For most people seeking a lightweight laptop in 2026, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is the strongest all-around candidate if macOS suits their work. Choose the Dell XPS 13 (2026) if you need Windows, and investigate the ASUS Zenbook A14 if keeping weight as low as possible matters most. These are evidence-based candidates, not a single comparable hands-on ranking: weigh each configuration, workload, ports and local price, and treat battery figures according to how they were measured.
Which lightweight laptop should you choose?
| Laptop | Best fit | What the available evidence says | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple MacBook Air 13-inch with M5 | People who want macOS and a portable general-purpose computer | Apple specifies a 13.6-inch display and claims up to 18 hours of battery life. TechRadar reports a 2.7 lb (1.24 kg) weight and 15 hours 30 minutes in its battery test. | TechRadar notes that it has no touchscreen and only two Thunderbolt ports. |
| Dell XPS 13 (2026) | People who want a compact Windows laptop | Dell lists 2.2 lb and 12.7 mm and claims up to 17 hours of streaming battery life. Tom’s Guide reports 14 hours 29 minutes of continuous web browsing in its test. | Tom’s Guide notes two USB-C ports and no headphone jack. |
| ASUS Zenbook A14 | People for whom minimum weight is a priority | ASUS describes it as under 1 kg and claims more than 32 hours of battery life. | Those figures are manufacturer claims; the cited sources do not provide an independent test result for this model. |
The figures come from different publishers and methods, so they do not establish which laptop lasts longest in the same conditions. Check the precise configuration sold in your region before comparing weight, price or battery performance.
How to choose the right lightweight laptop
Start with your operating system and software
Choose the operating system that supports the applications and workflow you actually need. The MacBook Air is the macOS candidate here; the XPS 13 is the Windows option. Confirm that any essential work, school, or specialist software runs on your chosen system before prioritizing a small difference in weight.

The MacBook Air M5 is offered with 13.6- and 15.3-inch displays, according to Apple. A larger screen can make multitasking and long work sessions more comfortable, but compare the weight of the exact size and configuration you intend to buy. For the A14, confirm the regional model’s screen and full specifications rather than assuming every product in ASUS’s thin-and-light lineup has identical details.

Check ports against your everyday devices
The cited MacBook Air review notes two Thunderbolt ports; the XPS 13 review notes two USB-C ports and no headphone jack. If you regularly connect external displays, storage, wired audio or other peripherals, check which ports the precise model provides and whether your existing cables work. A hub may be useful for some setups, but it is not automatically necessary.
Match memory, storage and price to the configuration
Do not compare a laptop by its family name alone. Verify the memory, storage, screen size and other configuration details for the exact model on sale, then compare its local price with alternatives that meet the same needs. Apple says M5 MacBook Air models start with 512GB of storage and can be configured with up to 4TB; availability and pricing may vary by market.
What the battery-life figures actually mean
Battery estimates are especially easy to misread. Manufacturer claims and reviewer measurements are not interchangeable, and even review results depend on the tested configuration, settings and workload. The cited figures are:

These results use different evidence types and, for the review figures, different test descriptions. They should not be read as a head-to-head battery ranking or as a promise of everyday runtime. If long unplugged sessions are central to your decision, look for a review of the exact configuration with a test method and workload similar to yours.

- Does the operating system support your essential software?
- Is the weight for the exact configuration acceptable, not just the advertised product family?
- Will the display size suit your work and travel habits?
- Are battery figures manufacturer claims or reviewer results, and do the test conditions resemble your use?
- Do the available ports support your peripherals without an inconvenient workaround?
- Does the configuration provide the memory and storage you need at a price available in your region?
