QNAP’s QTS is a credible choice if you want a QNAP appliance and its broad NAS feature set, but it is not automatically the best operating system for every home NAS. The right pick depends on the filesystem and data-protection features you need, hardware compatibility, apps, maintenance preference, and whether you are buying an appliance or building your own system.

One important distinction: QTS and QNAP’s QuTS hero are separate operating systems, not interchangeable names for the same platform. If you are choosing between them—or comparing QNAP with Synology DSM or TrueNAS—start with the storage system and hardware you intend to use.

How to choose the best home NAS operating system

Use these questions to narrow the decision before comparing specific NAS models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which filesystem and storage features do you need? QTS uses ext4; QuTS hero is ZFS-based. Supported Synology systems offer Btrfs or ext4, while TrueNAS uses ZFS.
  • Which hardware will run it? QNAP and Synology OS options depend on the NAS model and configuration. TrueNAS lets you choose hardware, but you must make sure that hardware meets its requirements.
  • Which apps and services matter? QNAP describes QTS as covering file management and sharing, backups, snapshots, multimedia, virtualization, and surveillance. Check that the exact model supports the capabilities and applications you need.
  • How much configuration and maintenance do you want? An appliance keeps the OS and hardware within a vendor-supported combination. TrueNAS offers more hardware choice, but leaves component selection and maintenance to you.
  • Could you need to change platforms later? Filesystem and OS changes can involve migration and data loss risk. Plan your backup and transition before choosing.

Vendor documentation establishes features and requirements, not which interface is easiest to use or which platform is more reliable. There is no supported basis here for a universal winner on those points.

How QTS differs from QuTS hero

QTS: the ext4-based QNAP option

QNAP describes QTS as a Linux-based operating system that uses ext4 and provides NAS functions including file sharing, backups, snapshots, multimedia, virtualization, and surveillance. That makes it a plausible choice for someone who wants a QNAP appliance and has confirmed that the desired features are available on the specific model. QNAP notes that features can vary by model. QNAP’s QTS overview lists the platform’s stated capabilities.

QuTS hero: QNAP’s ZFS-based option

QuTS hero is QNAP’s ZFS-based operating system. Consider it when its ZFS storage feature set fits your needs and the exact NAS model, firmware, and configuration support it. QNAP’s stated memory requirements are at least 8 GB RAM for QuTS hero; inline deduplication needs at least 16 GB, with 32 GB or more recommended. These requirements come from QNAP’s compatibility FAQ, last modified December 30, 2025. QuTS hero is not supported on dual-controller NAS systems. Check QNAP’s QuTS hero compatibility FAQ for model-specific support.

  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Do not treat QTS and QuTS hero as a setting you can casually toggle. QNAP says the NAS must be reinitialized to switch between them because they use different filesystems, and instructs users to back up data and settings first. Treat a switch as a migration: preserve a separate backup, verify the target system and configuration, and plan for reinitialization before making any change. QNAP’s QuTS hero overview explains the requirement.

How the alternatives compare

Option What the vendor documentation establishes Best fit Constraints to check
QNAP QTS Linux-based; uses ext4; includes NAS functions such as file sharing, backups, snapshots, multimedia, virtualization, and surveillance. A QNAP appliance owner who wants QTS and has verified model support for needed features. Feature availability varies by model. QTS is distinct from QuTS hero.
QNAP QuTS hero ZFS-based; QNAP describes data-integrity features and publishes memory and model compatibility requirements. A user whose requirements specifically suit its ZFS storage feature set. At least 8 GB RAM; inline deduplication requires at least 16 GB, with 32 GB or more recommended. Check model, firmware, and configuration support. Switching from QTS requires reinitialization.
Synology DSM Supported models offer Btrfs or ext4 and RAID options including SHR-1 and SHR-2. Btrfs features listed by Synology include snapshots, replication, compression, and file self-healing. A buyer comparing branded NAS appliances who wants DSM’s supported storage features. Filesystem and capabilities vary by model. Synology states limitations for checksums and for the model and RAID combinations that support self-healing and recovery.
TrueNAS 25.10 The hardware guide gives x86_64 hardware guidance and describes ZFS storage configuration. A technically comfortable owner who wants to select or repurpose hardware. You choose and maintain the hardware. Baseline guidance includes 8 GB RAM, an SSD boot device, and two same-sized storage devices for a pool; more demanding applications or virtual machines may need more.

For Synology, consult the DSM 7.4 storage management specifications for filesystem and RAID support, and the DSM 7.3 specifications for feature details and limitations. Those specifications are versioned, and supported features depend on the NAS model and configuration.

When TrueNAS makes more sense than an appliance OS

TrueNAS is a reasonable option if you want to choose your own components or repurpose suitable hardware rather than buy a NAS appliance. Its 25.10 hardware guide gives this baseline for a single storage pool:

  • A 2-core Intel 64-bit or AMD x86_64 processor.
  • 8 GB of memory.
  • A 16 GB SSD boot device.
  • Two identically sized storage devices.

These are TrueNAS 25.10 guidance, not universal requirements for QTS, DSM, or every NAS operating system. The guide discourages spinner or USB boot media. It also warns that DM-SMR and HA-SMR drives perform poorly and are not recommended for ZFS; HM-SMR is unsupported. Check drive recording technology and vendor support before selecting disks. See the TrueNAS 25.10 hardware guide for its full guidance.

What to verify before buying or changing a NAS

  1. Write down the workload. List the file-sharing, backup, multimedia, virtualization, or surveillance functions you need, and check them against the exact model’s supported features and apps.
  2. Confirm the filesystem and storage features. Decide whether ext4, Btrfs, or ZFS features matter for your use. Check model-specific documentation rather than assuming every device in a product family supports the same options.
  3. Check hardware and memory. For QuTS hero, verify model, firmware, and configuration compatibility as well as RAM. For TrueNAS, compare the planned components with the 25.10 hardware guidance and your workload.
  4. Plan for capacity changes and migration. Confirm how the model or system supports the storage layout and expansion you expect. If moving from QTS to QuTS hero, account for the required reinitialization and backup.
  5. Keep an independent backup. RAID, snapshots, and filesystem features do not replace a separate backup. Before any reinitialization or platform move, back up data and settings and confirm that you can restore them.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose QTS as a candidate if you want a QNAP appliance, its ext4-based feature set meets your needs, and the exact model supports your required functions.
  • Consider QuTS hero if you specifically want its ZFS-based feature set and your model, firmware, and memory configuration qualify. Make the choice before loading data when possible, because changing from QTS requires reinitialization.
  • Consider DSM if you are comparing appliance platforms and its model-supported Btrfs or ext4 and RAID features fit your needs.
  • Consider TrueNAS if hardware choice or reuse matters more than an appliance-style package and you are comfortable selecting and maintaining the system yourself.

The information available here does not support a current exact model or price recommendation: that depends on your country, budget, bay count, capacity target, required apps, and workload.
