The right PS5 monitor is one that supports the resolution and refresh rate you want over its HDMI connection—not simply one with the biggest refresh-rate number on the box. For 4K at up to 120Hz, look for a display with a compatible HDMI 2.1 input; for a desk-sized screen, a compatible 1440p monitor can also deliver up to 120Hz. Two well-documented options illustrate the trade-offs: the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM prioritizes OLED image quality, while the Sony INZONE M9 II adds PS5-specific HDR integration.
This is a practical shortlist, not a verified top-five ranking: the available model-level evidence is detailed for those two monitors, but does not establish three more finalists to the same standard. Prices and availability are not verified, so check current local listings before buying.
What to look for in a PS5 monitor
Start with the signal the console can actually send. Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K video output at up to 120Hz, when the display and setup support it. A monitor’s 144Hz, 160Hz, or 240Hz maximum does not let the PS5 exceed 120Hz; refresh rates above that ceiling may be useful if you also connect a PC.

A high refresh rate listed for a DisplayPort connection does not establish that the HDMI input accepts the same resolution and rate. #1 Best Overall
- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
Choose 4K or 1440p by screen size and priorities
4K is the higher-resolution option and suits buyers who want the sharpest supported console output. A compatible 1440p monitor is a reasonable desk-size alternative: Sony says PS5 supports 1440p output, including 60Hz and, on compatible displays, 120Hz. The console’s 1440p output test can check SDR or HDR at 60Hz or 120Hz and VRR. See Sony’s PS5 features for its compatibility details.
Verify VRR rather than assuming it
Variable refresh rate (VRR) can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh with the console’s graphical output, but a monitor’s high maximum refresh rate alone does not prove that its VRR works with PS5. Sony says results vary by display and game. Confirm the exact model’s PS5 VRR behavior and the connection requirements before treating the feature as a deciding factor.

| ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM | 27-inch 4K QD-OLED; supports 4K/120Hz over HDMI 2.1 and console VRR. Maximum refresh rate is 240Hz. | RTINGS reports sharp motion, low input lag, vivid color, and deep blacks in dark rooms. | Ambient light can raise black levels and desaturate dark colors. Its 240Hz maximum is above the PS5’s 120Hz output ceiling. |
| Sony INZONE M9 II | 27-inch 4K IPS with HDMI 2.1; supports console 4K/120Hz. Maximum refresh rate is 160Hz and it offers Auto HDR Tone Mapping with PS5 and PS5 Pro. | RTINGS reports low input lag and bright highlights; TechRadar also identifies it as a strong HDR option. | RTINGS notes low native contrast, blooming around bright objects, and a cloudy appearance in some content. |
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM: premium OLED image quality
RTINGS names the PG27UCDM its best tested monitor for PS5 and PS5 Pro in its 2026 guide. This 27-inch 4K QD-OLED accepts 4K/120Hz console signals over HDMI 2.1 and supports console VRR. Its OLED panel is most compelling in a darker room, where deep blacks and vivid color stand out. In a bright room, ambient light can lift those blacks and mute dark colors, so it is not an automatic choice for every setup.
The monitor’s 240Hz maximum is useful only for a source capable of sending more than 120 frames per second, such as a suitably configured PC; it does not raise PS5 output above 120Hz. Choose this model for its documented console compatibility and OLED characteristics, not as a value pick. See the RTINGS ASUS PG27UCDM review and its 2026 PS5/PS5 Pro monitor guide.

Sony INZONE M9 II: PS5-focused HDR features
The 27-inch 4K INZONE M9 II is an IPS monitor with full-array local dimming, HDMI 2.1, and a 160Hz maximum refresh rate. Its distinguishing PS5 feature is Auto HDR Tone Mapping, which is designed for PS5 and PS5 Pro. It supports console gaming at 4K/120Hz, and RTINGS reports low input lag and bright highlights.
Local dimming can improve highlights, but it does not eliminate the IPS panel’s contrast limitations: RTINGS reports blooming around bright objects and a cloudy screen in some content. The Sony’s console integration is a specific convenience, not proof that it delivers better image quality than every competing display. Which one fits your setup?
- Choose the ASUS if you want a 27-inch 4K OLED, play in a room where its deep blacks can show well, and are comfortable with a premium purchase.
- Choose the Sony if you want a 27-inch 4K IPS monitor with PS5-specific Auto HDR Tone Mapping and value bright highlights, while accepting the reported contrast and blooming drawbacks.
- Consider a compatible 1440p display if 4K is not essential and you want to prioritize a desk-sized screen or budget. Verify its HDMI signal support and PS5 VRR behavior for the exact model; the evidence here does not establish a specific 1440p recommendation.
- Ignore refresh-rate headroom as a PS5 upgrade if the only source you plan to connect is the console. A 160Hz or 240Hz maximum does not make PS5 games run above 120Hz.
How to get 4K/120Hz working on PS5
If the console does not show the expected signal, Sony recommends checking the display, cable, connection, and console settings. Follow these checks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm the monitor claims support for 4K/120Hz, not just 4K or a high refresh rate through a different input.
- Update the monitor’s firmware if an update is available.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor using the included PS5 HDMI cable, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz. The included cable is Sony’s recommendation; buying another cable is not automatically necessary.
- Use the monitor’s HDMI 2.1 port that supports 4K/120Hz. Some displays have different capabilities across their HDMI inputs.
- On PS5, set resolution to Automatic or 2160p as appropriate, then set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Check the console’s 120Hz output and VRR settings, and use the compatible display’s 1440p output test if you are setting up at 1440p.
