There is no verified live shortlist of the best laptops under £500 here: prices and stock change, and the available examples are not confirmed current deals. For a dependable buy, compare the exact UK configuration and its price on the day—especially its processor, 8GB of RAM, storage, screen and operating system—then make sure it supports the apps and work you need.
What a laptop under £500 can handle
A mainstream budget laptop can be a sensible fit for documents, web browsing, streaming and light multitasking. Which? says buyers may find Core i3 and sometimes Core i5 processors, SSD storage and Full HD screens in this price range. Its guidance is that 8GB of RAM is more likely than 4GB to avoid Windows slowdowns, as long as you do not overload the laptop with apps and browser tabs. Which?’s budget laptop guide also warns that sub-£500 Best Buy models are relatively uncommon.
Do not expect this budget to cover every demanding workload. HP says its sub-£500 range does not include new laptops with dedicated graphics for hardcore gaming or professional animation. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not an independent performance test; demanding games and professional creative work generally call for a larger budget or a suitable dedicated GPU. HP’s guide to laptops under £500 describes the trade-offs.

How to compare the exact configuration
A model name alone is not enough to judge value: laptops sold under the same family name can have different components. Check the full UK listing before buying.

| What to check | How it affects your choice |
|---|---|
| Processor | Compare the exact processor, not just a family label such as Core i3 or Ryzen 5. Which? says Core i3 and sometimes i5 models may appear below £500; that does not establish that every model in those families will suit your workload. |
| Memory | For Windows, treat 8GB as a useful minimum target based on Which?’s advice. A 4GB model is more likely to slow down when you have several apps or tabs open. |
| Storage | Check both the capacity and type. An SSD is preferable for a responsive everyday machine; some Chromebooks use eMMC storage. Choose enough internal space for the files and apps you keep locally. |
| Screen | Check the diagonal size and resolution. Full HD is a feature Which? says buyers may find in this bracket. A larger display can be more comfortable for extended sessions but less convenient to carry; a smaller laptop is easier to transport but may feel cramped. |
| Operating system | Choose Windows or ChromeOS based on the apps and offline tasks you actually need to do, not simply the purchase price. |
| Weight and portability | Compare the listed weight if you plan to carry the laptop regularly, alongside screen size and battery claims. Do not treat a manufacturer’s battery estimate as an independent test result. |
Windows or Chromebook: decide by software fit
A Chromebook can cost less and suit connected, cloud-oriented work, but ChromeOS is not a drop-in replacement for Windows. HP notes constraints involving app choice, editing software, offline use and internal storage. Before choosing one, confirm that your required apps run on ChromeOS and that your important tasks still work without an internet connection. If you rely on Windows-only software or a particular professional editing application, verify compatibility before paying.
Examples to investigate, not current recommendations
HP’s UK guide has named these models as under-£500 options: the HP 17-cp0031na with a 17.3-inch Full HD display, Ryzen 3 5300U, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD; the HP Pavilion 15-eg0032n with a 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen, 11th-generation Core i3, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD; and the HP 14s-fq1000na with a Full HD screen, Ryzen 5 5500U, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. The same page lists an HP Pavilion x360 14-dy0002na with Pentium Gold 7505, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD, plus an HP Chromebook 14a-na0005na with Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM and 128GB eMMC.

These are examples from a manufacturer page, not a verified October 2026 buying list. Current UK price, stock and the continued suitability of each configuration have not been established, so check the exact listing before treating any as a candidate. Tom’s Guide says the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x is worth considering if found below £500, but that conditional comment does not verify a UK listing at that price. Tom’s Guide’s laptop roundup places its central Windows and Chromebook picks in higher price bands.
Check price and stock before you buy
- Find the exact model code on a UK retailer listing, then confirm its processor, memory, storage, screen and operating system against the configuration you intend to buy.
- Check the live price and stock for that configuration immediately before purchase. Which? warns that prices fluctuate and that some prices can rise above £500.
- Compare listings from UK retailers such as Currys, John Lewis and Laptops Direct, but verify that each link refers to the same configuration rather than a similarly named laptop.
- Reconsider the purchase if the price exceeds your ceiling or a key detail—such as RAM, storage type or operating system—is unclear.
Deal coverage is not a substitute for a current listing: TechRadar’s cited under-£500 examples were tied to an Amazon Tech Week promotion on April 24, 2026, not verified October stock. TechRadar’s Amazon Tech Week laptop deals coverage should therefore be read as dated promotion context, not proof of today’s price or availability.

When to consider an external drive
If the laptop otherwise fits your needs but you need more space for files, an external hard drive is one option; HP suggests it as an alternative to prioritising a larger internal SSD. It adds a separate item to carry and connect, so choose it only if its extra capacity matters more than keeping everything on the laptop.
