There is no evidence here for one universally “best” no-log VPN: the available audits cover different systems, use different approaches and offer different levels of public access. NordVPN, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN each have recent third-party assessment evidence, but an audit is a scoped, time-bound check—not a guarantee of anonymity or proof that a provider will never log data.
What “no logs” means—and what it does not
“No logs” describes a provider’s policy about retaining specified VPN activity or connection data. It does not necessarily mean the company holds no information about you. Account details, billing records, support exchanges and data used to maintain or troubleshoot a service may still exist. Proton VPN, for example, distinguishes activity and session information from account information and maintenance or troubleshooting data in its no-logs explanation.
A VPN also does not make a person anonymous by itself. The policy tells you what a provider says it retains; an independent assessment can offer evidence about particular systems and claims at a particular time. Neither one rules out every possible data-collection pathway or establishes what will happen in the future.

How the three providers’ audit evidence compares
The assessments below are not directly interchangeable. Read each entry for the auditor, scope, timing, limitations and report access rather than treating audit counts or labels as a privacy score.

What each provider says it does—and does not—retain
Proton VPN
Proton VPN says it does not log websites visited, traffic or communications content, IP addresses, session lengths or location-based information. It also says account information exists and that maintenance and troubleshooting data is secured with full-disk encryption. Those policy statements describe different categories of data; encryption does not mean the data is never retained. Proton VPN’s explanation
On that page, Proton also describes a 2019 legal case in which the company says it could not provide logs because they did not exist. That is Proton’s account of its own case, not a general ruling that VPN providers are exempt from legal orders.

NordVPN and ExpressVPN
The cited NordVPN announcement reports Deloitte’s conclusion in relation to NordVPN’s no-logs statement, while ExpressVPN’s announcement describes KPMG’s examination of its privacy-policy claims and TrustedServer. These announcements do not provide a directly comparable, item-by-item inventory of retained account, billing, support and troubleshooting data. Check each provider’s current privacy policy for the data categories that matter to you; an audit summary is not a substitute for that policy.

An audit of logging claims does not establish which service is fastest or best for a particular device. It is still useful to check whether a provider documents the controls and app support you need.

- NordVPN: The cited engagement included several server types—standard VPN, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN—but that scope alone does not establish how well any one configuration performs on your device. NordVPN’s audit announcement
- ExpressVPN: Its audit overview lists coverage across applications, TrustedServer, Lightway and Aircove routers. ExpressVPN describes Aircove as router hardware that runs the VPN at network level; this can be relevant when a device cannot run a VPN app, but check current model availability and compatibility before buying. How to choose a no-log VPN
- Define the data you want the provider not to retain. Look for explicit policy language about browsing activity, traffic content, IP addresses, connection times and session length. Treat account, billing, support and troubleshooting data as separate categories.
- Read the audit scope, not just the headline. Identify the auditor, systems examined, assessment type, dates, sample limitations and whether the conclusion is quoted by the provider or documented in a report you can inspect.
- Decide whether report access is sufficient for you. Proton’s Securitum report is public; NordVPN says account holders can access its full Deloitte report; ExpressVPN says the KPMG report is available after acknowledging KPMG’s terms. The public announcement may not contain the full findings.
- Match the documented controls to your devices. Confirm app availability and supported protocols for your operating systems, and check whether features such as a kill switch are available in the apps you plan to use. If you need VPN coverage for devices without an app, assess router compatibility separately.
- Compare the rest of the purchase on current terms. These audit sources do not provide a consistent head-to-head basis for speed, streaming reliability, jurisdiction, ownership, total subscription cost, renewals or refunds. Verify those factors for your region and plan before subscribing.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
These three providers have evidence of independent audit or assurance work, but the differences in scope, timing and report access prevent a fair overall ranking from these materials alone. Use the published policy to understand the provider’s stated data practices and the audit to judge what was checked, when, and how much of the result you can review. Neither is a promise of future behavior or complete anonymity.
