There is no single best open-world RPG, because “can’t stop playing” means different things to different people. Some players want to wander into a cave and find a boss nobody warned them about. Others want a fantasy world they can reshape with weapons, spells and a character built to their taste, or a story set in a city they want to live in. The shortlist below groups five games by those kinds of absorption, not by a universal ranking.

Each pick is judged on six comparison axes: open-world discovery, role-playing and build depth, combat style and difficulty, narrative focus, platform access, and what the current edition actually includes. The picks are editorial choices. Other editorial lists reach different conclusions, and GamesRadar, for example, says it revisits its own ranking and generally updates it monthly.

Three kinds of “can’t stop playing”

Before comparing games, decide which of these three experiences you are chasing. Each one points to a different game.

  • Discovery and combat mastery. You want a world that rewards curiosity and a fight system that asks you to learn it. Elden Ring fits this best.
  • A flexible fantasy sandbox. You want to explore, pick a role, and keep adding options to your character over a long run. Skyrim Anniversary Edition fits this best.
  • A story-rich city or world to inhabit. You want a central narrative, a strong setting, and a character you are invested in. Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt fit this best.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sits slightly outside this list. It is an action-adventure game rather than a role-playing game, but it is a strong pick if exploration and creative traversal are what keep you playing.

The shortlist, game by game

Elden Ring: for discovery and combat mastery

Bandai Namco describes Elden Ring as an open-world action RPG from FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment. Its appeal is in the discovery itself. GameSpot notes that the map gives limited markers, so caves, dungeons and hidden bosses are found by exploring rather than being pointed out to you. Shadow of the Erdtree, the expansion, adds weapons, equipment, skills, magic, enemies, bosses and plotlines.

Trade-off: The demanding combat and self-directed exploration will delight some players and frustrate others. If you prefer a guided path or lighter fights, Elden Ring is likely to test your patience.

In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable

Edition and platform: Bandai Namco Europe’s announcement dated August 28, 2026 states: “ELDEN RING™ Tarnished Edition, the open world action RPG from FromSoftware Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., is now available on Nintendo Switch™2.” The same announcement says the original game sold more than 30 million units. That figure is the publisher’s own reported number, not an independent count. For the Nintendo Switch 2 release, the Tarnished Edition includes the original game and Shadow of the Erdtree. Per that announcement, the new Tarnished Pack content is available separately for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Confirm regional availability and bundle contents on the live store page before you buy.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition: for a fantasy sandbox

Bethesda positions Skyrim Anniversary Edition around freedom to explore and build your character. The edition bundles the core game with the Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn add-ons, plus existing and new Creation Club content. Bethesda advertises hundreds of weapons, spells and abilities, which is what keeps long sessions varied.

Trade-off: This is the edition most likely to confuse existing owners. The Anniversary Edition is the full package, while the upgrade is designed for people who already own Skyrim Special Edition. Mod compatibility and platform specifics can differ from the official description, so check them before assuming a setup will work.

Cyberpunk 2077: for a futuristic city

CD Projekt Red describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world role-playing game set in a future city. PlayStation’s description puts you in the role of V in Night City. Phantom Liberty adds the Dogtown expansion, and it is the setting to ask about if you want more of the city beyond the base game.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: for a story-forward fantasy RPG

PlayStation describes The Witcher 3 as a story-heavy quest in which Geralt searches for a child of prophecy. If narrative is the main hook, this is the most direct pick on the list.

Trade-off: Base game and Complete Edition differ. The Complete Edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, so compare what your platform storefront includes before buying.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: for creative exploration

GameSpot classes Tears of the Kingdom as an action-adventure game rather than an RPG, and its appeal lies in exploration and building. Ultrahand lets you construct tools and vehicles, and the game spans Hyrule, the sky and underground areas. GameSpot’s 2026 list places the game on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Trade-off: This is a strong choice for creative exploration, but it is not a role-playing recommendation. If you want character progression and build depth above all else, one of the other four is the better fit.

Before you buy: check platform and edition

Editions change, and so do platform bundles. Use this checklist before you commit to a purchase.

  1. Confirm the platform you play on. Skyrim’s official page lists Xbox, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 options.
  2. Decide between the base game and any bundled edition. For The Witcher 3, that means Complete Edition contents; for Skyrim, that means the full Anniversary Edition versus the upgrade.
  3. If you already own Skyrim Special Edition, confirm you are buying the upgrade and not a duplicate of the full edition.
  4. For Elden Ring, check whether your platform uses the Tarnished Edition or a separate Tarnished Pack.
  5. For Cyberpunk 2077, check whether Phantom Liberty is included before assuming the Dogtown content is part of the purchase.
  6. Check the live store listing on the day you buy. The platform details in this article reflect announcements and product pages current as of October 2026, and listings can change.
