The best multilingual live chat software depends on what you need translated. Zendesk documents two-way translation for live chat and other non-voice channels; Freshdesk documents ticket-conversation translation that agents trigger per ticket; Gorgias documents browser-language widget localization and multilingual automation content, but not automatic translation of every live agent message. Those are different capabilities, so compare the workflow—not just the number of listed languages.
This comparison focuses on the documented language features of Zendesk, Freshdesk, and Gorgias. Product details and commercial information are based on their official documentation accessed October 4, 2026; plans, language availability, and limits can change.
Quick comparison: which multilingual chat tool fits?
| Product | Documented language capability | Channels and workflow | Important limits or qualifications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk | Conversation translation for inbound and outbound messages; separate language lists apply to different product features. | Live chat, messaging, social and Sunshine Conversations, email, web forms, and API channels; agents can enable translation when a language-difference banner appears. | Incoming chat and messaging translations are not saved and can vary when generated again. Third-party widgets are unsupported. Detection uses recent comments and replies; longer messages improve results. Language support varies by feature. | Teams that need documented two-way translation across several non-voice channels in a broader service workspace. |
| Freshdesk | Freddy AI Live Translation automatically detects and translates ticket-conversation messages; the agent clicks Translate on each ticket and can inspect the original or adjust the detected language. | Ticket conversations; the documented workflow is per ticket rather than an always-on translation toggle. | Available only on selected Freshdesk Omnichannel/Freshdesk Omni plans. A billing-cycle limit applies, and translation stops when it is reached. The article gives a maximum translation length of 40,000 to 50,000 characters. Accounts created before December 2025 may have a different Omni experience. | Teams already using an eligible Freshdesk plan that want agent-controlled translation for ticket conversations. |
| Gorgias | Chat widget localization based on visitor browser language, plus multilingual flows and article recommendations; order management has built-in translations. | Website chat and configured automation content. Unsupported browser languages fall back to the configured default. | Flows and article recommendations need content in the widget’s language. The documented article does not establish automatic translation of every live agent message. The listed automation features require an AI Agent subscription. | Businesses that prioritize localized website chat and translated self-service or ecommerce-oriented automation content. |
Zendesk’s vendor comparison page listed a starting price of $19 per agent per month, billed annually, and a 14-day trial when accessed October 4, 2026. These are dated vendor-published details, not a complete quote or a guarantee of current availability. The cited Freshdesk and Gorgias language documentation does not establish comparable prices or free-plan terms.
What “multilingual live chat” can mean
A multilingual label can describe several separate jobs. A translated widget may let visitors read buttons and prompts in a familiar language without translating the messages they type. Message translation may help an agent and customer communicate across languages. A multilingual chatbot or help center needs its own translated answers and articles. Language-aware routing, meanwhile, sends a conversation to an agent who can handle it without machine translation.
#1 Best Overall
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
These features can coexist, but evidence for one does not prove the others. A vendor’s list of interface languages is not necessarily a list of languages supported by its AI replies, ticket translation, or reporting. Zendesk explicitly maintains feature-specific language lists; Gorgias documents widget localization and multilingual automation content; Freshdesk’s cited translation feature is for ticket conversations.
Check the task before comparing language counts
- Visitor interface: Are widget buttons, welcome messages, and prompts localized?
- Live conversation: Are incoming and outgoing customer and agent messages translated, and on which channels?
- Self-service and automation: Are flows, article recommendations, saved replies, and knowledge content available in the visitor’s language?
- Routing: Can the system identify language and route to a suitable agent, or does it rely on translation?
- Human review: Can the agent see the original text, correct a language selection, or verify a translation before acting?
1. Zendesk: broad documented channel coverage and two-way translation
Zendesk is the strongest documented match here when the requirement is translating conversations across multiple non-voice support channels. Its official conversation-translation documentation covers Zendesk Messaging and live chat, social and Sunshine Conversations, as well as email, web forms, and API channels. Voice is excluded. An agent can enable translation when the language-difference banner appears.
How Zendesk language detection and translation work
Zendesk infers an end-user’s language from recent comments and replies. Its documentation says longer messages produce better detection, but does not promise a minimum message length or a guaranteed result. Translation on the agent side depends on the language configured in that agent’s Support user profile. This makes profile accuracy part of the workflow, not just an account setup detail.
For customer chat and messaging, incoming translations are not saved. If the ticket is reloaded or updated, translation runs again and the result may vary. That is a meaningful consideration for teams that need a stable record of exactly what an agent reviewed. The documentation also says third-party widgets are unsupported, so confirm that your chat surface is a supported Zendesk widget before relying on the feature.
Language support is feature-specific
Do not treat Zendesk as having one universal language count. Its language-support matrix separates product features—for example, AI-agent response languages and triage languages have distinct lists. Verify the specific feature and language pair your workflow requires in Zendesk’s language-support documentation, rather than inferring support for translation from support for another feature.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
Plans and broader service tools
Zendesk positions live chat within Zendesk Messaging and a larger customer-service workspace that includes routing, automation, help-center tools, reporting, AI agents, and an app ecosystem. Its comparison page showed a starting price of $19 per agent per month when billed annually and a 14-day trial, as accessed October 4, 2026. Pricing and packaging are volatile; check the vendor’s comparison page for current terms and confirm whether the translation capability you need is included in the plan you are considering.
2. Freshdesk: agent-triggered translation for ticket conversations
Freshdesk’s documented Freddy AI Live Translation is a fit for teams whose multilingual work happens in ticket conversations and who want an agent to invoke translation when needed. The feature automatically detects and translates messages, but the agent uses a Translate control on each ticket. Agents can see the original message and change the detected language if it is wrong.

Eligibility, limits, and account differences
Freshdesk says translation is available on selected Freshdesk Omnichannel/Freshdesk Omni plans. Its support article warns that accounts signed up before December 2025 may have a different Freshdesk Omni experience, so plan eligibility and interface details should be checked against the specific account. Translation becomes unavailable after the account reaches its billing-cycle translation limit. The article gives a maximum translation length of 40,000 to 50,000 characters; confirm the applicable limit for your plan rather than assuming the top of that range applies.
Languages listed in the Freshdesk article
The Freshdesk article lists English US, German, Spanish (LATAM and Spain), French, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Czech, Danish, Flemish, Finnish, Norwegian, Japanese, Korean, simplified and traditional Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Estonian, Greek, Hebrew, and Hungarian. Czech appears twice in the article, so this list is presented as listed rather than as a deduplicated language count. Availability may also depend on the product configuration and plan.

3. Gorgias: localized chat widget and multilingual automation content
Gorgias is the documented choice for teams focused on displaying a localized website chat experience and preparing automation content in multiple languages. When configured, the chat widget matches the visitor’s browser language. If that browser language is unsupported, the widget uses the configured default.
What needs translating in Gorgias
Gorgias says flows and article recommendations need content available in the language matching the widget. Its order-management feature has built-in translations. The documented flows, article recommendations, and order-management capabilities require an AI Agent subscription. Localization can therefore reduce language friction at the visitor interface, but it still requires the business to prepare and maintain the relevant content.
The Gorgias documentation establishes localization and multilingual content configuration; it does not establish automatic translation of every live agent message. If agents must converse in languages they do not speak, verify that a separate message-translation workflow is available before selecting Gorgias on the assumption that widget localization solves that need.

Choose Zendesk when conversations cross channels
Zendesk’s documented translation scope is the broadest of these three for agent-customer conversations: it includes live chat and several other non-voice channels. It is the clearest fit if a team needs translation in messaging, social, email, web forms, or API-based conversations as well as chat. Validate the widget, language pair, agent profile setup, and handling of unsaved translations before rollout.

Freshdesk’s workflow suits a support team that prefers an explicit translation action on an eligible ticket rather than assuming every conversation is continuously translated. The ability to view the original and adjust detected language supports review, but the billing-cycle cap makes volume and plan eligibility essential procurement questions.
Choose Gorgias when visitor localization and content matter most
Gorgias is a stronger fit when the priority is a localized chat widget and multilingual flows, article recommendations, or order-management content. It is not the substantiated choice among these three for automatic live translation of every agent message, based on the documented feature described here.

Questions to ask before buying
- Which exact channels are covered? Ask whether the feature works in the website widget you deploy, native messaging, social, email, and ticket replies; do not infer channel coverage from a general multilingual claim.
- Is translation two-way? Confirm whether customer messages, agent replies, or both are translated, and whether the original remains available.
- How is language identified? Test short greetings, mixed-language text, names, and messages in the scripts your customers use. Determine whether detection uses browser language, message text, visitor selection, or agent choice.
- What happens on failure? Establish the fallback when a language is unsupported, detection is wrong, or a usage cap is reached. Decide whether the conversation should route to a language-skilled agent.
- What is included in the plan? Confirm the edition, add-ons, translation caps, billing-cycle reset, and any AI subscription needed for localization or automation.
- Who maintains translated content? Assign ownership for widget copy, flows, saved replies, help articles, and fallback language. Machine translation does not keep those materials accurate as policies and product details change.
How to evaluate translation quality safely
Before making a tool your default for customer conversations, trial it with representative support scenarios and have a fluent reviewer compare both the translated and original text. Include routine questions as well as cases where a mistranslation could change an action, such as a refund request, delivery address, account access issue, or product safety concern. This is an evaluation method, not a claim that any vendor guarantees a particular accuracy level.
- List the languages and channels your customers actually use, then map each to the vendor’s specific feature rather than its broad language list.
- Test brief and detailed messages, typos, mixed-language sentences, and region-specific vocabulary. Note incorrect detection and whether the agent can correct it.
- Check whether agents can inspect original text and whether translated content persists in the ticket record after reload, update, or handoff.
- Measure the agent steps required: automatic translation, a conversation toggle, a per-ticket button, or manual routing. Decide which is workable during busy periods.
- Simulate the usage-limit or unsupported-language case and define a fallback, such as routing to a qualified agent or asking the customer to continue in a supported language.
For high-consequence or ambiguous messages, translation should assist—not replace—human judgment. A language-skilled agent or qualified interpreter may be necessary when the intended meaning is unclear.
