The best place to buy a laptop depends on what matters most: an exact configuration, education pricing, local pickup, a longer advertised return window or a deal. Compare the same laptop configuration across the manufacturer, Best Buy, Costco and Amazon, then choose based on the final delivered price, seller, warranty, support and return terms.

When buying directly from a laptop manufacturer makes sense
A manufacturer’s store can be useful when you want a particular combination of processor, memory, storage, display or warranty coverage. It is also worth checking for education pricing if you qualify. Apple says eligible customers can purchase with Education Pricing through the Apple Store Online, an Apple Store location, the Apple Store app or Retail Customer Care by phone.

Before ordering, compare the delivery estimate, return conditions and warranty tier with other sellers. A lower advertised price may not be the better choice if it comes with a less suitable warranty or return policy.
When Best Buy is a good choice
Best Buy can be convenient if you want local pickup, a wide selection of Windows laptops and Macs, or the chance to inspect an open-box laptop in person. Compare open-box items with the same new configuration, and check the item’s condition and terms rather than assuming every open-box listing is equivalent.

Pay attention to the seller. Best Buy’s return policy distinguishes purchases from Best Buy from purchases made through Marketplace sellers, and it includes nonreturnable categories and special handling requirements. Review the applicable terms for the exact item on Best Buy’s return and exchange policy before checkout.
When Costco may be worth checking
Costco’s computer category currently advertises a two-year warranty and a 90-day return policy for computers. It lists laptop brands including Dell, Apple, Lenovo and HP. Those terms can be appealing to members, but verify the warranty and return details attached to the specific laptop listing; also include the cost of membership in your comparison. How to shop for a laptop on Amazon safely
Amazon has a broad selection and rotating deals on Chromebooks, mid-range laptops and MacBooks. The listing alone does not establish that every seller offers the same warranty or return terms. Before paying, check who sells the laptop, whether it is new or another condition, who fulfills the order, which manufacturer warranty applies and what return window is shown for that listing.
Compare the exact model and configuration rather than relying on a similar product title. Differences in processor, RAM, storage or display can make two listings look alike while offering different value. Amazon’s laptop listings are at Amazon.
