There is no evidence here for one mineral sunscreen that is best for everyone or guaranteed to leave no white cast. For a U.S. shortlist, start with the Drug Facts panel: a mineral-only sunscreen lists zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both as active ingredients. Then check for SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection, and water resistance—the American Academy of Dermatology’s recommended label attributes.
The products below are examples to compare, not winners from a head-to-head test of finish or protection. Tinted or sheer descriptions may help narrow choices, but a brand’s finish claim cannot guarantee how a sunscreen will look on every skin tone.
How to choose a mineral sunscreen
Check the active ingredients and protection claims
In U.S. labeling, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the mineral sunscreen actives. Look for them in the active-ingredient section rather than relying on broad marketing terms such as “mineral-based.” A product with other active ingredients as well is not mineral-only.

Match water resistance to how you will use it
For swimming or sweating, compare the water-resistance duration stated on the label and follow that product’s directions for reapplication. “Waterproof” is not an allowed sunscreen claim: the AAD says, “There’s actually no such thing as waterproof sunscreen.” Water and sweat can remove sunscreen.
Assess finish claims as claims, not guarantees
Tint, a product’s stated finish, and whether it is intended for face or body use can help narrow the options. NBC Select’s guide describes some tinted or sheer-finish products and also flags possible white cast for Blue Lizard Sensitive SPF 50. These are useful reported attributes, not assurance of the same cosmetic result for every person. Check the current package directions and label before buying.

These examples illustrate different label and finish considerations. The evidence available does not establish a controlled comparison of their wear, visible cast, or protection, so treat the attributes below as source-attributed information rather than an overall ranking.

What independent testing says—and does not say
Consumer Reports’ 2026 coverage says none of the mineral-only or mineral-plus-chemical sunscreens in its current crop were highly rated, and that its testing has never found a mineral sunscreen at the top of its ratings. Susan Booth, who leads Consumer Reports’ sunscreen testing, said: “None of the mineral-only or mineral-plus-chemical products in our current crop of sunscreens were highly rated.” This is a finding about Consumer Reports’ tested products and testing context, not a universal verdict on every mineral sunscreen. It also does not identify which product will look least chalky on an individual.

A practical shortlist checklist
- Confirm zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide in the active-ingredient panel if you want a mineral-only formula.
- Look for SPF 30 or higher and a broad-spectrum claim.
- If swimming or sweating, compare the label’s water-resistance duration and follow its reapplication directions.
- If visible cast is a concern, consider tinted options, but assess the result on your own skin rather than treating a finish description as a guarantee.
- Check whether the product directions match your intended face or body use, and recheck the current label before purchase.
