There is no Riot-published “best” spectator preset for watching professional League of Legends. The right setup depends first on where you are watching: an official esports broadcast, a live game in the League client, or a post-game replay. The minimap controls documented by Riot apply to in-client spectating; replay camera and timeline controls apply after a game. Neither set of controls should be assumed to change an official broadcast.

Choose settings for the way you are watching

Viewing mode Useful controls Best suited to
Official esports broadcast The broadcast’s own presentation; the cited client controls do not establish viewer control over tournament cameras or overlays. Watching the produced match feed.
Live in-client spectator mode Minimap position, transparency, border, and scale, as documented in Riot’s Patch 25.20 notes. Balancing map-wide awareness with a clear view of the action.
Post-game replay Select and lock a champion camera, use timeline landmarks, and pan with the middle mouse button, as described in Riot’s Replays FAQ & Pro-Tips. Following one player or revisiting a specific play.

Set up the in-client spectator minimap

Riot’s Patch 25.20 notes, published October 7, 2025, document four spectator minimap adjustments: move it by dragging its edges, change its transparency, toggle its border, and adjust its scale over a wider range. Riot does not prescribe a preferred size or opacity, so tune these to your display and viewing distance rather than treating a particular value as an official recommendation.

  • For map-wide awareness: make the minimap large and easy to read, with enough opacity to distinguish positions and terrain.
  • For a less obstructed view: reduce its scale or transparency, or turn off the border if it draws your eye.
  • For a comfortable layout: drag it to a position that does not compete with the action you are following.

These are spectator-interface controls, not evidence that a professional broadcast’s observer layout can be changed by viewers.

Follow a player or replay a fight

In a post-game replay, Riot’s Replay FAQ describes selecting a champion and locking the camera to that champion. This is the more direct approach when you want to track a particular player through a rotation or team fight. For a specific event, use the replay timeline and its landmarks to find the relevant moment; hold the middle mouse button to pan more smoothly.

These camera and timeline features concern replays. They are not a universal live spectator camera preset, and the FAQ’s controls may depend on the client version. For a player-input camera option, Riot’s separate Keyboard (WASD) Input FAQ says enabling WASD initially sets Dynamic Camera, which can be disabled in the Camera menu. That setting is about controlling a champion with WASD, not choosing the ideal camera for spectating.

Know what spectator delay figures mean

Riot’s Patch 14.1 notes, published January 9, 2024, list a spectator delay of 2 minutes 30 seconds for Summoner’s Rift, changed from 3 minutes, and 60 seconds for ARAM, TFT, and Arena. These are patch-note values for the modes named, not a guarantee of the delay on every later client version or tournament broadcast. The notes also describe a change to how far back a viewer can see after joining; they do not make the listed delay a viewer-selected setting.

Make a replay recording cleaner with League Director

For more deliberate replay staging and recording, Riot’s League Director repository documents playback and camera controls as well as toggles for HUD elements, health bars, and notifications. It is a separate replay tool, not a simple setting in the live spectator interface. The repository’s setup instructions specify Windows only and say very-high graphics settings are required for additional rendering features; those instructions may change as the tool evolves.

If the client is running poorly

Riot’s general low-FPS troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering graphics settings to improve frame rate, with a corresponding reduction in visual quality. This advice is general game troubleshooting, not a spectator-specific optimization. Test graphics changes in a custom game before relying on them for viewing.
