The best OSRS services to use in 2026 are the ones Jagex offers or supports: official membership, Old School Bonds, and the Jagex Launcher, which can run the official clients and RuneLite. Paid services that play, level or sell your account are not recommended, because Jagex’s rules prohibit them.
The legitimate options at a glance
Old School RuneScape (OSRS) has a small set of official paid and free options, plus one widely used third-party client. The table compares them on the four points that matter: cost, what they unlock, whether Jagex runs them, and the account rules that apply.
| Option | Cost model | What it gives you | Jagex offering? | Policy notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-play OSRS | Free | Access to the free-to-play parts of the game, which Jagex presents as an option on its join page | Yes | Standard account rules apply |
| OSRS membership | Paid recurring subscription; price not stated in this article | Member-only skills, regions, quests, bosses and raids, player housing, extra bank capacity, and member worlds | Yes | Standard account rules apply |
| Old School Bonds | In-game tradeable item | Redeemable for membership or a name-change cooldown bypass | Yes | Cannot be transferred to RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys |
| Jagex Launcher | Not stated | Launches the official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape clients and RuneLite | Yes | Download only from official or trusted sources |
| RuneLite | Free and open source | Third-party client with GPU rendering, loot tracking, status widgets and Discord integration | Not made by Jagex; supported by the Launcher | Feature availability and versions change |
OSRS membership
Membership is the clearest paid service in the OSRS ecosystem. Jagex’s membership benefits page lists member-only skills, regions, quests, bosses and raids, player housing, additional bank capacity and member worlds. The OSRS join page also presents free-to-play access as an option, so the choice is between the two rather than between membership and nothing.

The benefits fall into three groups. Content access covers the member-only skills, regions, quests, bosses and raids. Convenience covers player housing and the extra bank capacity. Community space covers member worlds. Whether those groups matter depends on how you play, so it helps to decide which one is your reason for paying before you look at the price.
#1 Best Overall
- RuneScape Membership offers players a huge variety of benefits such as hundreds of additional quests and adventures, a larger game world to explore, exclusive skills and master and access to a whole host of minigames.
- The Members Loyalty Programme also allows users to unlock unique rewards, outfits and emotes to show off to their friends.
- Players can also access the most powerful weaponry and armour in the game, create clan citadels with their friends and even build their very own house.
- Now buy extra spins for the Squeal of Fortune: a game of chance with fantastic in-game prizes on offer: some exclusive; some powerful; and some...well...nutritious. Everyone's a winner, and it's quick and easy to play every day!
Membership or free play: how to decide
- If you want to train or complete content that is member-only, membership is the direct route to it.
- If you mainly want the free-to-play content, the free option is enough, and you avoid a recurring cost.
- If your interest is bank space or housing, check whether those features matter enough to justify a subscription.
- Check the price on the join page before subscribing. This guide does not quote a figure, and the price you see there is the one that applies to you.
Old School Bonds
Old School Bonds are an in-game item and they belong to the OSRS economy. Jagex’s Old School Membership Bonds page says they are tradeable within Old School RuneScape and can be redeemed for membership or for a name-change cooldown bypass.
What Bonds can do
A Bond lets you trade value between players in OSRS and then turn that value into membership time or skip a name-change cooldown. It is a way to pay for membership with in-game items rather than only with a card, which is why it is often mentioned alongside membership.
Rank #2
What Bonds cannot do
Bonds are not the same as RuneScape Bonds. Jagex states that Old School Bonds cannot be transferred to RuneScape for RuneCoins or Keys. Do not treat a Bond as a credit that moves between the two games, and do not read redemption as a cash subscription purchase.
Official client software
Jagex’s Jagex Accounts FAQ says the Launcher supports the official RuneScape and Old School RuneScape clients as well as RuneLite. That makes the Launcher the supported starting point for most players.
The Jagex Launcher
Use the Launcher to start the official OSRS client. Download it only from official or trusted sources. The Launcher is also where you sign in with your Jagex Account, so keep that sign-in private and avoid giving account details to anyone who asks for them.
RuneLite
RuneLite describes itself as a free, open-source Old School RuneScape client. On its official site, the listed features include GPU rendering, loot tracking, status widgets and Discord integration. Feature availability and software versions change, so check the site for what is current before you rely on a specific feature.
Rank #4
RuneLite is a third-party client, not a Jagex product. The Launcher’s support for it is what makes it a supported option; it does not make every RuneLite plugin or add-on acceptable. Use the features that are described on the site, and stay away from anything that automates play (see below).
Services to avoid
A lot of paid OSRS offers look like services, but Jagex’s rules treat them as violations. The official Rules of Old School RuneScape state: “In addition, paying someone to play your account for you is covered by this rule.” The same section defines real-world trading to include buying or selling, for money or anything of value, things related to Jagex accounts. The rules also say: “Players must not share, transfer or lend their account to anyone else.” This guide does not recommend paid leveling, boosting, gold selling or account-playing vendors, and it does not compare their prices or speed.

Macros, bots and “ban-proof” claims
Jagex’s macro and client features rules disallow software that generates game input or performs game actions for the player. Any tool that does this is outside the rules, whatever it claims. A claim that a tool is “ban proof” is not evidence that it is allowed, and readers should not treat it as one.
Downloads and unofficial ads
Unofficial service ads and download offers are a common route for account theft. Jagex’s guidance on keeping your account safe from malware says to download only from official or trusted sources and to avoid sharing account details. Apply that rule to any link you receive from an advert, a chat message or a forum post.
Current status
When this guide was prepared, the official OSRS homepage listed an update dated October 7, 2026 and a future-update preview dated October 6, 2026. The homepage shows that news is active, but it does not describe what those updates change. Read the linked news before you rely on any update-specific detail, and treat the prices and feature lists in this guide as points to check on the official pages.
Jagex’s official OSRS page describes the game as “a community-led game,” which is a useful reminder that the official services are built around playing the game as intended.
