider currently accepts every iPhone. A carrier deal may require a new line or a qualifying plan. Compare the total cost of required service over the time you must keep it with the device credit; a large credit can be poor value if it commits you to a more expensive plan.

What the available 2026 price examples do—and do not—show
Macworld’s comparison, updated August 20, 2026, reported the following Apple maximum trade-in estimates. They are estimates, not guaranteed cash offers, and depend on the phone and inspection. Confirm Apple’s live offer for your device before relying on a figure.

| iPhone 15 | Up to $335 |
The same Macworld article gave around $605 as an example of iPhone 15 Pro Max models sold on Swappa. It is not a guaranteed sale price or a directly comparable net amount: the example does not establish matching condition, storage, fees, or proceeds after costs. These dated examples illustrate why checking same-day offers matters; they do not establish which route pays most.
Back Market’s US page includes a legacy sentence referring to “In 2024” alongside dynamic offers. Do not treat its displayed maximum as a reliable 2026 benchmark; request a current quote and read the terms attached to it.

- Check carrier and financing status. Confirm whether the phone is locked or financed. Swappa requires a listed carrier-locked device to be fully paid off.
- Back up data you want to keep. Apple says the seller is responsible for backing up or deleting data. Do this before erasing the phone.
- Record the phone’s actual condition. Disclose damage and other relevant details accurately. Keep a copy of the quote and the condition information you submitted.
- Turn off Find My and sign out of iCloud. These steps are important for transfer and specifically affect Apple’s inspection terms. Swappa Trade-In also instructs sellers to sign out of iCloud and disable Find My.
- Remove the SIM card, then factory-reset the phone. Swappa Trade-In instructs sellers to remove SIM cards and erase the device. Check whether your phone uses a physical SIM or eSIM and follow the provider’s current transfer instructions.
- Keep shipping proof and review the revised-offer process. Save tracking and shipment records. Before posting the phone, know whether you can reject a lower inspection offer and what happens to the device if you do.
Choose based on usable value, not the headline offer
If you are willing to list the phone and manage a buyer, compare the likely net from a marketplace sale with live buyback and trade-in quotes. If convenience matters more, a buyback or trade-in may be worth choosing even when its value is lower—provided the inspection, payout, and return terms work for you. Treat credit as valuable only to the extent you will use it, and recheck promotions and required plan costs on the day you decide.
