The Ryzen 7 9800X3D works with many AM5 motherboards; it does not require an enthusiast-class chipset. AMD lists A620, B840, B850, B650, B650E, X870, X870E, X670, and X670E as supported chipset families. The right choice depends on the exact board’s CPU support and BIOS, plus your case, storage, expansion, and connectivity needs. Check the motherboard maker’s support page for the precise model and revision before buying.
Which motherboards are compatible with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
AMD specifies Socket AM5 and lists the following supported chipset families for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D:
- A620
- B840 and B850
- B650 and B650E
- X670 and X670E
- X870 and X870E
These are chipset-family compatibility listings, not confirmation that every individual motherboard or revision is ready to use. Verify the exact model on its manufacturer’s CPU support page and check the minimum BIOS version listed there. AMD’s processor specifications and supported chipset list are on its Ryzen 7 9800X3D product page.

Will the motherboard need a BIOS update?
Possibly. BIOS readiness depends on the board model and the firmware installed on the particular unit you receive, not just its chipset. Look up the 9800X3D in the manufacturer’s CPU support table and note the minimum BIOS version. If the board might ship with older firmware, check its manual for an update method that works before the system can boot, such as BIOS Flashback, if available.

Examples of model-specific requirements
- ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi: ASRock lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as supported from BIOS 1.00. That establishes CPU support for this model; it is not evidence of a price advantage or independent quality ranking. See the ASRock CPU support list.
- NZXT N7 B850: NZXT says BIOS 3.20 or later is required for the 9800X3D and newer CPUs. Its support page, updated June 25, 2026, says the system may boot on an earlier version but recommends updating immediately to prevent memory-related issues. These examples show why a chipset name alone cannot settle the BIOS question. Follow the instructions for the exact board, including any revision-specific notes.
How to choose a board for your build
Once compatibility and firmware are confirmed, compare the board against the parts and features you actually need. A higher chipset tier is not automatically necessary for gaming or for this CPU.

Case fit and layout
Match the board’s form factor—such as ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX—to a form factor supported by your case. Also check GPU length and thickness, slot spacing, and clearance for other expansion cards. A board can fit the case yet leave less room for a large graphics card or add-in card.
Storage and expansion
Compare the number and generation of M.2 slots with your planned drives. Check the board manual for lane-sharing rules that may disable or reduce another slot when particular connectors are populated. For graphics and other cards, confirm the primary PCIe slot’s generation and width, additional slot layout, and any clearance constraints in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Networking, USB, and headers
Choose Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and rear USB options based on the devices you use; confirm the exact wireless generation, port types, and counts on the product specifications. If your case has front USB-C or other front-panel ports, verify that the board has the matching internal header.
Memory support
The 9800X3D uses DDR5 and two memory channels, according to AMD. The maximum supported memory speed varies with the number and configuration of DIMMs, and a kit’s advertised EXPO speed is not guaranteed simply because the CPU supports DDR5. Check the board’s memory specifications and qualified vendor list (QVL) for your intended kit and configuration.

Firmware update options
If you cannot confirm that the installed BIOS meets the CPU’s minimum requirement, look for a documented update procedure that does not depend on an already-working CPU, if the board offers one. Read the board manual before assembly so you know which USB port, file format, and button sequence—if any—the update procedure requires.
Is a premium chipset required?
No. AMD’s supported list includes entry and enthusiast chipset families, including A620, B650, B850, X670E, and X870E. AMD used X670E and X870E boards in disclosed 9800X3D test configurations, but a test-system choice does not establish that those chipsets are required. Base the purchase on the exact board’s support, features, and fit rather than the chipset label alone.

What the 9800X3D means for the rest of the build
AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an 8-core, 16-thread processor with a 4.7 GHz base clock, up to 5.2 GHz boost, 96 MB of L3 cache, and 120 W default TDP. It is unlocked for overclocking. Those processor specifications do not substitute for checking the motherboard’s own supported features or firmware.
Plan for a separate CPU cooling solution: AMD lists the thermal solution as “Not Included” and says a liquid cooler is recommended for optimal performance. That is a recommendation, not a statement that liquid cooling is mandatory for every workload. Select a cooler compatible with the case and AM5 mounting requirements.
