For an in-person group that wants a physical game, HITSTER Original is the clearest fit: scan music cards with the companion app, listen, and place each song in chronological order. For a digital group quiz, SongPop Party offers local and online play for up to eight on Nintendo Switch. The choice comes down to whether your group prefers a shared card-game timeline or a console-based music quiz.

These games are not interchangeable: HITSTER’s basic challenge is placing songs in release order, while Nintendo describes SongPop Party as music-based trivia. Check regional availability before choosing a digital game.
HITSTER Original: best for an in-person card-game night
HITSTER combines physical cards with phone-based song playback. The companion app listing says the card game is required, and the app uses an internet connection. The app listing describes more than 300 songs from the last 100 years; that is the publisher’s product description, not an independently verified count. See the HITSTER app listing on Google Play.
How a round works
- One player scans a card using the app and listens to the song.
- The player places the card in their timeline, positioning it before, after, or between songs already there.
- Flip the card to check whether its chronological position is correct.
- Continue until someone correctly positions ten cards, as described in the official rules.
In the basic mode, players need to get the song’s relative release chronology right; they do not have to name its exact year. The official rules also describe harder modes: PRO adds the artist and song title, while EXPERT requires the exact release year. In COOPERATIVE mode, players work together to collect ten cards before running out of tokens. Read HITSTER’s official rules.

Check the playback setup first
Song playback can affect the experience. HITSTER’s official FAQ says that without a Spotify account, playback is limited to 20 seconds per song. It also describes manually searching for a song in a preferred streaming service as an option. Review the official HITSTER FAQ and make sure your group can use a workable playback method before game night.
SongPop Party: best for Switch-based local or online play
SongPop Party is a digital option for groups with access to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo lists both local couch play and online play for up to eight people. Its listing describes “hundreds of thousands” of unlockable songs sorted by genre, artist, decade, and topic. That figure is Nintendo’s product description; the listing does not state a publication year for it. Check Nintendo’s SongPop Party listing.

Choose it when your group wants a console-based music quiz and the flexibility to play locally or online. Nintendo’s listing establishes those group-play options, but does not provide detailed rules comparable to HITSTER’s official instructions. Check current regional availability on Nintendo’s listing before planning around the game.

- Choose HITSTER if everyone will be together and you want a physical party game centered on arranging songs on a timeline.
- Choose SongPop Party if your group has Nintendo Switch access and wants local couch or online play for up to eight.
- Check music access for HITSTER: the card game is required, and the companion app uses a phone and internet connection; the no-Spotify-account playback experience is limited to 20 seconds per song.
