For walks outdoors, start by choosing between two designs: bone-conduction headphones, which send sound through the cheekbones, and open-fit headphones, which place a speaker near the ear. Both can leave the ear canal open, but they are not the same technology—and neither guarantees that you will hear every hazard. Prioritize a stable, comfortable fit, usable outdoor volume, simple controls, and a battery and water-resistance rating that suit your routine.
Which headphone design suits your walk?
The right format depends on how you want audio delivered and how it feels during a longer walk. Treat “open-ear” as a broad description, not another name for bone conduction.
Bone-conduction headphones
These headphones sit against the head and conduct sound through the cheekbones, leaving the ear canal unoccluded. They may suit listeners who want a headband-style sports headset rather than an earbud near the ear. Fit and comfort are personal: check for pressure points, stability at a normal walking pace, and compatibility with glasses.
Open-fit or open-ear headphones
These use a small speaker positioned near the ear instead of sealing the canal. They are a distinct alternative to bone conduction and may appeal if you prefer an ear-worn format. Open-ear earbuds are worth comparing separately; TechRadar’s guide published August 17, 2026, covers tested models and distinguishes this category from bone conduction: best open-ear headphones.

How to choose for your route and routine
Compare the features that affect a real walk rather than relying on a headline specification alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Fit and comfort: Check stability at your normal walking pace, pressure points, glasses compatibility, and comfort for the full time you expect to wear them. A headset that shifts or becomes uncomfortable can undermine a long walk.
- Sound and volume: Consider speech clarity for podcasts and navigation, music balance, and whether the usable volume is sufficient outdoors. Review impressions vary; try a fit and listening level that work for you.
- Ambient sound: An open design leaves the ear canal unoccluded and may make surrounding sounds more accessible. How much you hear still depends on volume, fit, traffic, weather, and attention.
- Controls and calls: Check whether buttons are easy to locate without looking at your phone, and verify voice prompts and call performance for the particular model.
- Battery and charging: Compare manufacturer-stated listening time with the length and frequency of your walks, and check the charging method. Treat runtime figures as manufacturer claims unless independently measured; verify whether a short charge provides useful listening time.
- Weather resistance: Check the exact IP rating and the maker’s intended use. Sweat or rain resistance does not establish that a headphone is suitable for swimming.
- Portability and playback: Consider whether you prefer a headband or ear hooks, how the headset stores, and whether you need offline playback for your route.
Open-ear headphones do not guarantee awareness
Leaving the ear canal open can make ambient sound more accessible, but it does not mean you will hear every approaching vehicle, cyclist, or other hazard. Listening volume, fit, the environment, and where your attention is focused all matter. Stay alert at crossings and in busy areas; do not treat headphone design as a substitute for paying attention. No particular design should be considered a guarantee of safer walking.

Check current details before buying
Product names and listings can change. Before choosing a model, confirm its regional variant, current specifications, stock, price, warranty and return terms, exact water-resistance rating, and charging details on the manufacturer’s current product page or the relevant local retailer listing. In particular, verify that a model has not been superseded and do not assume a feature from one version applies to another.
