For the highest published tow ratings in this 2026 U.S. comparison, look first at the Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L: Lincoln lists up to 8,700 lb when properly equipped. The right choice still depends on the exact drivetrain, wheels, towing equipment, loaded trailer, and how much luggage must fit with the third row occupied. For that last question, the Navigator L’s 36.1 cu. ft. behind row three is a more useful road-trip figure than maximum cargo volume with seats folded.
How to choose a three-row luxury SUV for towing and road trips
Start with the trailer you will actually tow, not the largest number in a headline. Then check whether the luggage for your usual number of passengers fits behind the third row. A vehicle can offer substantial total cargo volume with seats folded and still leave limited space when all three rows are in use.
- Towing: Compare the rating for the exact engine, drivetrain, wheel choice, and tow equipment. A maximum rating applies only under the conditions stated by the manufacturer.
- People and luggage: Look for cargo volume behind the third row if your family regularly travels with that row occupied. Confirm the second-row seating layout you want.
- Trip fit: Check garage and driveway dimensions, turning space, cargo access, and whether the SUV is manageable where you will park and maneuver it.
- Real-world comfort: Arrange a test drive with the people who will travel in the vehicle. Highway ride, noise, seat comfort, and fuel use are not established as comparable winners by the specifications below.

Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L: highest listed maximum here
Lincoln’s 2026 Black Label specifications list up to 8,700 lb of towing for both the standard-wheelbase Navigator and Navigator L when properly equipped. The wheel caveat matters: with 24-inch wheels, Lincoln lists maximums of 8,500 lb for Navigator and 8,400 lb for Navigator L. Treat these as configuration-specific ceilings, not a promise that every Navigator can tow that amount.

Cadillac Escalade: check drivetrain and equipment
Cadillac lists the 2026 Escalade at up to 8,100 lb with rear-wheel drive and 7,900 lb with four-wheel drive when properly equipped. The ESV is the longer version and is intended to add cargo room, but the cited page does not establish a precise behind-third-row volume for this comparison.
Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 and Audi Q7: ratings depend on the model
Mercedes-Benz lists 7,700 lb for the 2026 GLS 450. Audi’s 2026 Q7 overview gives a range by model: up to 4,400 lb for the Q7 45 and 7,700 lb for the Q7 55, with towing accessories required. Do not apply the Q7 55 figure to a Q7 45.

Volvo XC90 B6 AWD: lower maximum, explicit roof-load figure
Volvo lists up to 5,000 lb towing for the 2026 XC90 B6 AWD. Its U.S. specification page also lists a 220 lb maximum roof load for that configuration. Check the vehicle-specific roof limit before adding crossbars or a cargo box; this figure is not a universal limit for three-row SUVs.

Among the figures available here, Lincoln provides a direct standard-versus-extended-wheelbase comparison: the 2026 Navigator has 21.6 cu. ft. behind row three, while the Navigator L has 36.1 cu. ft. Lincoln also lists, respectively, 60.8 and 75.4 cu. ft. behind the second row, and 107 and 121.6 cu. ft. behind the first row. Those larger figures reflect progressively more folded seats; they do not describe the space available with every passenger seat in use.

For the other models, the cited specifications do not establish a matching behind-third-row volume. The GLS’s 17.4–84.7 cu. ft. range is a total cargo-capacity range, not a directly comparable third-row-up measurement. Cadillac says the Escalade ESV adds cargo space but the cited page does not give the precise figure. Audi’s overview and Volvo’s specification page likewise do not supply a comparable third-row-up number here.
If luggage space with all seats occupied is a deciding factor, bring the bags, stroller, or other bulky items you actually travel with to a dealer and test the exact seating configuration. A published volume is useful for screening; a physical fit check answers whether your gear works.

What to verify before towing
A manufacturer’s maximum tow rating is only one part of the towing calculation. Before choosing a vehicle or setting off, verify these figures for the specific SUV and trailer combination:
- Loaded trailer weight: Use the trailer’s actual expected weight with cargo, fluids, and installed equipment, not its empty weight.
- Vehicle payload and occupants: Passengers and cargo consume payload capacity. Confirm the vehicle’s payload limit and account for what is inside it.
- Tongue weight: Check the trailer’s loaded tongue weight against the vehicle and hitch limits. It contributes to the load carried by the SUV.
- Hitch, wiring, and tow package: Confirm that the exact vehicle has compatible equipment and that the rating’s required accessories are installed. Audi explicitly conditions its Q7 towing figures on towing accessories.
- Drivetrain and wheels: Match the rating to the specific configuration. The Navigator’s 24-inch-wheel limits, for example, are lower than its other listed maximums.
Do not assume a high tow rating means the SUV can carry a full passenger load and a heavily loaded trailer at once. The vehicle’s payload, hitch limits, trailer tongue weight, and loaded trailer weight all need to fit the applicable limits.

Long-road-trip checks that specifications cannot settle
Official capacity and towing figures do not determine whether a particular SUV will suit your family for a full day on the highway. Compare the actual vehicle and configuration you would buy rather than assuming the largest or most expensive model is automatically the most comfortable.
- Have each regular passenger sit in their usual row, including the third row, and assess access and comfort.
- Load representative luggage with the third row upright; check whether the cargo opening and floor make loading practical.
- Drive on the highway as well as around town, listening for noise and judging ride comfort for your own preferences.
- Check fuel-economy information for the exact configuration and consider the effect of towing; Volvo notes that real-world fuel economy varies. Its 2026 XC90 B6 AWD page estimates 23 mpg combined, but that estimate is specific to that configuration, not a cross-model comparison.
- Measure the parking space, garage opening, and driveway clearance, then consider how the vehicle will turn and maneuver when loaded or towing.
Should you add a roof cargo box?
A roof box can preserve interior cargo room when all three rows are occupied, but it must be compatible with the SUV, crossbars, and the total roof-load limit. Count the box, crossbars, and cargo as part of the roof load, and check the exact vehicle’s instructions. Volvo’s listed 220 lb maximum roof load applies to the 2026 XC90 B6 AWD specification cited above; it should not be generalized to the other vehicles.
