Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and 1Password are three practical LastPass alternatives to compare in 2026. Bitwarden is worth considering if you want a free starting point or published paid-plan pricing; Proton Pass if you value its documented import route and Proton ecosystem; and 1Password if you are willing to pay for a cross-platform service with family features. The right choice depends on your devices, sharing and recovery needs, and—if you are choosing for work—your organization’s identity, administration, and compliance requirements. The available evidence does not establish one objectively safest service for everyone.

Which LastPass alternative fits your needs?

Start with how the vault will be used, rather than a single “best” ranking. A personal user deciding between free and paid plans has different priorities from a family sharing access or an IT team managing employee credentials. The services below are candidates to evaluate, not a universal security ranking.

Service Could suit What the available sources establish What to check
Bitwarden People seeking a free starting point, lower-cost published paid plans, or a business option to evaluate. Bitwarden lists free, Premium, Families, Teams, and Enterprise options. Its comparison page describes end-to-end AES-256 encryption and business features including credential sharing, activity logs, directory synchronization, and SCIM provisioning. These are vendor statements. Bitwarden’s plan and alternatives page; Bitwarden’s LastPass comparison. Confirm the current plan limits, import compatibility, and whether its recovery and sharing options meet your needs.
Proton Pass People interested in Proton’s ecosystem or a documented route for importing passwords. Proton says it supports importing passwords from browsers and other password managers, and lists iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, a web app, and major-browser extensions. Proton describes its encryption as end-to-end. Proton Pass. Check whether the specific fields and record types you need are supported by the current importer.
1Password People prepared to pay for a cross-platform service and interested in family features. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review describes it as cross-platform and notes family plans, passkey support, security monitoring, and Travel Mode; the review also says it has no free version. These are that publication’s editorial assessments, not results of a hands-on test here. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review. Compare the current plan, price, and feature limits against your household’s requirements.
Dashlane, NordPass, Keeper, RoboForm, and others People who want a broader candidate list beyond the three options above. Security.org’s 2026 comparison evaluates these and other services and publishes its own ratings and starting prices. Those ratings are the publisher’s judgments, not a universal security measurement. Security.org’s 2026 comparison. Verify each vendor’s current regional plans, limits, and features directly before deciding.

What should individuals and families compare?

Before choosing, match the service to the way you actually use passwords and other vault records. A low headline price is not enough if the plan excludes a device, sharing feature, or recovery option your household depends on.

  • Devices and browsers: Check support for each phone, computer, and browser you use, and whether the plan limits devices.
  • Free-plan limits: If you want to stay free, verify the current limits on devices, vault items, and features rather than relying on the word “free.”
  • Migration fidelity: Confirm which logins, notes, identities, attachments, and shared records the importer can handle.
  • Authentication and passkeys: Compare multifactor-authentication support and passkey features where relevant.
  • Sharing and emergencies: Check secure sharing, family seats, emergency access, and recovery procedures.
  • Monitoring: Determine which monitoring features are included in the plan you would buy.
  • Total annual cost: Include family seats, add-ons, applicable taxes, and the plan’s billing period.

What should businesses evaluate?

For an organization, compare administrative controls and operating requirements separately from consumer plans. Bitwarden’s enterprise comparison identifies several relevant evaluation dimensions, including identity integrations, logs, deployment, and secrets management. Bitwarden’s enterprise comparison is a vendor resource, so validate its descriptions with each provider.

  • Permissions: Confirm role-based access and whether administrators can apply least-privilege controls.
  • Monitoring and response: Evaluate event logs, audit trails, and SIEM integration.

  • Scope and scale: Check secrets-management needs, support arrangements, and how price changes as seats grow.

Keep business comparisons distinct from personal or family pricing. An individual plan’s cost or feature set does not establish what an organization will pay or receive.

How to switch from LastPass without assuming a one-click transfer

Proton Pass documents a CSV export/import route and says it can import passwords from browsers or other password managers. That does not establish that every field, attachment, or shared record transfers intact, and the exact LastPass export steps and all destination-specific limits are not established here. Check the current instructions for both services before exporting.

  1. Inventory what you use. List the devices and browsers that need access, along with shared vaults and records beyond ordinary logins.
  2. Check compatibility first. Review the destination’s current import instructions and supported formats and fields. Proton Pass describes CSV export and import in its product information.
  3. Export through the official account workflow. Treat any plaintext export as sensitive: keep it in a protected temporary location and remove it once the migration is confirmed.
  4. Import and verify samples. Check logins, notes, identities, and shared records on each important device before relying on the new vault.
  5. Secure the new account. Enable multifactor authentication and review recovery and emergency-access settings. Update reused or exposed passwords as appropriate.
  6. Retain the old vault until checks are complete. Close the old account only after verifying the migration, following the provider’s current account instructions.

Can one of these services be called the most secure?

Not on the evidence available here. Bitwarden describes its implementation as end-to-end AES-256 encryption with salted hashing and PBKDF2 SHA-256; Proton says it uses end-to-end encryption. Those are vendor claims, not a like-for-like independent comparison of the shortlisted services. Bitwarden’s comparison; Proton Pass.

The numbers represent that publication’s ratings, not objective measurements that establish which service is safest. Security.org’s roundup. How to make the final choice

Choose two or three candidates that match your use case, then compare their current plans against the checklist that matters to you. For an individual or family, that usually means supported devices, import fidelity, sharing and recovery, and total annual cost. For a business, it means identity integration, permissions, logs, assurance, deployment, support, and cost at scale. Test migration with representative records and verify them before retiring access to LastPass.
