The best one-person backpacking tent is the lightest shelter that still gives you enough room, weather protection and practical storage for your trips. For long days on trail, low weight may matter most; for frequent rain, a larger vestibule or a roomier interior may be worth carrying more. Compare the complete shelter system—not just its headline minimum weight—and check how it pitches before choosing.
How to choose a one-person backpacking tent
Start with your trips and priorities
For long-mileage trips, a lighter tent can reduce the load you carry. If you value room to change, space for wet footwear and a pack, or a less constrained sleeping area, a heavier design may be the better fit. There is no universally best balance: decide which trade-offs matter for your routes and conditions.
Compare like-for-like weights
Manufacturers and retailers may distinguish a tent’s minimum trail weight from its packed weight. Minimum trail weight generally describes a pared-down setup, while packed weight can include more of the items you carry, such as stakes, stuff sacks or repair supplies. Check each listing’s definition and whether poles, stakes, footprint and repair items are included; otherwise, the listed figures may not represent comparable kits.
Understand the pitch
A freestanding tent can stand without stakes, making it easier to lift and reposition. It may still need staking to secure the rainfly and vestibule. Non-freestanding designs rely more on stakes and suitable ground for their shape, but can save weight. The NEMO Hornet OSMO Ultralight 1P is described as semi-freestanding in REI’s buying guide, so check its pitching requirements and practice the setup at home before relying on it in darkness or rain.

Check livability, storage and weather management
Interior dimensions and entry
Look beyond the label “one person.” Compare interior length and width, peak height, and door arrangement against your body size, sleeping pad and preferred way of entering or changing. A narrow or low tent can save weight but feel restrictive; door placement affects how easily you get in and out, especially when the weather is poor.

A vestibule keeps a backpack and footwear outside the sleeping compartment while giving them some cover. Check its dimensions and access, not just whether a tent has one. For solo use, usable vestibule space can make a compact interior much more workable.

Ventilation and condensation
A waterproof rainfly does not prevent condensation from forming inside the shelter. Mesh panels and adjustable fly vents can improve airflow and help limit moisture buildup, but conditions and site choice also matter. Favor a pitch with airflow when practical, keep vents open as conditions allow, and avoid assuming that waterproof fabric alone will keep the interior dry.
Season rating and conditions
The examples in REI’s category are primarily 3-season shelters where a season rating is provided. That label does not establish suitability for severe winter weather or mountaineering. Match the tent to the conditions stated for its specific model rather than treating a general season rating as a guarantee of performance in every environment.

Consider wet-weather setup before you buy
Pitch method can matter when rain arrives during setup. T3’s review of the two-person MSR Hubba Hubba LT2 reports that it cannot be pitched fly-first. That is a model-specific observation about the LT2; do not assume the same limitation applies to the one-person Hubba Hubba LT 1 without checking its specifications. The review also discusses ventilation and field use in driving rain and high winds, but those LT2 observations are not a substitute for evidence about the LT1.
