There is no single best microphone for every home vocal recording or professional music-production setup. The right choice depends on your room, how you will connect the mic, the clean gain available from your preamp, and how you prefer to work. The Shure MV7 is a practical USB/XLR option, the Shure SM7B is a close-miked dynamic studio choice with a gain-chain caveat, and the Neumann U 87 Ai offers three pickup patterns and studio controls.
How to choose a vocal microphone
Start with the room and recording workflow, not reputation alone. A directional mic used close to the singer can help reduce room sound reaching the recording, but distance and angle also change tone. In particular, Shure explains that proximity effect increases low-frequency response as a vocalist moves closer to a directional microphone (Shure’s microphone recording techniques).
- Room: Consider how much untreated-room sound or background noise you want the mic to capture. A close, directional setup may suit a less controlled room, but no microphone alone guarantees a good result in a reflective space.
- Connection: USB can provide a direct computer workflow; XLR requires a compatible interface, mixer, or preamp. Confirm which processing applies to each output.
- Gain: Check the interface or preamp’s clean gain capability, especially for a low-sensitivity dynamic mic.
- Placement: Distance and angle affect both room pickup and tone. Test a few positions before settling on one.
- Flexibility: A single cardioid pattern is straightforward; selectable patterns can accommodate more recording situations, but require more decisions and a suitable room.
Microphone comparison
| Microphone | Type and patterns | Connection and workflow | Key specifications and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shure MV7 | Dynamic, cardioid | USB or passive XLR. USB operation is USB-powered and supports app-controlled processing, auto-level functionality, and headphone monitoring. Shure says software settings do not affect the XLR audio. | 50 Hz–16 kHz frequency response; -55 dBV/Pa sensitivity. Shure suggests close placement at 1–6 inches for intimate sound and off-axis rejection. |
| Shure SM7B | Dynamic, cardioid | XLR connection into an appropriate preamp or interface. | 50 Hz–20 kHz frequency response; -59 dBV/Pa sensitivity. Its relatively low sensitivity makes available clean preamp gain an important check. |
| Neumann U 87 Ai | Studio microphone with omni, cardioid, and figure-eight patterns | Use with a compatible studio microphone input and recording chain. | 20 Hz–20 kHz stated frequency range; switchable low cut and pad. The manufacturer describes it for speech and vocals. |

Shure MV7: a direct USB option with an XLR path
The MV7 is the clearest fit here if you want to start by connecting a microphone directly to a computer, while retaining the option of an XLR setup later. Shure documents USB power, a headphone output, and app-controlled features for USB operation. Its XLR output is passive, and Shure states that software settings do not affect that signal; plan on using external processing in the XLR recording chain if needed. See the MV7 user guide for its documented operation.

Shure recommends close placement in the 1–6 inch range for a more intimate vocal sound and rejection of off-axis sound. That is a starting point rather than a fixed rule: adjust distance and angle to suit the singer and desired tone.
Shure SM7B: close-miked dynamic recording with gain to verify
Shure identifies the cardioid SM7B for studio instrumental and vocal applications. Its sensitivity is specified as -59 dBV/Pa, so check the actual clean gain available from your interface or preamp before buying. Shure’s guide conditionally recommends an inline booster or stronger preamp if the existing preamp does not provide more than 60 dB of gain; this is not a requirement for every interface or singer. Consult the SM7B user guide and confirm your equipment’s specifications.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Shure recommends speaking directly into the mic from 1–6 inches (2.54–15 cm). Moving closer can increase bass through proximity effect while helping reduce off-axis noise. The guide describes bass-rolloff and presence-boost switches and includes standard and close-talk windscreens; Shure says its larger A7WS windscreen can reduce plosive sounds and wind noise in close-talk use.

Neumann U 87 Ai: selectable patterns for a flexible studio setup
The U 87 Ai adds omni, cardioid, and figure-eight pickup patterns, plus switchable low cut and pad. Those controls make it a useful option to consider when your studio work calls for different pickup patterns or recording conditions. Neumann describes it as a studio microphone for speech and vocals and publishes its U 87 Ai specifications. The available manufacturer information does not show that it is the right choice for every singer, room, or budget.

Set up and position the mic
- Match the connection to the workflow. For the MV7, choose USB for its documented computer-connected controls and monitoring, or passive XLR into a compatible audio input. For the SM7B or U 87 Ai, plan on an appropriate XLR recording chain.
- Check gain before recording. Verify the preamp or interface’s clean gain capability for the microphone and your intended vocal level. For the SM7B, apply Shure’s booster or stronger-preamp advice only if the available gain is insufficient for your needs.
- Mount the mic securely. A stable stand or boom helps maintain consistent distance. Use suitable cable and pop protection or a windscreen where the microphone and vocal technique call for it.
- Begin with close placement, then listen. Shure’s SM7B guidance uses 1–6 inches as a starting range. Move closer or farther while listening for bass buildup, plosives, room sound, and the balance you want.
- Check processing at the output. With the MV7, remember that its USB software settings do not carry over to its XLR audio. Apply any desired processing in the XLR recording chain.
What this comparison can and cannot establish
The options represent different workflows rather than a tested ranking: a USB/XLR dynamic mic, a dynamic studio mic whose gain needs checking, and a multi-pattern studio microphone. The cited product sources are manufacturer documentation, not independent controlled comparisons. They do not establish which microphone sounds best on a particular singer, prove that an expensive condenser suits an untreated room, or confirm current prices and availability.
Shure’s October 26, 2020 comparison of the MV7 and SM7B presents the MV7 as aimed at podcasters, streamers, and vocalists seeking USB and XLR, and contrasts it with the SM7B’s need for a strong preamp. Treat that as dated manufacturer guidance rather than an independent test: Shure’s MV7-versus-SM7B comparison.
