For a value-focused replacement, start with the TP-Link Deco BE63; for an apartment or smaller home, first decide whether you need mesh at all, then compare eero 6 and eero 7. In a larger or multi-story home, compare multi-node Deco kits with NETGEAR Orbi, while ASUS ZenWiFi and eero Pro 7 are options for buyers prioritizing premium features. The right choice depends on your layout, broadband speed, devices, and budget—not just a brand’s advertised coverage figure.

Which alternative fits your home and budget?

Use this as a shortlist, not a promise that a given kit will cover a particular building. Models, included node counts, ports, and local pricing can vary by SKU and retailer.

Situation Systems to compare What to weigh
Small home or apartment A conventional router; eero 6 or eero 7 if mesh is needed Mesh may be unnecessary in a compact home. eero 6 is a lower-cost Wi-Fi 6 option; eero 7 is Wi-Fi 7 but dual-band and has no 6 GHz band.
Value-oriented whole-home upgrade TP-Link Deco BE63 A Wi-Fi 7 value candidate; check the pack size, Ethernet port speeds, and actual current price.
Midrange Wi-Fi 6E TP-Link Deco XE75 or XE5300 A two-pack XE75 may suit a smaller space; XE5300 is a three-pack XE75 variant for broader coverage needs. Confirm the exact SKU and port limits.
Large or multi-story home NETGEAR Orbi 770 or a multi-node Deco kit Compare node count, wired-backhaul support, placement options, and port rates. A coverage estimate is not a guarantee.
Premium, multi-gig, or feature-led setup ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 or BQ16 Pro; eero Pro 7 Match bands and ports to your internet plan and devices; consider app controls and any subscription-dependent features.
Upper-midrange Wi-Fi 6E without a monthly feature fee ASUS ZenWiFi ET9 RTINGS describes its features as not locked behind a monthly subscription; compare its current price with Deco offers.

Small homes: check whether mesh solves a real problem

A conventional router may be sufficient for a small home or apartment. Mesh is more useful when dead spots persist, the home spans multiple floors, or obstacles make it difficult for one router to reach important rooms. TechRadar makes this distinction in its guidance on mesh Wi-Fi routers.

If mesh is warranted, RTINGS names eero 6 as a tested budget choice and assesses it as suitable for internet service up to roughly 700 Mbps. That is RTINGS’ product assessment, not a guaranteed Wi-Fi speed for every home. Its trade-offs include fewer configuration options and some features behind eero Plus. The eero 7 adds Wi-Fi 7 but remains dual-band, so it does not provide 6 GHz; TechRadar describes it as easy to set up and suitable for small-to-medium homes, with some features requiring a subscription. See RTINGS’ mesh Wi-Fi system recommendations and TechRadar’s mesh router guide.

Value upgrades: Deco BE63

TP-Link Deco BE63 is a Wi-Fi 7 mesh system named as a value pick by both WIRED and RTINGS. WIRED’s 2026 guide lists a three-pack at a $470 MSRP and suggests coverage of 7,600 square feet. Those are guide figures, not a live sale price or a guaranteed result in your home. Check the actual kit and price available in your region, as well as its port speeds, before buying. Sources: WIRED’s mesh Wi-Fi router guide and RTINGS’ mesh system guide.

Midrange: Deco XE75 and XE5300

The Deco XE75 family is a Wi-Fi 6E tri-band alternative. RTINGS identifies XE5300 as a Costco three-pack variant of the XE75 and suggests a two-pack XE75 for smaller spaces. Compare the precise model number and Ethernet limits with your broadband plan: a port capped at 1 Gbps can constrain a faster multi-gig connection. Wi-Fi 6E adds a 6 GHz band, but devices must support it to use it. References: RTINGS and WIRED.

Large homes and premium options

For larger layouts, compare complete kits rather than brand names alone: included nodes, Ethernet ports, supported bands, and the option of wired backhaul all affect the fit. WIRED’s 2026 guide lists an Orbi 770 three-pack at a $700 MSRP with suggested coverage of 8,000 square feet; an ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 two-pack at a $690 MSRP with 6,000 square feet; and an eero Pro 7 three-pack at an $800 MSRP with 6,000 square feet. These are WIRED’s editorial comparison values, not guaranteed coverage or current retail prices. See the WIRED comparison for its product profiles.

ASUS ZenWiFi ET9 is another Wi-Fi 6E option: RTINGS describes ASUS app management and says the features it discusses are not locked behind a monthly subscription. For a wider selection of candidates, compare the exact band, port, and node configuration for ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 or BQ16 Pro, Orbi 770, and eero Pro 7 rather than assuming similarly priced systems are interchangeable. How many mesh nodes do you need?

Begin with the floor plan and the rooms that need reliable service—not just the home’s square footage. Count levels, note thick walls and other obstructions, and consider where a node can maintain a usable link to the main router. RTINGS suggests starting with two nodes for a smaller home; a larger home may need three. Those are planning starting points, not a universal formula.

Google’s placement guidance says coverage depends on home size, construction, and neighborhood Wi-Fi congestion. It recommends placing Google points roughly two to three rooms apart and elevating them where possible; putting a point directly in a dead zone can leave it with a poor connection to the rest of the system. Thick brick or concrete walls and multiple floors can complicate placement. Google also recommends no more than five Google Wifi devices on one network because adding more may harm performance. These are Google-specific recommendations, not a node limit for other brands. Read Google’s guidance on how many Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi devices you need.

If the home has Ethernet wiring and the candidate system supports Ethernet backhaul, check the manufacturer’s instructions and model-specific port requirements. Wired connections may be worth considering for challenging layouts, but the product guides cited here do not establish a universal performance guarantee.

What to compare before you buy

  • Layout and coverage: Account for floors, wall materials, obstacles, dead zones, and the number of nodes included. Manufacturers’ or reviewers’ coverage estimates are not promises for your building. Google explains that construction and congestion affect coverage in its device-planning guidance.
  • Internet speed and Ethernet ports: Check WAN and LAN port rates against your broadband plan and wired devices. A 1 Gbps port can limit a multi-gig service on the wired connection.
  • Wi-Fi bands and client support: Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz; Wi-Fi 7 features matter only when the router, client device, and environment can use them. Compare dual-band and tri-band designs rather than choosing by generation number alone. Product distinctions are covered by WIRED and RTINGS.
  • Setup and controls: eero and Google emphasize app-guided setup; ASUS and TP-Link provide their own apps and configuration options. Decide whether you want basic management or more control. See RTINGS and TechRadar.
  • Subscriptions: Check which security, parental-control, and other features are included and which require a recurring plan. Packaging can change, so verify the current terms for the model you choose.
  • Compatibility and expansion: Verify model-family compatibility before adding to an existing system. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh with earlier Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points. Its support page states: “Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) can’t be combined with Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points (Wi-Fi 5) in a mesh network.”
  • Total cost: Compare the price of the exact kit and any extra nodes you may need. MSRP and old sale prices are not reliable substitutes for current local retail pricing.

Replacing Google Wifi without carrying over assumptions

Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, and Nest Wifi Pro are not one freely interchangeable mesh family. In particular, Google explicitly rules out mixing Nest Wifi Pro with the older Google Wifi or Nest Wifi devices in the same mesh. If switching brands, plan on replacing the mesh system rather than assuming existing points will extend the new network. Google’s page also explains how coverage planning varies by home conditions: Google Home and Nest Help.

Before choosing a replacement, write down the broadband speed, the rooms and floors with weak signal, your Ethernet wiring, and the devices that need Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. Then select a kit whose included node count and ports match those facts. A newer Wi-Fi label alone does not establish that your devices or broadband will benefit from an upgrade.
