The right pre-lit outdoor garland depends on where you’ll hang it. A covered porch or doorway can suit a garland whose maker permits covered outdoor use; a spot exposed to rain or snow calls for a product explicitly described for that exposure. The examples below are manufacturer-described options, not independently tested winners.
How to choose a lighted garland for your outdoor space
Start with the exact mounting location, then compare the practical details that affect fit and setup. An “outdoor” label alone does not establish that every component, including a plug or controller, can be exposed to weather.
- Exposure: Check whether the maker permits covered outdoor placement or describes the garland for weather-exposed use. Follow any exclusions for rain, snow, or moisture.
- Size and appearance: Match the garland’s length and decorative style to the doorway, railing, or mantel-like porch feature you want to dress. The cited product descriptions do not provide a reliable, comparable measure of fullness.
- Lights: Compare light type, color, and count. These specifications describe the product, not independently measured brightness.
- Power and reach: Check whether it plugs in or uses batteries, and whether the lead cord reaches the outlet without creating a trip hazard or requiring an unsuitable extension setup.
- Mounting: Confirm whether hooks or other hanging pieces are included and suitable for your surface.

Can you put a pre-lit garland outside?
Only if the manufacturer’s guidance covers the specific location. National Tree Company’s listed garland is for covered outdoor locations and should be kept away from direct rain, snow, or moisture. By contrast, the Celestial Lights catalog describes its garland as weatherproof and UV-treated for indoor/outdoor use. Do not infer from either description that all electrical parts can be left exposed; follow the product’s instructions for the plug, any controller, and connections.
Set up outdoor garland lights more safely
ULSE’s 2024 Holiday Safety Guide recommends weatherproof GFCI outlets for outdoor lights, checking cords and equipment, and avoiding overloaded outlets and power strips. Its guidance is useful for setup but does not certify a particular garland for your location.

ULSE’s 2024 holiday study reported that 55% of respondents used one or more light timers, 76% checked outside lighted decorations for outdoor-use certification, and 81% usually checked that outdoor lights were plugged into weatherproof GFCI outlets. These are survey-reported behaviors, not universal practices or proof that a product is safe.
