There is no single fastest T-shirt printing machine. The quickest setup is the one whose whole production line, from pretreatment through curing, pressing and handling, matches your garments, artwork and order size. A printer’s advertised speed describes one stage of that line, not finished shirts per hour, so a machine that wins on the spec sheet can still lose on output.

Choose the method before the machine

Most buying mistakes start with the printer rather than the method. Each method suits a different garment, artwork type and volume, and that fit matters more than any single speed claim.

Method Typical fit Main workflow consideration
Direct-to-garment (DTG) Detailed, full-color artwork on cotton; short runs and on-demand work The garment is pretreated, printed, then cured with a heat press or dryer. Dark garments can need a white underbase and extra steps.
Direct-to-film (DTF) Cotton, polyester and blends; varied jobs and mixed fabrics Print onto film, apply adhesive powder, cure the powder, then heat-press the transfer. Downstream stages often set the output rate.
Screen printing Large quantities of the same design Screens must be prepared before printing. Setup cost is spread across repeated pieces, and multi-color jobs add setup work.
Sublimation Polyester garments only Dye bonds with polyester fibers. Fabric suitability is a hard constraint; sublimation is not a general method for cotton T-shirts.
Heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) Names, numbers, logos and simple graphics Cut film on a cutter, or print and cut printable film, then heat-press. Good for simple artwork rather than photographic detail.

Mimaki’s guidance on T-shirt printing makes the same point: method choice depends on fabric, artwork, order size and the finish you need. Its T-shirt printing methods and production guide also recommends testing the garment, film, powder and heat-press settings together before committing to commercial production. Treat that as vendor advice and check the supplier’s current process instructions for your materials.

What manufacturer speed figures measure

Vendors publish speed figures, but they measure different things. Compare them only after you know what each one covers.

Claim Product and context What it covers
Up to 42 dark garments or 57 light garments per hour Brother DTG, in its high-volume DTG/DTF product context; vendor page checked in 2026 A manufacturer rate for finished garments. The page does not state a common independent test protocol.
Less than 10 seconds to print a light garment Ricoh Ri 2000 DTG product page; checked in 2026 Printing time only. It does not cover pretreatment, curing, loading or removing the shirt.
Up to 400 impressions per hour Kornit Apollo product page; checked in 2026 Impressions, which are not the same as finished shirts. Do not set this beside garments-per-hour figures.

No independent head-to-head speed test was found for these machines, so do not rank brands on these numbers alone. Ask each vendor what garment, print size, color mode, operator count and finishing equipment its rate assumes. Then time the full job yourself with accepted shirts as the unit of output.

Mimaki states the principle plainly for DTF: “Printer speed alone does not determine DTF production capacity.” It adds that “if one stage is slower, it can become a bottleneck as order volumes grow.” The same logic applies to every method. A fast printer feeding a slow press produces no more shirts than that press can handle.

DTG: pretreatment, printing and curing

DTG is the most direct route to full-color detail on cotton, but it has more steps than a printer’s headline speed suggests. Ricoh describes the workflow as design and pretreatment, printing, then curing. Pretreatment can be applied by hand, with a dedicated machine, or in an integrated system on some models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step DTG workflow

  1. Prepare the artwork and garment. Set up the design file and color profile for the garment color.
  2. Pretreat the garment. Apply pretreatment manually, with a dedicated machine, or through an integrated system, depending on the model.
  3. Print. On dark garments, a white underbase is usually needed before the color layer.
  4. Cure. Heat-press the printed garment to set the ink. Ricoh’s process description states that “in 60 to 90 seconds, heat press machines will cure the ink into the shirt.” This is Ricoh’s described workflow, not a universal setting; follow the current instructions from your ink and garment suppliers.

Space and environment

Brother’s FAQ for its GTXpro setup lists printer dimensions of 55 × 51 × 21 inches and says an average complete setup can run in a 12 × 12 foot room. The FAQ also gives temperature and humidity ranges and recommends a clean, climate-controlled room. These figures describe Brother’s own setup; confirm the requirements for the exact model and any pretreatment or press equipment before planning a layout. Your footprint also needs room for work surfaces, curing or press stations and consumable storage.

DTF: where the bottleneck usually sits

DTF moves the image onto a transfer rather than printing directly onto the shirt, which is why it handles mixed fabrics well. It also has more stations that can limit throughput.

  1. Print the design onto DTF film.
  2. Apply adhesive powder to the printed ink while it is still wet.
  3. Cure the powder so the adhesive bonds to the film.
  4. Heat-press the transfer onto the garment.

Mimaki recommends planning powdering, curing and press capacity around the volume you expect, then testing the complete film, powder, garment and press combination. Count each station when you estimate output. If the printer can run faster than the powder and press stations, add capacity there before buying a faster printer.

Screen printing, sublimation and HTV

Screen printing

Screen printing takes the most time to set up because screens must be prepared for each color. That work is worth it when one design repeats across a large run. For a single shirt or a short job with many colors, the setup usually outweighs the speed benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sublimation

Sublimation dye bonds with polyester fibers, so it is effectively limited to suitable polyester garments. A cotton shirt will not take the image in a durable way, so treat fabric suitability as a go or no-go decision before comparing machines.

Heat-transfer vinyl

HTV is well suited to names, numbers and logos. A cutter handles cut film, while a print-and-cut system works with printable film. Either way, the finished job is pressed. Complex, multi-tone artwork is generally a poor fit.

Match the machine to your job

Job profile Likely fit Reason
Varied one-off personalization on cotton DTG Low setup per design and full-color detail, with pretreatment and curing as ongoing steps.
Mixed garment materials and varied artwork DTF Transfers work across cotton, polyester and blends, but powder and press capacity must keep pace.
One design repeated in large batches Screen printing Setup is amortized across the run; the per-piece cost falls as quantity rises.
Polyester garments with full-color graphics Sublimation Dye bonds with the fabric, so the shirt must be suitable polyester.
Names, numbers and simple logos HTV Cut or print-and-cut film with a press; simple artwork keeps the workflow short.

Buying checklist

  • Fabric range: confirm which garments the method accepts before comparing printers.
  • Order profile: separate one-off personalization from repeated batches of the same image.
  • Artwork: full-color photographic detail, simple graphics and multi-color screen work each favor different methods.
  • Full-workflow rate: estimate accepted finished shirts per hour, including loading, pretreatment, transfer handling, curing, pressing and rejects.
  • Required equipment: pretreatment and curing for DTG; film, powder, curing and press capacity for DTF; cutter and press for HTV; screens and press setup for screen printing.
  • Space and environment: include the printer footprint plus work surfaces, press stations and storage, and check the manufacturer’s environmental requirements.
  • Garment testing: test your actual garments and settings. Durability, wash performance and hand feel depend on the ink or film, the cure and the care instructions.
  • Operating cost: request current quotes for ink, film, powder, maintenance, service, training and any compatible press. Vendor material does not provide a standard cost-per-shirt comparison.

Questions to put to vendors

  • Which garment color, print size and color mode does the stated rate assume?
  • How many operators and how much finishing equipment were in the test?
  • What is the output rate for accepted, cured shirts, not just printed ones?
  • Which pretreatment, curing and press settings does the rate depend on?
  • What service coverage, installation requirements and consumable availability apply in my region?

Practical buying path

Start by listing your garments and your most common job. Choose the method that fits that job, then price a complete line rather than a single printer. Ask for a demonstration with your own garments and artwork, time the full sequence, and count accepted shirts. That result, not a brochure figure, tells you whether a machine will handle your volume quickly and efficiently.

The Bottom Line

Pick the method for your garments and artwork first, then size the entire line. The fastest machine for your shop is the one whose printing, pretreatment or powder, curing, pressing and handling deliver the most accepted shirts per hour for your job.
