There is no evidence-based single “best” phone thermal camera for home inspections, electrical work, and outdoor use. The documented choices here differ most clearly in how they connect to a phone and what their manufacturers say they support. FLIR ONE Edge Pro is the better-documented option for wireless positioning and guided home checks; Seek Thermal CompactPRO is an alternative whose product sheet depicts electrical, roof, and insulation/HVAC inspections, but that sheet is older. Check current device compatibility and availability before choosing either.
What to compare before buying
A phone thermal camera turns temperature differences into an image; it does not, by itself, identify the cause of a hot or cold area. For these products, compare the documented workflow rather than assuming that similar-looking images mean equal performance.
- Connection and positioning: Decide whether you need the camera physically attached to the phone or want to position it separately. A wireless camera can help when the target is out of reach or out of view.
- Phone and app compatibility: Check the exact handset or tablet, operating-system version, connector or case clearance where relevant, and current app requirements. Broad statements such as “works with iPhone” are not enough to confirm a particular setup.
- Image presentation: Look for documented image enhancement or a visible-light detail overlay, and consider whether those features help you interpret the thermal view.
- Inspection workflow: App guidance, image sharing, and analysis tools may matter as much as the camera for recording and revisiting findings.
FLIR ONE Edge Pro: the clearest fit for wireless home checks
Teledyne FLIR describes the FLIR ONE Edge Pro as a wireless smartphone thermal camera. It can be clipped to a phone or tablet, or positioned separately to inspect targets that are out of reach or out of view. The manufacturer says it combines VividIR image enhancement with MSX, which overlays visible details on the thermal image. See the FLIR ONE Edge Pro product page.
Home inspection workflow
FLIR says its app includes inspection guides for finding air leaks, insulation gaps, and moisture buildup around a house. The product information also describes support for third-party apps, including a home-energy analysis app. Those features make Edge Pro the best-documented of these options for a guided home-inspection workflow; they do not establish that it detects every defect or diagnoses the underlying cause. Details are on FLIR’s product page.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPATIBILITY: Infrared camera plugs directly into phone charging port and connects with iphones with USB-C (iphone 15 and newer)
- SUPER RESOLUTION: Vivid IR technology upscales the image to 240x180 from 80x60 for greater detail and clarity. Flir MSX technology merges thermal and visual images to enhance details in real time.
- THERMAL INSPECTION GUIDES: Within the Flir One app is a step-by-step inspection guide to help you address typical faults easily and perform accurate home inspections. Find air leaks, moisture buildup, and more
- ACCURACY: Measures temperature within ±3°C or ±5% when the unit is within 15 °C – 35 °C and the scene is within 5 °C – 120 °C
- JOBSITE TOUGH: Built to take the abuse that working on a jobsite dishes out every day, rated to take a drop from 1.5 meters and is built to last
Compatibility to confirm
FLIR lists iOS 17 or later and Android 13 or later for Edge Pro. Those minimum operating-system versions do not guarantee compatibility with every handset, tablet, case, or app version. Check the current FLIR ONE compatibility information for your exact device before purchasing.
Seek Thermal CompactPRO: an alternative to verify
Seek Thermal says its Compact series works with top iPhone and Android models and describes thermal imaging for energy loss and electrical hazards. Its CompactPRO product sheet depicts electrical, roof, and insulation/HVAC inspection. This makes it a plausible alternative to investigate for those tasks, but the detailed sheet is older and does not confirm present availability or support for a specific phone. Verify both with Seek or a current retailer before buying. See the Seek Compact series page and CompactPRO product sheet.

- iOS and Android Compatibility: The P1 thermal imager supports all USB-C smartphones and computers, including iOS, Android, and Windows. For iPhones with a Lightning port, a Type-C to Lightning adapter is required (sold separately). App name: Thermal Master.
- 320×240 X³ IR Resolution: Equipped with advanced X³ IR technology, P1 thermal camera upgrades its IR resolution from 160×120 to 320×240, delivering sharper and clearer images. With a 25Hz refresh rate and the ability to detect temperature differences as small as 0.04°C, it delivers smooth visuals and precise thermal detection, helping prevent potential safety risks.
- Wide Temperature Range: The P1 supports a temperature range from -4℉ to 1112℉ (-20℃ to 600℃) with an accuracy of ±3.6℉. Equipped with the high-sensitivity Thermal Master sensor, it offers a reliable thermal imaging solution for home insulation inspections, HVAC system diagnostics, electrical panel inspections, industrial equipment maintenance, and automotive troubleshooting.
- More Accurate and Efficient: P1 thermal imaging camera features 15× digital zoom, high and low temperature alarms, and an isotherm mode. These functions help you quickly detect hot or cold spots and examine key details with clarity. Adjustable emissivity, ambient temperature, and distance settings reduce environmental interference and improve temperature accuracy.
- Compact and Long-Lasting: Use the Thermal Master App for seamless device control. With low power consumption of just 0.32W, the P1 supports 5–8 hours of continuous operation. Compact and lightweight, it measures 2.32×1.06×0.68 inches (59×27×17.2mm) and weighs only 0.62oz (17g), making it easy to carry in a shirt pocket. The package includes the P1 thermal camera, a zipper case, a 50cm extension cable, and a quick start guide.
Which camera suits each job?
| Use | What the cited product information supports | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Home inspections | FLIR documents app guides for air leaks, insulation gaps, and moisture buildup, as well as a home-energy analysis app. Seek’s older CompactPRO sheet depicts roof and insulation/HVAC inspection. | A thermal image can show a temperature pattern, not prove the cause. Treat it as an inspection aid, not a complete building assessment. |
| Electrical work | Seek describes thermal imaging for electrical hazards, and its CompactPRO sheet depicts electrical inspection. FLIR’s cited materials support inspection use but do not establish a product ranking for electrical work. | Thermal imaging does not replace electrical test instruments, safe work practices, or a qualified inspection. Do not rely on a camera image alone to determine whether equipment is safe. |
| Outdoor use | The cited materials support portable thermal imaging across varied inspection settings. | They do not establish either camera as best for wilderness use, search-and-rescue, or demanding outdoor conditions. Check suitability for the specific environment rather than extrapolating from general inspection claims. |
Make the choice from your actual phone and workflow
- Write down your exact phone or tablet model and OS version. Compare them with the manufacturer’s current compatibility details, rather than relying on a broad platform claim.
- Decide how you need to aim the camera. Edge Pro’s wireless positioning is documented for out-of-view targets and use clipped to a device. If a direct-attached setup is your preference, confirm the alternative’s current connector and handset support before ordering.
- Choose the inspection tasks you need to document. Match them to the manufacturer-described guidance or inspection examples, and consider how the app handles saving, sharing, or analyzing images.
- Confirm current availability and terms. Neither the cited product information nor the older Seek sheet establishes current stock or price. Check the seller and manufacturer immediately before purchase.
Limits of the available comparison
The manufacturer materials cited here describe features and intended inspection contexts, not a controlled head-to-head test. They do not establish comparative image quality, measurement accuracy, current prices, or a category-wide winner. Choose based on verified compatibility and the documented workflow that matches your job, and use thermal imaging as one input rather than a substitute for appropriate inspection methods.
