The best Ambilight alternative depends on where your TV’s picture comes from. For a console or external streamer, an HDMI sync box can match compatible lights to the video routed through it. For built-in TV apps or broadcast channels, choose a TV-compatible app or a screen-sync system explicitly designed to capture those sources. A box connected only to HDMI cannot read Netflix playing inside the TV.

Start with the picture source

Before comparing brands or light effects, check how you watch. The synchronization method determines whether the lights can see the content.

What you watch Route to consider Key limitation
Apps built into the television A sync app listed as compatible with your exact TV model, or a system that explicitly supports native TV apps An HDMI sync box does not receive the video signal from a TV’s built-in apps.
Broadcast television A screen-sync system that specifically supports broadcast TV Do not assume an HDMI box can read the tuner’s picture.
Console, streamer, or other HDMI source An HDMI sync box, with the source routed through it Video that bypasses the box will not be available to synchronize.

Philips Hue’s FAQ puts the routing requirement plainly: “The HDMI device must be plugged into the Hue sync box with an HDMI cable.” Hue also says its HDMI box does not support smart TV apps because their signal does not pass through HDMI. If you watch a streaming service through a console or external streamer connected to the box, that HDMI device—not the TV’s app—is the source the box can follow.

Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2: an HDMI option with high-refresh passthrough claims

Govee’s AI Sync Box Kit 2 is a documented choice for viewers who route external HDMI devices through a box. Its official listing identifies model H6604 for 55–65-inch and 75–85-inch TVs, and claims HDMI 2.1, up to 4K/144Hz and 8K/60Hz, plus VRR and ALLM support. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Govee warns that maximum performance depends on the display and that some screens using DSC may not be supported. Check the listing and your display’s specifications before relying on a particular mode.

The box follows HDMI sources routed through it; it does not make built-in TV apps pass through HDMI. Govee says the kit works with Govee-branded RGBIC lights, so confirm which lights and components are included in the specific package you are considering. The US product listing showed $259.99 when checked in 2026; that is a dated US listing price, not a current or universal price guarantee. Check Govee’s official AI Sync Box Kit 2 listing for current details.

Philips Hue Sync: an app for certain TVs or a box for HDMI

Hue offers two different approaches: a Sync TV app for compatible Samsung and LG televisions, and HDMI sync boxes for external HDMI sources. The app route may suit someone using a TV’s native apps, but compatibility is model- and region-specific; verify the exact television before buying. The HDMI route requires the source device to be connected through the box and does not cover native TV apps.

Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync: announced, but verify retail availability

Signify announced Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync on September 10, 2026, describing it as a distinct proposition from Philips Hue. Signify says the system can synchronize with native smart TV apps, broadcast television, and HDMI-connected devices, and describes an HDMI 2.1 box. Because an announcement does not establish that a product is available to buy in your region, confirm retail status, exact compatibility, and package details before treating it as a ready-to-purchase solution. Camera-based kits: worth investigating when HDMI routing is inconvenient

A camera-based kit is another possible route when you want the lights to react to what appears on the screen without routing every source through an HDMI box. TechRadar’s September 29, 2026 comparison discusses Nanoleaf 4D and Govee Flow Pro in this category. That coverage can help identify products to investigate, but current official specifications for exact kit variants—and comparable evidence for performance, latency, or price—are not established here. Confirm the product’s current manufacturer documentation and compatibility before choosing one.

Compare the complete setup, not just the sync box

Two kits that both create a colored glow behind a television may differ in what they can read, what lighting they control, and what needs to be purchased separately. Use the following checks before choosing:

  • Signal coverage: List your actual sources—TV apps, broadcast tuner, console, and external streamer—and verify that the proposed method supports each one.
  • TV compatibility: For an app-based route, confirm the exact television model and region. For a kit, match its supported screen-size range to your TV.
  • HDMI formats: If gaming or high-refresh video matters, check the box’s supported formats against both the source and the television. Treat manufacturer specifications as claims, not proof of performance in your setup.
  • Lighting ecosystem: Confirm which lights work with the controller and whether the package includes the lights, controller, and other parts needed for your intended arrangement.
  • Total cost: Add the required compatible lighting and controller to the box price, and check local availability and current regional pricing.
  • Installation and routing: Account for available HDMI ports, cables, and the need to route external sources through the box. A source connected directly to the TV instead may not be synchronized by an HDMI box.

Choose by viewing habits

You mostly use built-in apps or broadcast TV

Prioritize a compatible-TV sync app or a product whose manufacturer explicitly says it supports those sources. Hue’s TV app is limited to compatible Samsung and LG models. Signify says the newly announced Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync covers native apps and broadcast TV, but verify regional retail availability before planning a purchase.

You use a console or external streaming device

An HDMI box is a natural fit if you are willing to route that device through it. Compare supported video modes with your equipment, and confirm the box controls the lights you intend to use. Govee’s listing documents a TV kit and gaming-format claims, with display-specific caveats; Hue offers an HDMI route within its lighting ecosystem.

You want one system to cover mixed sources

Write down every source you use, then look for explicit support for each one. A setup that handles a console may still miss TV apps, while an app that works on a compatible television may not cover every external device. Do not infer broad source compatibility from the word “sync” alone.

What to verify before checkout

  1. Identify the signal path: Note whether each service comes from a TV app, the broadcast tuner, or an HDMI device.
  2. Check exact compatibility: Confirm the TV model, region, kit size, source device, and desired video formats against current manufacturer documentation.
  3. Confirm the full package: Make sure the box, lights, and other required components are included or available in compatible versions.
  4. Price the full system locally: Use current regional listings rather than relying on a price seen in another market or at an earlier date.
  5. Plan connections: Ensure the HDMI devices you want synchronized will connect through the box and that the required ports and cables are available.
