There is no single best network monitoring tool for every organization. The right shortlist depends on what you monitor, whether you want SaaS or self-hosted deployment, how each product licenses its features, and whether you need network data correlated with applications and cloud infrastructure. Among the products compared here, SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted is the only one with a current starting price established by the cited official pages: $8 per node per month. That is an entry price, not a like-for-like quote for every product or deployment.

What network monitoring software should cover

Network monitoring can bring together device discovery and health, performance measures, traffic analysis, alerts, topology, and path troubleshooting. Depending on the product and configuration, useful signals include bandwidth and interface utilization, packet loss, latency, throughput, availability, errors and discards, traffic flows, and network configuration changes. In a mixed environment, application and infrastructure context can help teams distinguish a network fault from a problem elsewhere in the service.

Compare coverage against your actual estate: sites, vendors, cloud accounts, managed services, wireless networks, and SD-WAN. Check support for the protocols and telemetry you use, such as SNMP, flow formats, APIs, and streaming telemetry. A long feature list is not proof that your devices or workflows are supported; confirm the specific models, versions, and integrations you depend on.

Network monitoring tools compared

This is a use-case comparison based on the vendors’ published product descriptions, not hands-on reviews or independent performance testing. SolarWinds’ comparison guide is vendor-authored, and product capabilities below are attributed to vendor materials.

Tool Published scope and strengths Deployment and licensing basis Price, trial or demo information established here
SolarWinds Observability Its official network page describes discovery using ICMP, SNMP, WMI, CDP, VMware, and Hyper-V; monitoring of bandwidth, packet loss, throughput, latency, connectivity, and availability; NetFlow reports and alerts; configuration comparison and backup automation; packet analysis; anomaly-based alerts; and hop-by-hop path analysis. SolarWinds describes both self-hosted and SaaS offerings. The published starting price applies specifically to Observability Self-Hosted and is per node. Self-Hosted starts at $8 per node per month, with volume discounts available. The vendor describes a fully functional 30-day trial and an interactive demo. The starting price does not establish the cost of every configuration or the SaaS edition.
Datadog Network Monitoring Datadog describes monitoring across multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments, with correlation across applications, infrastructure, and networks. Its device-monitoring description includes SNMP metrics and traps, APIs, NetFlow, syslogs, topology maps, and traffic-flow analysis; listed flow formats include NetFlow v5/v9, IPFIX, sFlow, and jFlow. SaaS-oriented. Confirm which products and usage dimensions a proposed deployment requires. The official page offers a demo request and a 14-day free trial of the full product suite, and links to pricing. A complete deployment price is not established by the product-page information cited here.
Paessler PRTG Network Monitor The vendor-authored 2026 comparison describes prebuilt sensors and customizable dashboards. The comparison characterizes PRTG licensing as sensor-based. Verify what counts as a sensor for the monitoring you plan to configure. The official pricing page did not provide enough information in the cited material to establish a reliable current amount. Confirm region, sensor count, deployment option, subscription period, and applicable limits with Paessler.
ManageEngine OpManager The vendor-authored comparison describes discovery, mapping, alerting, and reporting. The comparison characterizes OpManager as an on-premises package with device-based licensing. The official store information cited here was insufficient to substantiate an exact current price. Confirm edition, device count, modules, region, and licensing term with ManageEngine.

Other options named in SolarWinds’ vendor-authored comparison include LogicMonitor, described there as a SaaS platform spanning network, infrastructure, and cloud monitoring, and Dynatrace, described as emphasizing application context and analytics. Treat these as leads for a shortlist rather than independent review conclusions.

Which tool may fit your environment?

Consider SolarWinds when network operations need detailed troubleshooting

The published SolarWinds feature set covers discovery, device health, flow reporting, configuration work, packet analysis, and path analysis. That breadth may suit teams looking to combine several network troubleshooting activities in one environment. Validate which capabilities are included in the edition and modules you would buy, and whether the self-hosted or SaaS model fits your operational requirements.

Consider Datadog when network signals need application and cloud context

Datadog’s stated scope spans multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments and connects network monitoring with application and infrastructure data. Its listed flow formats and device telemetry are relevant where those data sources matter. Because the published product page does not establish a complete deployment price, request a quote based on the data, features, and retention your team expects to use.

Consider PRTG or OpManager when their licensing and operating model match

PRTG’s sensor-based model and OpManager’s device-based model measure different things. A sensor count is not interchangeable with a device count or a node count: a single device may require multiple measurements, and the products may package capabilities differently. Compare the monitored scope and required features behind each quote, not just the headline unit price. OpManager is described as on-premises in the vendor comparison; check current deployment choices and terms directly with the vendor.

How to compare pricing fairly

Only SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted has a sufficiently clear starting amount in the official-page information cited here: $8 per node per month, with volume discounts available. It is not a universal SolarWinds price. Datadog’s product page points buyers to pricing but does not establish a complete deployment cost here. The cited Paessler pricing page and ManageEngine store content do not support reliable exact amounts. An attempted Zabbix pricing URL returned a 404, which does not establish whether Zabbix has no pricing information or what it would cost.

Before comparing quotes, give each vendor the same scope and ask what is included. Record the licensing unit and the assumptions behind it:

What published reviews and ratings can tell you

The available material does not establish independent reviewer scores or original cross-vendor test results for these products. The SolarWinds comparison is written by the vendor, and product pages are first-party descriptions, so their feature claims should be read as vendor claims rather than neutral comparative findings. No independent performance statistic cited here establishes that one product is faster, more accurate, or superior to another.

SolarWinds says 77% of respondents to its 2026 State of Monitoring and Observability Report reported limited visibility across environments; the company says 750 IT professionals worldwide responded. This is a vendor-reported survey finding, not evidence that any particular tool solves the problem or represents every IT team.

How to use a demo or trial to make a decision

A demo can show the interface, but a proof of concept should test the conditions your team actually faces. SolarWinds describes a fully functional 30-day trial; Datadog describes a 14-day trial of its full product suite. Confirm current eligibility, scope, and terms with each vendor. For any product, use a consistent evaluation window and representative network data.

  1. Set a representative scope. Include a branch and a data-center topology, the device models and protocols you rely on, and relevant cloud or wireless environments.
  2. Check discovery and coverage. See whether the tool identifies the intended devices and topology, and confirm that the measurements and flow formats you need are available.
  3. Exercise a known incident. Trigger or replay a failure your team understands. Check whether alerts identify the affected components and provide useful traffic or path context.
  4. Test operational fit. Connect notification or ticketing workflows, inspect data retention and export behavior, and note the effort required for onboarding, alert tuning, and routine use.
  5. Measure the result. Compare repair time, alert volume, and operator effort across tools. The vendor comparison recommends evaluating representative sites and real incidents; these are buyer checks, not results of testing performed for this article.
  6. Model growth and cost. Estimate future device, node, host, or sensor counts and expected data volume, then validate the licensing and upgrade path with the vendor.

Choosing a shortlist

Start with the environment and operational question you need the tool to answer: device and path troubleshooting, correlation across network and application signals, or a particular deployment and licensing model. Compare protocol coverage and required telemetry, then confirm the commercial scope directly with vendors. Use a demo or trial to test discovery, incident context, alert quality, retention, integrations, and operator effort on representative sites before selecting a platform.
