For many iPhone users, Apple’s built-in Passwords app is the best place to start. It handles passwords, passkeys, verification codes, autofill and syncing across supported Apple devices. If you also use Windows, Android or other platforms—or want a particular third-party feature—compare dedicated managers such as 1Password, Bitwarden and Proton Pass. The available product documentation supports comparing these four options, but not a tested top-10 ranking.

Which password manager should you use on an iPhone?

Choose based on the devices you use and the features you need, rather than treating every app as interchangeable. Apple Passwords is a practical baseline for someone whose digital life is mostly on Apple devices. A third-party manager may be a better fit if you need broader platform coverage or a feature offered by a particular provider.

Option What the available product documentation describes Best fit
Apple Passwords with iCloud Keychain Passwords, passkeys, verification codes, Password AutoFill and shared groups; iCloud Keychain syncs credentials among approved Apple devices. Apple Support and Apple’s iCloud Keychain security overview People who primarily use Apple devices and want a built-in manager.
1Password Its iOS support documentation describes autofill for logins, generated passwords and passkeys. 1Password Support People considering a dedicated third-party manager.
Bitwarden Bitwarden describes encrypted vault storage, autofill, password generation, family credential sharing and passkeys. Bitwarden’s iPhone product page People interested in its iPhone app and vendor-described free offering.
Proton Pass Proton lists iOS availability and says Proton Free includes unlimited logins and devices, password generation, passkeys and ten hide-my-email aliases. It lists integrated 2FA, secure vault or item sharing and dark-web monitoring among paid-plan features. Proton Pass People interested in the listed aliases and privacy features, or a free plan across devices.

These are documented features, not results from comparative app testing. The available information does not establish that one option is faster, more reliable or more secure than the others in independent testing.

Is Apple Passwords enough?

It may be. Apple says its Passwords app is available beginning with iOS 18 and can manage passwords, passkeys and verification codes. It also supports Password AutoFill and shared groups for family or trusted contacts. Check your device’s operating-system compatibility before relying on a particular feature. iCloud Keychain syncs saved passwords and passkeys among approved Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro. Apple says the credentials are synced without being exposed to Apple. That makes ecosystem fit central: the built-in option is most straightforward when the devices you need are Apple devices. Apple’s iCloud Keychain security overview

Consider a third-party manager if you need to use the same vault beyond Apple’s ecosystem or want a provider-specific feature. Before switching, check support for your other devices and browsers, the plan’s sharing limits, account recovery, export options and current cost. The product pages cited here do not establish every detail of those comparisons.

How to enable a third-party password manager for iPhone autofill

Installing an app alone does not make it the iPhone’s selected autofill provider. After installing your chosen manager, enable Password AutoFill and select that provider. Apple describes Password AutoFill as supporting login and account creation in iOS apps and webpages, but individual apps and sites may behave differently. Apple Developer: Password AutoFill

For Proton Pass, follow Proton’s iPhone and iPad setup guide for its documented steps. 1Password also documents its iOS autofill flow in its autofill support article.

How to choose between free and paid plans

Start with the feature you actually need. Proton’s product page describes a free plan with unlimited logins and devices, while listing integrated 2FA and secure sharing among paid features. Bitwarden’s iPhone page describes a free offering, but the cited page does not provide a complete current plan comparison. The available 1Password documentation likewise does not establish current price or plan terms.

Before paying, compare the current plan details for your region and the same billing period. Check how many people can share a vault, which sharing features are included, which devices are supported, and what happens if you stop subscribing. Do not compare a temporary introductory offer with another service’s standard renewal price.

What to check before moving your passwords

  • Device coverage: Confirm that the manager supports the phones, computers and browsers you use, especially if you use platforms beyond Apple.
  • Autofill and passkeys: Check that the provider supports the sign-in methods you rely on, and enable it as the iPhone’s autofill provider.
  • Sharing: If you share credentials with family or colleagues, verify who can access them and which plan includes the sharing feature.
  • Portability and recovery: Review how to export your vault and recover account access before making a manager your only copy.
  • Security evidence: Read the provider’s security documentation and distinguish its own claims from independent audits or verification. The product pages cited above do not independently establish comparative security.
  • Total cost: Compare the same number of users and billing period, including renewal pricing and any features you would otherwise need separately.
