If you want another open world after finishing a remaster, start with Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for sword combat and stealth, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for machine-filled exploration, Cyberpunk 2077 for a futuristic city and flexible character builds, or Death Stranding Director’s Cut for a slower delivery-and-traversal loop. These games offer very different next steps, so choose by the kind of play you want rather than by the word “open-world” alone.
PlayStation’s May 22, 2026 catalog feature lists 13 open-world games for PlayStation Plus members, but its lineup can vary by region and change over time. Confirm the specific game in your local PlayStation Store before you start. PlayStation’s May 2026 list notes that Game Catalog access is for Extra and Premium/Deluxe members and that availability differs by region. The US PlayStation Plus page also describes Game Catalog access with Extra and Premium.

Pick the kind of open world you want next
“Open-world” can mean a focused action story, a dense city, a landscape to cross, or a collection of activities that pull you off the main path. The following recommendations are based on PlayStation’s official descriptions, not hands-on testing.

Best choices for action and exploration
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for swordplay and stealth
Choose this if you want the transition from a polished third-person action game to feel familiar, but want a new setting and combat identity. PlayStation frames it as a samurai story of revenge and honor, with stealth and deception as alternatives to confronting enemies directly. That gives you a clear choice between approaching encounters head-on and using a quieter method.
#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for another remastered adventure
If the remaster itself was part of the appeal, this is the most direct match in the shortlist. Its open world centers on Aloy’s exploration and encounters with robotic creatures, with tools for climbing, stealth, and ranged combat. It suits players who want environmental discovery and deliberate fights rather than a city-first experience.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for fast movement through a city
For a more kinetic choice, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 expands the playable New York setting and follows Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Web Wings add another way to move through the city. Pick it when traversal itself—moving quickly across an urban map—is a major part of what you want from the next game.
Best choices for a city to roam
Cyberpunk 2077 for builds and a futuristic setting
Cyberpunk 2077 is the strongest fit if you want to trade historical landscapes for a dense futuristic city. PlayStation’s description highlights Night City and character attributes that can support different play styles, including hacking or weapon specialization. It offers a useful contrast to a remaster built around one primary combat style: your character’s development can shape how you approach situations.

Grand Theft Auto V for crime stories and heists
Choose Grand Theft Auto V for a contemporary crime story built around three protagonists and heists in a large city. Its appeal is less about wilderness exploration and more about moving through an urban setting while following intersecting character stories.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for turn-based combat and side activities
This is a different sort of open-world option: exploration and diversions across Yokohama and Honolulu, alongside turn-based role-playing combat and comedy. It is a better match if you want city discovery and side activities than if you are looking for continuous action combat or wilderness traversal.
Best choices for slower exploration or a distinct setting
Death Stranding Director’s Cut for traversal and deliveries
Pick this when you want a deliberate change of rhythm. As Sam Bridges, you carry deliveries across a devastated United States, managing cargo while navigating difficult environments. The central appeal described by PlayStation is the journey and the premise of reconnecting society, rather than a conventional city-crime or sword-fighting loop.

Red Dead Redemption 2 for a detailed Western world
Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in a slower, detailed Western setting. It is a strong fit if you want to spend time in a richly described world and follow a character-led story rather than prioritize fast movement or futuristic builds.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for Viking exploration and settlement growth
Choose this for Viking-era exploration that combines raids, stealth, and expansion of a settlement. Its protagonist, Eivor, is customizable, and the mix of activities gives you more than a straightforward sequence of story fights.
Fallout 4 for post-apocalyptic role-playing
Fallout 4 suits players who want their choices to affect character development, settlements, and factions. PlayStation’s description also calls out companions, making it a good option if you enjoy building relationships and shaping a role-playing experience alongside exploration.

Hogwarts Legacy for magical activities and exploration
Pick Hogwarts Legacy if you want a fantasy setting with more than combat to occupy you. Its official description includes learning spells, brewing potions, growing plants, crafting, and exploring a magical-school world.
Far Cry 6 for a faster resistance story
Far Cry 6 offers a first-person resistance story in a fictionalized revolutionary setting. Protagonist Dani Rojas uses varied weapons and vehicles, including Resolver weapons. Consider it if you want a more action-forward, ranged-combat alternative to swordplay or slower traversal.
Star Wars Outlaws for a space-western flavor
Star Wars Outlaws brings together cantinas, space combat, speeders, and alien gangs for a space-western feel. PlayStation’s May 2026 catalog article noted its addition on that article’s publication date; that dated mention does not establish that it remains available in every region now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide between the shortlist
Use four questions to narrow it down: what setting you want, how quickly you want to move, which combat approach sounds appealing, and what you want to do between story missions. The recommendations below are editorial matches to PlayStation’s descriptions, not a hands-on ranking.
- Want the closest shift from a third-person action remaster? Start with Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for sword combat and stealth, or Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for exploration and ranged fights against machines.
- Want a major change of pace? Choose Death Stranding Director’s Cut for cargo management and difficult routes.
- Want a city and room to shape your character? Try Cyberpunk 2077.
- Want activities beyond combat? Consider settlements and factions in Fallout 4, magical crafting and lessons in Hogwarts Legacy, or city diversions in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Check your PlayStation Plus catalog before choosing
PlayStation’s May 22, 2026 feature is a dated shortlist, not a guarantee that all 13 games remain in every regional catalog on October 8, 2026. PlayStation says Game Catalog lineups can differ by region. Look up the title in your local PlayStation Store, and check that your membership tier includes Game Catalog access. PlayStation’s US membership page identifies Extra and Premium as tiers with catalog access; the May article refers to Extra and Premium/Deluxe, reflecting regional naming.
