There is no single best VPN for every Linux user. Proton VPN is a strong fit if you want documented GUI and CLI options; NordVPN offers an app plus manual setup; and ExpressVPN lists support for several common distributions. Private Internet Access (PIA) is a notable GUI option in an independent comparison, while Mullvad is worth considering if anonymity-oriented account setup matters to you. Choose by your distribution, preferred interface, and the protections you need—not by an unqualified speed ranking.

How to choose a VPN for Linux

Start with the installation path. A graphical app is easier to manage for many users, while a command-line client may suit people who prefer terminal workflows. Manual OpenVPN or WireGuard setup can work without a provider’s dedicated app, but it may require more configuration and troubleshooting. Linux support is not universal: check that the provider documents your distribution and version before subscribing.

The interface gap is real. Top10VPN says that, among 59 VPNs it tested, 15 had a Linux GUI; its page says it last tested the guide in September 2026. That figure describes Top10VPN’s tested group, not the entire VPN market. Top10VPN’s Linux comparison also ranks providers differently from other reviewed guides, so treat rankings as recommendations based on each publisher’s criteria, not a consensus verdict.

For security, check the app’s kill-switch behavior and DNS or IPv6 leak protection, then confirm whether the features you want are available on your plan and in your Linux app. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server; it does not make you anonymous or protect you from every online threat.

Mullvad Not established by the cited comparison details here. Top10VPN includes it as an anonymity-oriented alternative; the evidence does not support placing it in the ranked five.

Distribution and feature details above reflect the linked provider or comparison pages, not independent verification of every configuration. Check the live documentation for your specific release before installing.

1. Proton VPN: GUI, CLI, or manual setup

Proton documents a Linux GUI for Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora, and a CLI app for those distributions plus Arch. It also provides manual OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration. This makes it a flexible option if you want a graphical client but may need a command-line or manual route on a different setup. The company says its Linux offering includes DNS and IPv6 leak protection and kill-switch options; confirm feature and plan availability on the current Proton Linux download page.

2. NordVPN: app or NetworkManager configuration

NordVPN documents a Linux app as well as manual NetworkManager and OpenVPN instructions. It recommends NordLynx, which the company describes as based on WireGuard. That recommendation is NordVPN’s own guidance, not an independent comparative speed result. The supplied documentation does not establish a definitive supported-distribution list, so check NordVPN’s Linux page for your distro and installation method.

3. ExpressVPN: broad named distribution list

ExpressVPN’s Linux page names Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, and Linux Mint, and lists GUI/CLI setup with Lightway, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. Its page also makes claims about leak protection and audits; treat those as provider statements unless you verify the underlying audit scope and findings. See the current ExpressVPN Linux documentation for installation instructions and compatibility.

4. Private Internet Access: a GUI option, with setup caveats

Top10VPN ranks PIA first in its Linux comparison and describes its Linux app as open source, with a GUI and WireGuard support. The same guide calls out distribution limitations and complexity for beginners. Those are comparison-site findings; check PIA’s current official documentation for your exact distro, app version, and plan before relying on a feature.

5. Mullvad: an alternative outside the ranked five

Top10VPN includes Mullvad on its Linux shortlist as an anonymity-oriented option. The cited evidence does not establish enough detail to compare its current Linux interface and distribution support against the four providers above, so consider it an alternative to investigate rather than a fifth-place ranking.

Why published rankings disagree

Top10VPN names PIA its overall Linux pick, Security.org emphasizes Proton VPN for privacy, and Tom’s Guide ranks NordVPN first. Their differing results reflect differing evaluation criteria; none establishes a universal winner for every distro or user. Top10VPN, Security.org, and Tom’s Guide are useful as attributed third-party comparisons, but they should not be read as a shared ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare speed figures from different labs as though they came from the same test. NordVPN’s cited 2025 testing report is vendor-published and is not independent Linux-specific comparative evidence. The available material does not establish a common-condition speed test across these five services, so it cannot support a reliable fastest-to-slowest ranking.

GUI, CLI, or manual VPN setup?

  • Choose a GUI if you want to connect, switch servers, and manage settings through a desktop app. Confirm the app supports your distribution.
  • Choose a CLI client if you are comfortable managing connections in a terminal and want a provider-supported command-line workflow.
  • Choose manual setup if you want to use NetworkManager or configure OpenVPN/WireGuard directly. You may need to handle configuration files and connection settings yourself.

Linux distributions can support VPN protocols such as OpenVPN and WireGuard without a provider’s GUI, but the exact setup depends on the distro and provider instructions. NordVPN documents manual NetworkManager and OpenVPN steps; Proton documents manual OpenVPN and WireGuard configuration. A native app can simplify management, but it is not the only way to create a VPN connection.

Check these details before you subscribe

  • Your exact distribution and release: look for it in the provider’s official Linux documentation. A list naming Ubuntu or Debian does not automatically mean every derivative or release is officially supported.
  • Protocol in your chosen app: protocol support can differ between a GUI, CLI, and manual configuration. For example, a provider’s general protocol list should not be assumed to apply identically to every Linux mode.
  • Leak protection and kill switch: verify what the Linux client actually offers and how it behaves if the VPN connection drops.
  • Privacy assurances: distinguish provider claims from independent audits, and check the audit’s scope and date rather than treating the word “audited” as a blanket guarantee.
  • Streaming access: availability can change by service and location; no VPN can guarantee access to a particular catalogue.
  • Current plan terms: prices, refunds, device limits, and feature restrictions change. Check the provider’s current terms before buying.

Does Linux have a built-in VPN?

Linux can connect using supported VPN protocols through system networking tools, but that is different from having a subscription service or a provider’s full-featured app built in. Your distribution may expose VPN settings through NetworkManager, while manual configuration may require provider credentials and configuration details. If you want a simpler interface, choose a VPN with an app documented for your distro.

How to install a VPN on Linux

  1. Confirm compatibility. Open the provider’s official Linux page and verify your distribution and release are supported.
  2. Choose an installation path. Follow the provider’s GUI or CLI installation instructions, or select manual setup if you specifically want NetworkManager/OpenVPN/WireGuard configuration.
  3. Install from the documented source. Use the provider’s current instructions for your distro rather than copying commands intended for another package manager or release.
  4. Sign in or configure a connection. For a provider app, authenticate as directed. For manual setup, use the configuration files and credentials supplied for that protocol.
  5. Connect and verify. Check that the app or network settings show an active connection, then use the provider’s documented leak-protection checks if available. A connected status alone does not prove every traffic type is protected.
