No single rotary shaver is the best for every man. The right one depends on how often you shave, whether you want wet or dry use, how much you prioritise skin comfort, and how much you are prepared to spend on replacement heads over the life of the razor. Philips, the brand behind Norelco shavers in North America, groups its current electric shavers by the experience each range is designed to deliver. That grouping is the most practical starting point for a buyer, and it is the basis for the comparison below.

Rotary and foil heads shave differently

A rotary head uses several round cutters that move in different directions. Philips says this design follows the contours of the face and captures hairs growing at different angles. Philips recommends small circular movements rather than the long, straight strokes many men use with a foil shaver. The company also says the better choice depends on beard growth, technique, and personal preference, so neither head type is superior for everyone.

A rotary shaver is worth a close look if you are willing to change your motion to small circles and want the head to adapt to your jawline and neck. If you are used to straight passes and find that method comfortable, a foil-style shaver may suit you better. Try the new motion for several weeks before deciding, since most of the early difficulty is technique rather than the machine.

How Philips’s current ranges differ

Philips’s official range guide describes each series by its intended purpose. The table below uses that positioning. Where the guide does not list a specific feature, the cell says so; check the local product page for the model you are considering.

These descriptions tell you what Philips intends each range to do. They do not rank the ranges against each other, and they do not specify wet/dry permission, charging type, or runtime for every model. Those details belong to the individual product.

What a model-level specification looks like

The clearest way to see what a model actually offers is to read its product specification sheet. Philips’s SP9888/83 Wet & Dry Electric Shaver, listed as part of the S9000 Prestige line, shows the level of detail to expect. Its sheet, dated 2025-11-06, claims the following:

Rank #2
Philips Norelco 3900 Electric Shaver, Storm Blue
  • SkinProtect Technology: Achieve a clean, gentle shave with 5D pivot contour and AntiCorrosion Shaving System
  • ContourFlex: 5-directional pivoting head adjusts to face and neck curves, ensuring smooth contact
  • ComfortCut Blades: Rounded caps shield blades, cutting hair just above skin level for a smooth glide
  • Pop-up Trimmer: Perfect for maintaining your mustache and trimming sideburns with precision
  • Long-lasting Battery: Enjoy up to 60 minutes of cordless shaving on a 1-hour charge with Li-ion battery
  • Up to 60 minutes of cordless shaving on a single charge
  • A wireless Qi charging pad
  • Dry shaving, or wet shaving with gel or foam, including use in the shower
  • Flexible rotary heads
  • A sensor that reads hair density, described in the sheet as follows: “The electric shaver has intelligent facial-hair sensing technology that reads hair density 500 times per second.”
  • Click-on nose-trimmer, precision-trimmer, and cleansing-brush attachments

These are Philips’s own specifications for this one model. They do not transfer to the rest of the series, and a sheet from late 2025 may not match the version sold in your country today. Use the figures as a checklist for what to confirm, not as a guarantee.

Matching a shaver to your routine

Work through these questions in order. Each one narrows the field before you compare individual models.

Rank #3
Philips Norelco 7800 Electric Shaver, Black
  • Made of up to 250,000 micro-tech beads per square cm, Nano SkinGlide coating improves gliding on skin by up to 30%*, to minimize irritation.
  • With up to 90,000 cutting actions per minute, the SteelPrecision blades shave close, cutting more hair per stroke*. The 45 high-performance blades are self-sharpening and made in Europe.
  • The intelligent facial-hair sensor reads hair density 250 times per second. The technology dynamically auto-adapts cutting power for an effortless and gentle shave.
  • Motion-sensing technology tracks how you shave and guides you to an improved shaving technique with fewer passes.
  • Fully flexible heads turn 360° to follow your facial contours. Experience optimal skin contact for a thorough and comfortable shave.
  • How often do you shave? If you shave daily, pay attention to cordless run time and charging method, because they determine how often the shaver needs a charge. Philips’s runtime claim for the SP9888/83 is a starting point, not a measure of how long your own shave will take.
  • Do you want wet shaving? Check whether the model is permitted for wet use and whether it supports gel or foam. Confirm this in the manual, since wet permission is a model-level feature.
  • Is comfort your main concern? Philips positions the Series 7000 around skin comfort. That is a design intent. Philips does not guarantee that any model will prevent irritation for you.
  • Do you want guidance and advanced features? The i9000 Prestige Ultra and i9000 are the ranges Philips describes for advanced technology and guidance.
  • Do you need trimming attachments? Look at whether the model includes a precision trimmer or nose trimmer, because these are not standard across all models.
  • What is your budget, including replacement heads? A lower purchase price does not settle the question if the heads cost more over time. See the next section before deciding.

Ownership costs: replacement heads and cleaning

Philips’s current maintenance guidance says most models need replacement heads about every two years. The guidance also notes that Quick Clean Pod owners need replacement cartridges, and that compatible shavers can be cleaned manually under running water. The guidance does not give a price, and the cost depends on the model, how often you use it, and any optional accessories. Compare local head prices for your exact model before you buy.

Replacement heads are model-specific

Do not order heads by brand name alone. Philips’s replacement sheet for the RQ12/72 shaving unit, dated 2022-08-24, states that the part is discontinued and that the SH70/72 replaces it for SensoTouch 3D (RQ12xx) and Arcitec (RQ10xx) shavers. The same sheet says the SH71 is not compatible with those older models. If you own one of these shavers, confirm current stock and compatibility before buying, because availability changes over time.

Before you buy: verification steps

  1. Record the exact model number from the packaging or product label. Philips uses codes such as SP9888/83, and a range name alone is not enough to identify a shaver.
  2. Open the Philips product page for your country and compare the features listed there. Model names, bundle contents, warranty terms, and availability can differ by country.
  3. Download the manual for that model and confirm wet or dry permission, charging method, and cleaning instructions.
  4. Look up the replacement head part number for that exact model. Do not assume a head from another model fits.
  5. Check the warranty terms and whether replacement heads are stocked locally before committing.

What the evidence does and does not establish

  • The range descriptions, feature lists, and runtime and sensor figures in this guide come from Philips’s own documentation. They describe Philips’s products and should be read as manufacturer statements.
  • No independent head-to-head test of current Philips or other rotary models was found, so no claim here establishes that one shaver outperforms the others.
  • Consumer discussions and editorial reviews exist, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of all current models.
  • No market statistic on rotary shaver performance or satisfaction was established.
  • Skin reaction and closeness vary between individuals. The comparison above describes intended use, not results you can expect.
  • This guide is based on manufacturer documentation and does not report hands-on testing.
