For a bright room, start with a brighter picture mode and raise the TV’s screen-light output only as much as needed. For a dark room, try a movie-oriented mode and lower screen-light output until the picture is comfortable. The exact controls and values depend on the TV model, year, room, and content, so there is no single setting that suits every LG or Samsung TV.
Choose a picture mode for the room
Picture modes are useful starting points, not guarantees of accuracy. Your room’s light and reflections, the TV’s capabilities, your preferences, and the content all affect what looks right. Labels and available modes can vary by model and year.

These are manufacturer suggestions, not universal calibration results. LG’s picture-settings guidance says the visible result depends on room lighting, screen reflectance, TV capabilities, settings, and content. Samsung likewise notes that menus and features vary by model and year in its picture-settings guidance.
Adjust the control that changes screen light output
If the image is hard to see in a bright room, adjust the control that governs how much light the screen produces. Samsung calls this Backlight: raise it in a particularly bright room and lower it in a dark room. On LG TVs, the label may be OLED Light or OLED Pixel Brightness on OLED sets, or Backlight on other models. The label and menu location depend on the set.

Do not assume the Brightness control is the same thing. Samsung lists Backlight separately from Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, and Color. Avoid copying numeric values from a different TV: the same number is not a dependable target across models, panel types, or rooms.
Find the picture settings on your TV
Menu paths differ by model and software generation. Open the TV’s Settings and look for Picture, then choose a picture mode or find the relevant picture controls. On Samsung sets, screen-light output is available in the picture controls under Expert Settings on models that use that menu structure. For the exact path and feature names on your set, check its manual or the manufacturer’s model-specific support information.

If an LG screen looks unexpectedly dim
Before increasing unrelated image controls or assuming the TV has a fault, check the energy-saving setting and picture mode. LG identifies Energy Saving or an unsuitable picture mode as common reasons for a dim picture. The path to Energy Saving varies by webOS version and model; look in Settings for the Energy Saving option and review whether it is limiting the image.
LG also notes that picture settings may be input-specific. If the picture looks different on a connected device, check the settings while viewing that input and adjust them there if needed. See LG’s dim-screen troubleshooting guidance for model-dependent steps.

Decide whether automatic brightness is right for you
Some Samsung TVs offer Adaptive Picture, which can adjust brightness based on surrounding light and the viewed content. It is available only on supported models, and both the menu path and behavior vary across generations. Samsung lists examples across select QLED TV generations from 2020 through 2024; that does not mean every Samsung TV has the feature. Check your model’s manual or Samsung’s support information before looking for it.
Use a separate mode for gaming when latency matters
If your priority is lower input lag while playing games, use the TV’s Game Mode if your model offers it. This is a different goal from choosing a movie presentation for a dark room; the available gaming settings depend on the TV and connected device.

When calibration is worth considering
You can get a useful starting picture by choosing an appropriate mode and adjusting screen-light output without buying anything. Samsung notes that calibration discs can be purchased and used with a Blu-ray player, but that general guidance does not establish compatibility with every player, TV, or HDR format. A disc is optional, not a prerequisite for basic picture adjustments.
