There is no single best NFT marketplace for every buyer or creator. Choose first by the NFT you want and the blockchain it uses, then compare the marketplace’s live fees, creator-earnings rules, wallet steps and service availability. A March 2026 Coin Bureau comparison points to OpenSea for broad exploration, Blur for active Ethereum trading, Tensor for Solana NFTs, SuperRare for curated art and NBA Top Shot for licensed basketball collectibles. These are use-case recommendations, not an objective ranking; platform features and availability can change.

How to compare the real cost
A marketplace’s headline fee is only one part of a transaction. Depending on the platform, collection and action, the total may also include creator earnings, blockchain gas and charges from a third-party payment or swap provider. Check who pays each charge and when it is triggered: buying, listing, accepting an offer, minting and swapping can have different costs.

OpenSea’s documented fees
OpenSea’s help documentation, dated May 12, 2026, lists a 1% fee for NFT sales, 10% for minting an NFT in a primary drop, and 0% for swaps. Third-party provider fees may still apply to swaps. The page also says private listings typically carry a 0% OpenSea fee at the time of publication and that prices can change; fees are set when a listing or offer is created. Check OpenSea’s current disclosure before transacting.

Gas and creator earnings are separate
OpenSea says blockchain gas is paid to network validators, not to OpenSea. Its help page says buyers pay gas when purchasing through OpenSea, while sellers may pay gas when first listing or accepting an offer. The applicable amount depends on the network and transaction, so a marketplace fee alone cannot tell you the full cost.
Creator earnings depend on the collection’s settings. OpenSea says earnings can be enforced or optional: when optional, the seller can choose whether to include them in a listing or accepted offer; when enforced, the collection’s specified percentage is paid at sale. Do not assume a creator’s preferred rate is guaranteed across every marketplace or collection.

Wallets, signatures and authenticity checks
OpenSea’s official explainer says a user needs a self-custodial crypto wallet and may need the chain’s native currency to pay gas. Marketplace actions are instructions that wallet software asks the user to sign with a private key. The wallet is therefore not just a login: a signature can authorize a transaction or other action. Read the wallet prompt, confirm what you are approving, and check that the NFT’s contract address matches the collection’s official information before signing.

OpenSea Learn cautions that verified-account checkmarks and notable-collection badges are not guarantees: “These are signals to help you assess authenticity and interest; they aren’t endorsements or guarantees.” Review the creator details and contract address as well as any badge. A hardware crypto wallet is an optional self-custody tool, not a universal marketplace requirement; check that any device and its software support the chain and wallet workflow you plan to use.

Using funds across chains
OpenSea’s cross-chain help page, dated February 11, 2026, says eligible funds on another compatible chain can be used for supported purchases and mints without manually bridging. The page lists native tokens on compatible chains, WETH, USDC, WSOL and certain other tokens as eligible payment methods. Availability depends on the chain, token and transaction. The same page says cross-chain purchasing does not work for Blur listings, so a buyer may need to swap or bridge funds manually. Check the live checkout flow before moving assets; a token being supported on one chain does not mean it is usable for every listing.
A practical checklist before you buy or list
- Match the NFT to the marketplace. Identify the collection and its blockchain first; choose a general marketplace for broad discovery or a specialist venue when the asset category or chain calls for one.
- Verify the collection. Compare the marketplace listing with the creator’s official information and confirm the contract address. Treat verification badges as clues, not proof.
- Review the total checkout cost. Look for the marketplace fee, creator earnings, gas and any third-party payment or swap charge. Confirm which party pays each item.
- Check your wallet and funds. Make sure your wallet supports the network and that you have any required token for gas or payment. Read each wallet prompt before signing.
- Confirm the platform is operating on that chain. Marketplace support can narrow or change. Check current official availability rather than assuming an older guide or search result is still accurate.
What “best” means for NFT marketplaces
Use-case fit is more useful than a universal winner. OpenSea is a reasonable broad starting point in the March 2026 comparison; Blur is aimed at active Ethereum trading, Tensor at Solana-native activity, SuperRare at curated art, and NBA Top Shot at licensed NBA collectibles. Those descriptions do not establish that any platform is cheapest, safest or best for every collection. Fees, creator terms, supported networks and operating status can change, so base the final choice on the exact collection and the marketplace’s current checkout and official disclosures.
