The best person-removal tool depends on the photo and the control you need. Adobe Photoshop is the strongest documented choice when you want to trace a person, adjust the sampled area, choose a fill method and keep the edit on a separate layer. Google Photos’ Magic Eraser is the quicker option for removing a photobomber on a phone. Neither vendor’s documentation establishes a universal winner or a verified accuracy score, so inspect every result at full size.

Adobe Photoshop: the detailed-control option
Photoshop has several documented ways to remove a person. The right choice depends on whether you want a quick automated pass or control over exactly which pixels are used to rebuild the background.

Adobe’s June 11, 2026 tutorial describes tracing around the subject, opening Content-Aware Fill, and reviewing the green sampling overlay. You can subtract areas from that overlay so Photoshop does not sample an unwanted person, shadow or foreground object.

- Open the image in Photoshop and use a selection tool to trace around the person. Adobe’s tutorial states: “With our practice file, or a photo of your own, use a selection tool to trace around the subject you want to remove.”
- Open Content-Aware Fill for the selection.
- Review the green overlay showing the areas Photoshop will sample.
- Subtract regions that should not contribute to the replacement pixels, then preview the fill.
- Set the output to a new layer if you want the fill separated from the original image, and apply it.
- Hide the new layer to compare the edit with the untouched original before making further changes.

Use the Remove tool for distractions
Photoshop’s desktop Remove tool documentation covers people and other distractions. The documented workflow includes Auto and generative-AI processing choices. Brush over the person or distraction, let Photoshop generate the replacement, and inspect the result before continuing. The exact options and output can differ by Photoshop version, setting and image.

Use Delete and Fill Selection for a fast selected-object pass
Delete and Fill Selection automatically removes a selected object and fills its area with content intended to match the surroundings. It is useful when the person is cleanly separated from a relatively simple background, but the documentation does not promise a seamless result for every selection.

Google Photos and Pixel: the quickest photobomber workflow
Google positions Magic Eraser for removing photobombers and other distractions. On the Pixel product page, the described interaction is to circle an unwanted object and have the tool fill the space. That page is a Pixel product description; it does not establish that the same controls or capability exist on every Android phone, iPhone or Google Photos version.

- Open the picture in Google Photos and enter the editing tools.
- Choose Magic Eraser when it is offered.
- Accept a suggested distraction or circle the person yourself, following the controls shown on your device.
- Apply the fill, zoom in on the edited area and use the app’s undo or revert option if the result damages nearby details.
Google’s May 15, 2024 announcement said Magic Eraser and several other AI editing features would be available without a Google One subscription to people using Google Photos, subject to selected-photo and device availability. That is a dated availability statement, not a guarantee of access in 2026. Check the current Google Photos editing page and your app before relying on the feature.

Adobe Firefly Generative Remove
Adobe’s Firefly Generative Remove feature page describes painting over people with a Generative Remove brush and downloading the resulting image. This can suit a browser-first workflow, but the cited page does not independently establish removal quality, privacy handling or current plan limits. Confirm those details in your account before using it for sensitive or high-volume work.
How to judge a removal before you keep it
Automated filling can look convincing at thumbnail size and fail when enlarged. Use this inspection checklist after any tool:

- Edges: Check hair, fingers, clothing boundaries, railings and other fine contours for smears or duplicated shapes.
- Texture: Look for repeated bricks, leaves, fabric weave or noise that suddenly breaks around the filled area.
- Shadows and reflections: Removing the person may leave an implausible shadow, reflection or lighting transition.
- Perspective: Lines in floors, walls, fences and horizons should continue in the correct direction.
- Overlapping subjects: Make sure the fill has not erased part of a nearby person or object.
If any of these checks fail, undo the edit, reduce the selection, change the sampled area in Photoshop, or make several smaller passes instead of one large removal. These are prudent editing steps, not measured defect rates for any particular product.
A practical decision guide
Choose Photoshop when control matters more than speed
Use Photoshop if the person overlaps important edges, the background has a repeating pattern, or you need to separate the result from the original. Selection-based Content-Aware Fill gives you explicit control over the sample region, while the Remove tool offers additional documented processing choices.
Choose Google Photos when the edit is simple and mobile
Magic Eraser is appropriate for a quick photobomber removal when your device exposes the feature and the background is forgiving. It minimizes setup, but offers less documented control than Photoshop’s trace-and-sample workflow.
Choose Firefly for a web-based generative pass
Firefly fits users who want to paint over a person in a browser-oriented Adobe workflow. Verify account access, plan terms and the generated result before treating it as a finished image.
What the official documentation does—and does not—prove
The cited Adobe and Google pages establish available tools and their described interactions. They do not provide a named benchmark for person-removal accuracy, a controlled comparison across scenes, or evidence that one option always produces the most realistic result.
