The best pH and TDS meter depends on where you will use it and what you need to measure. For spot checks or field work, a portable pH/EC/TDS meter keeps the setup compact; for repeated workplace or lab measurements, a benchtop instrument can add calibration options and data handling. Neither type identifies every contaminant or proves that water is safe to drink.
Choose by setting and measurement needs
Start with the measurement and workflow, not a claimed “best” ranking. The available product information supports comparing instrument features, but it does not establish an independently tested winner.
- Household checks or field use: Consider a portable instrument if you need measurements away from a bench. Check the specified parameters, calibration procedure, probe design, and any water-resistance rating in the product manual; a rating should not be assumed for the whole category.
- Routine workplace or lab measurements: A benchtop meter may suit a fixed workflow that benefits from multiple calibration options and records or data transfer. Confirm that the instrument measures the parameters your method requires.
- Contaminant questions: If you need to know whether water contains a particular contaminant, use a suitable laboratory test for that substance. A pH or TDS reading does not answer that question.
Portable and benchtop examples
These are examples of different instrument types, not comparative test winners. Specifications are manufacturer claims; check the current listing and manual for the model and region where you plan to buy.
| Instrument | Workflow and measurements | Calibration and records |
|---|---|---|
| Hanna HI9813-51 portable meter | Portable pH/EC/TDS instrument; the Hanna Instruments Canada listing is a regional product page, so availability may vary. | The listing describes single-point calibration for pH and EC/TDS. See the official regional listing for current details. |
| Hanna HI2600 benchtop meter | Measures pH, EC/TDS, and dissolved oxygen. | The listing describes calibration features and data logging/transfer. In Standard Mode, it supports up to five pH calibration points; its stated pH accuracy is ±0.01 pH at 25 °C, or ±0.002 pH in higher-resolution mode. These are model specifications, not independent test results. See the official listing. |
| Hanna HI6522-01 advanced benchtop kit | Listed as an advanced pH/ORP/ISE and EC/TDS meter kit. | The official listing describes conductivity/TDS measurement and calibration specifications. Check its details against your measurement method: HI6522-01 product listing. |
What a TDS reading tells you
A meter’s TDS display is commonly calculated from electrical conductivity (EC), rather than produced by individually identifying dissolved substances. The result therefore depends on the instrument’s conversion factor and settings. On the HI2600, Hanna specifies a selectable TDS factor from 0.40 to 0.80, with 0.50 as the default. That model-specific range is not a universal setting for all meters.
#1 Best Overall
- Application: Great for all home and laboratory TDS & pH testing applications including aquariums, swimming pools
- PH Meter: Full measurement range of pH 0 - 14, reliable and quick readings
- 3-in-1 TDS Meter: Measurement Range 0-9990ppm, 0-9990µs/cm; Accuracy ± 2%, 0.1- 80.0°C, 32.0-176.0°F; Note: This meter can't test sea water
- Features: Comes with protective case; Lightweight, handheld design for portability and convenience
- Included: PH meter, 3-in-1 TDS meter, 3 calibration buffers
Use the same instrument settings and measurement method when comparing readings. A TDS number is not an inventory of contaminants and cannot establish that water is safe to drink.
Calibration: fit the procedure to the work
Calibration helps a meter measure against known standards, while verification and ongoing quality control help check that results remain suitable for the intended work. Do not assume one schedule or procedure applies to every instrument or use case. For drinking-water pH work, follow the applicable method and instrument manual; U.S. EPA Method 150.3 describes pH measurement, calibration verification, and quality control.

- 4-IN-1 WATER TESTING METER – Measures Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), and temperature in °C/°F. Compact digital design suitable for testing drinking water, aquariums, hydroponics, and RO systems.
- FAST DIGITAL READINGS – Provides TDS, EC, and temperature measurements within seconds. Features one-button operation and a backlit LCD display for clear visibility during testing.
- DURABLE DESIGN WITH TITANIUM SENSOR – Built with a titanium alloy probe, auto-off function, and compact handheld design. Suitable for home, aquarium, hydroponic, and water filtration testing.
- INCLUDES DIGITAL TDS GUIDE – Comes with a downloadable reference guide to help interpret TDS readings for common water applications such as drinking water and aquariums.
- COMPLETE TESTING KIT – Includes TDS meter, batteries, and a quick-start guide so you can begin testing right away.
- Check the instrument’s supported calibration points and compatible pH buffers.
- For EC/TDS, verify which conductivity standards and calibration options the meter supports.
- Follow the manual for probe cleaning, storage, and calibration frequency, and use the procedure required by your measurement method.
- When comparing readings, keep the conversion factor and other relevant settings consistent.
The HI9813-51 listing describes single-point calibration for pH and EC/TDS, while the HI2600 listing describes up to five pH calibration points in Standard Mode and multiple conductivity standards. Those differences may matter if your method calls for more calibration options; they do not by themselves establish which instrument is more accurate for your application.
What to check before choosing
- Parameters: Confirm whether you need pH, EC, TDS, temperature, dissolved oxygen, or another measurement, and verify that the specific model supports it.
- Calibration fit: Match calibration points and standards to the method and work frequency.
- Probe and upkeep: Check whether the probe is integrated or replaceable, plus the manufacturer’s cleaning and storage requirements and the consumables needed.
- Readout and records: Compare specified resolution and accuracy for the exact model and conditions. If measurements need documentation, check for logging and data-transfer capabilities.
- Portability and durability: For field work, confirm the instrument’s size, power needs, and stated water-resistance rating rather than inferring them from its category.
When a meter is not enough
pH describes how acidic or alkaline a sample is, and EC/TDS measurements characterize conductivity or a value derived from it. These readings do not identify every dissolved substance. If the decision concerns contaminants beyond the parameters the meter measures, arrange testing by a laboratory using an appropriate method for the water and contaminant of concern.
