As of August 16, 2026, the best laptops under $600 are not one universal model: the HP OmniBook 3 is the strongest Windows choice when the exact configuration has a modern Ryzen 5 or Core 5 processor, 8GB or 16GB RAM, and an SSD, while the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the better fit for cloud-first users.

Prices in this guide are US prices observed on August 16, 2026. Laptop prices, retailer inventory, coupons, student discounts, and configurations change quickly, so treat each recommendation as a specific configuration and price—not as a guarantee that every laptop in a product family is equally good.

Key takeaways

  • The HP OmniBook 3 is the best Windows deal when a Ryzen 5 or Core 5-class configuration with at least 8GB RAM and a 256GB or larger SSD costs $600 or less.
  • The ASUS Vivobook 14 X1407QA offers a portable Snapdragon X Windows option, but ARM compatibility should be checked before buying.
  • The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 and Acer Chromebook Plus 515 are better choices for browser-based work, Google services, streaming, and simple school tasks than for traditional Windows software.
  • 8GB RAM is the practical minimum for a Windows laptop in 2026; 16GB is preferable when it does not require sacrificing processor, display, or SSD quality.
  • A 256GB SSD is the minimum sensible Windows storage target, while 512GB is preferable for a primary computer; 128GB is restrictive but workable for basic use.

Which is the best laptop under $600 overall?

The best laptop under $600 overall depends on the operating system and the exact configuration. For Windows, choose an HP OmniBook 3 with a modern Ryzen 5 or Core 5-class processor, at least 8GB RAM, and a 256GB or larger SSD. For ChromeOS, choose the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 or Acer Chromebook Plus 515 if your work is primarily web-based.

The HP OmniBook 3 is the strongest general-purpose direction because the family includes substantially better configurations than the cheapest entry-level laptops. The most attractive reported deal was a 16-inch model with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 8GB RAM, a 1920×1200 display, and a 256GB SSD at $474. Another reported HP OmniBook 3 deal was $599.99, but those prices refer to different sale configurations.

HP does not sell one fixed OmniBook 3 specification. HP’s official OmniBook 3 specifications show processor, memory, storage, display, operating-system, and regional differences across models. Check the exact model number before buying, especially because an 8GB/128GB configuration is a materially different recommendation from a 16GB/512GB configuration.

What is the best Windows laptop under $600?

HP OmniBook 3: best Windows choice when the configuration is right

Buy it when: the exact model costs $600 or less and includes a Ryzen 5, Core 5, or comparable processor, at least 8GB RAM, and a 256GB or larger SSD. A 16GB/512GB version is the better long-term target if the price remains within budget.

The HP OmniBook 3 is suitable for Microsoft Office, browser multitasking, video calls, school portals, media playback, and ordinary remote-work tasks. A 1920×1200 16:10 display is preferable to a low-resolution panel because the extra vertical space helps with documents and web pages. HP lists 1920×1200 IPS, 2240×1400, and OLED options in the broader family, but the more desirable panels may not be included in the discounted SKU.

Skip or downgrade the recommendation when: the available model has only 8GB/128GB, a weak display, or an entry-level processor at nearly $600. At that point, compare the exact laptop with a Chromebook Plus model or wait for a better Windows sale.

HP’s Snapdragon-based OmniBook 3 models have their own specifications and should not be confused with Intel or AMD versions. HP’s Snapdragon OmniBook 3 documentation lists different processor, port, battery, weight, and Windows configuration details.

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i: best cheap Windows option

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i is the sensible low-price Windows fallback when a reported $389.99 configuration includes an Intel N150, 8GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch Full HD display. PCWorld reported that configuration at $389.99, but the deal may expire.

The N150 is an entry-level processor. The IdeaPad Slim 3i should handle documents, email, web research, streaming, and light video calls, but it is not the performance winner in this group. The 128GB SSD is the larger concern: Windows, recovery data, updates, applications, and personal files can consume that capacity quickly.

Buy the IdeaPad Slim 3i when the low price matters more than multitasking headroom and your files mostly live in cloud storage. Spend more on an HP OmniBook 3 or another Ryzen 5/Core 5-class Windows laptop when the computer will be your primary work machine.

What is the best portable Windows laptop under $600?

ASUS Vivobook 14 X1407QA: portable Snapdragon X option

The ASUS Vivobook 14 X1407QA is the most interesting portable Windows choice under $600 when the buyer is comfortable with Windows on ARM. ASUS lists Snapdragon X configurations, Windows 11, up to 16GB of onboard LPDDR5X memory, Wi-Fi 6E, USB4, HDMI 2.1, and a 14-inch display in its product comparisons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 16GB version is the one to seek for regular multitasking. ASUS also lists 8GB configurations, so do not assume that every Vivobook 14 X1407QA has the same memory. ASUS’s comparison page is the appropriate place to confirm the memory, display, ports, wireless standard, and operating system for the precise model.

Snapdragon X can be a good fit for browser work, Microsoft 365 web applications, email, streaming, and standard productivity. The qualification is important: ARM Windows can create compatibility problems with older x86 applications, specialist software, drivers, peripherals, some games, and utilities. Ask these questions before buying:

  • Does school or work require a legacy Windows application?
  • Does a printer, scanner, VPN, security tool, or other peripheral need a special driver?
  • Do you use virtual machines, older games, engineering software, or unusual business tools?
  • Must the laptop work reliably offline with locally installed software?

Choose an Intel or AMD Windows laptop instead when the answer to any of those questions is uncertain. Do not treat “Windows 11” as proof that every Windows application behaves identically on every processor architecture.

What is the best Chromebook under $600?

Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14: best Chromebook for most light users

The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the leading Chromebook direction for students and everyday users who mainly work in a browser. Current budget-laptop coverage places the model among the stronger affordable Chromebook options, and Tom’s Guide’s budget-laptop coverage treats Chromebook Plus as a more credible alternative to entry-level Windows laptops than older low-cost Chromebooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ChromeOS is well suited to Google Docs, Microsoft 365 web apps, email, streaming, browser-based school systems, video calls, and cloud storage. Chromebook Plus models can also support Android and Linux workloads where the exact device and software support them.

The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is not one fixed specification. Confirm the exact processor, RAM, storage, display, price, and ChromeOS Auto Update Expiration date before purchasing. The support date belongs to the specific model or SKU, not merely to the words “Chromebook Plus.”

Do not buy it if you need the Windows desktop versions of Adobe applications, specialist accounting or engineering tools, traditional Windows games, proprietary work software, or a school system that requires an incompatible local application. Microsoft Office can work through the web on a Chromebook, but browser-based Microsoft 365 is not the same thing as the full Windows desktop Office suite.

Acer Chromebook Plus 515: best large-screen Chromebook

The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is the better Chromebook choice for buyers who want a 15.6-inch workspace for school documents, split-screen browsing, streaming, and home use. WIRED’s cheap-laptop coverage identifies the Chromebook Plus 515 as one of the stronger inexpensive Chromebook options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seek a configuration with at least 8GB RAM, a 1920×1080-class display, and enough local storage for downloaded files. Some inexpensive Chromebook variants use small eMMC storage. eMMC is not automatically unusable on ChromeOS, where cloud storage is central, but limited capacity becomes frustrating if you keep many offline files, Android apps, photos, or downloaded media.

Full port selection includes 1 USB Type-C 5Gbps, 2 USB Type-A 5Gbps, HDMI 1.4b, headphone/microphone combo jack, SD media card reader, and AC Smart pin. HP True Vision 720p HD camera with dual array digital microphones enables crystal-clear video conferencing for remote work and online learning.
  • Ultra-Portable Design with Extended Battery Life: Weighing just 3.24 lbs with a slim 0.71-inch profile, this laptop fits easily into backpacks and bags for on-the-go productivity. Up to 12 hours of video playback or 7 hours 45 minutes of wireless streaming battery life, keeping you productive throughout the day. Includes 45W AC power adapter. Snow white finish with vertical brushing pattern on keyboard deck and full-size snow white keyboard for comfortable typing.

The 15.6-inch screen improves workspace but reduces portability compared with a 14-inch model. The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is a good home-and-school laptop, not the best choice for frequent travel or a buyer who values compact size above screen area.

ASUS Chromebook Plus CX14 or CX15: flexible Chromebook alternative

Choose the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX14 for greater portability or the CX15 for a larger workspace. ASUS’s cited comparison pages show ChromeOS configurations with 8GB memory, Wi-Fi 6, Full HD displays in 14-inch or 15.6-inch sizes, and a Titan C security chip.

ASUS’s CX14/CX15 comparison should be checked against the retailer’s exact model number because ASUS also sells non-Plus Chromebook models with weaker processors or less memory. The “Plus” designation matters more than the family name alone, but even a Plus Chromebook remains a ChromeOS device with ChromeOS software limits.

Windows or Chromebook: which should you buy?

Choose Windows when software compatibility matters more than simplicity. Choose a Chromebook when your work is primarily online and you want a low-maintenance computer.

Choose Windows if you need Choose Chromebook if you mainly need
Desktop Microsoft Office, Adobe software, specialist school or work applications, engineering or accounting programs Google Docs, Microsoft 365 web apps, email, streaming, and browser-based school systems
Broad printer, scanner, VPN, accessory, and peripheral compatibility Fast startup, automatic cloud-centered workflows, and simple administration
PC gaming beyond browser or Android games Web applications, supported Android apps, and selected Linux applications
More dependable offline use with locally installed programs and files A child’s or student’s primarily online school computer

Chromebook compatibility warning

A Chromebook is not simply a cheaper Windows laptop. A Chromebook may not run desktop Windows applications, certain printers, specialized software, or school and workplace systems that require local Windows components. Confirm the required applications before buying.

How much RAM and storage should a $600 laptop have?

For Windows, treat 8GB RAM as the practical minimum and 16GB as the preferred target. Eight gigabytes is adequate for documents, ordinary browser work, streaming, and moderate multitasking, but many browser tabs, video calls, local photo editing, and creative applications reduce the available margin.

For Chromebooks, 8GB is usually a sensible target for a primary device, although ChromeOS workloads differ from Windows workloads. Memory is often soldered or otherwise non-upgradable in thin laptops and Chromebooks, so select the desired capacity when buying. HP’s OmniBook 3 specifications show memory options from 8GB to 32GB depending on the processor family, while ASUS distinguishes 8GB and 16GB onboard Vivobook 14 configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capacity Windows recommendation Chromebook recommendation
4GB RAM Avoid for a primary Windows laptop Only consider for very light, temporary use if the price is exceptionally low
8GB RAM Practical minimum for school and office work Good target for browser work and moderate multitasking
16GB RAM Preferred for heavier multitasking and longer useful life Helpful but not always necessary for basic cloud work

A 256GB SSD is the minimum sensible Windows storage target, and 512GB is preferable for a primary Windows laptop. A 128GB SSD can work for basic tasks, but it leaves less room for Windows updates, applications, photos, and downloaded files. A 64GB or 128GB eMMC drive is more acceptable in a cloud-first Chromebook than in a primary Windows laptop.

Advertised storage is not the same as free storage. Windows, recovery partitions, updates, and installed applications consume part of the advertised capacity. Before choosing a 128GB model, check whether storage is upgradeable, whether the laptop has an accessible M.2 slot, or whether you are comfortable using cloud or external USB storage.

What processor should a laptop under $600 have?

Prioritize a modern AMD Ryzen 5-class or Intel Core 5/Core Ultra 5-class processor for a Windows laptop when the price allows. Snapdragon X is also a compelling option when the workload is ARM-compatible. For Chromebooks, a current Chromebook Plus model with a modern Core i3, Intel N-series, or comparable processor can be suitable when RAM, display, and storage are also reasonable.

Intel N-series processors are not automatically bad, but they are entry-level chips intended for basic workloads. The Intel N150 in the reported Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i deal is appropriate for a low-cost basic Windows computer, not a reason to expect workstation-like multitasking. Older Celeron and Pentium processors can be acceptable for simple ChromeOS use but are poor choices for demanding Windows multitasking.

Do not choose a laptop solely because the product page advertises a high core count or an “AI PC” label. An NPU or Copilot+ category does not automatically make browsing, Office work, or school tasks faster. Judge the complete configuration: processor, RAM, SSD, display, operating system, and price.

What display is acceptable under $600?

Seek a 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 display, preferably an IPS panel with a matte or anti-glare finish. A 16:10 1920×1200 screen is particularly useful for documents and web pages because it provides more vertical workspace than 16:9.

Brightness matters as much as resolution. Approximately 300 nits is a useful target when available, especially for rooms with windows or overhead lighting. Budget laptops can still use dim, reflective, narrow-gamut panels even when the screen is 15.6 inches and Full HD. Do not infer color accuracy from resolution alone.

HP’s broader OmniBook 3 specifications include 1920×1200 IPS, 2240×1400, and OLED options, but a sale-priced model may use a different panel. Check HP’s official panel options and compare them with the exact retailer listing rather than assuming the product family includes the best screen.

Can a laptop under $600 run games?

A typical new productivity laptop under $600 is not a good choice for modern AAA gaming. Integrated graphics can handle browser games, indie games, older games, and some esports titles at reduced settings, but gaming performance depends on the exact processor, graphics architecture, resolution, and game.

A dedicated-GPU gaming laptop below $600 usually represents an unusually deep sale, refurbished stock, older hardware, or significant compromises in display, battery, cooling, and build quality. TechRadar’s affordable gaming-laptop coverage treats inexpensive gaming laptops as a separate category from ordinary sub-$600 school and productivity models.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Match the exact model number. Confirm the processor, RAM, storage, display resolution, operating system, touch support, and ports on the retailer page.
  2. Check the real price. Record whether the price requires a coupon, membership, student status, trade-in, or open-box condition. Tax and shipping may also affect the final total.
  3. Avoid 4GB Windows laptops. Choose at least 8GB RAM, with 16GB preferred when the rest of the configuration remains strong.
  4. Prefer SSD storage. Choose at least 256GB for Windows and be cautious with 128GB SSDs or 64GB/128GB eMMC drives.
  5. Inspect the screen. Seek 1920×1080 or 1920×1200, IPS, anti-glare treatment, and reasonable brightness.
  6. Check upgradeability. RAM is often onboard, and storage may be inaccessible or limited to one slot.
  7. Confirm software compatibility. Check Windows versus ChromeOS, and verify ARM compatibility for Snapdragon Windows laptops.
  8. Review warranty and returns. A low price is less attractive if the return window, warranty, or seller reputation is poor.
  9. Check Chromebook support. Verify the exact model’s ChromeOS Auto Update Expiration date on Google’s official Chromebook support page before purchase.

What happens when the sale price changes?

A laptop advertised at $599.99 may exceed the $600 limit when a promotion ends, while a normally expensive laptop may temporarily qualify during a sale. The safest buying rule is to record the exact configuration, retailer, price date, and discount condition beside every recommendation.

Buy the HP OmniBook 3 at or below $600 when it has a Ryzen 5 or Core 5-class processor, 8GB or 16GB RAM, and at least a 256GB SSD. Treat $500 or less as a particularly strong deal for the better configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i below $400 only if basic Windows work is enough and 128GB storage is acceptable. Skip it when heavy multitasking or local file storage is important.

Best Value

Buy a Chromebook Plus when the exact model has 8GB RAM, a suitable display, sufficient storage, and a confirmed support date. Choose ChromeOS only after checking software compatibility.

Use a fallback if a deal expires. A Chromebook Plus CX14 or CX15 can replace a cheap Windows laptop for browser-based work, while a better Ryzen 5/Core 5 Windows model is worth waiting for when desktop software is required.

Should you buy refurbished instead?

A refurbished business laptop can offer stronger performance and build quality than a new $400 consumer laptop, but refurbished buying adds uncertainty. Check battery health, cosmetic condition, included accessories, seller warranty, return policy, and the age of the processor platform.

Keep refurbished options separate from new-laptop rankings. A refurbished model may be the better value for a buyer who accepts an older CPU and shorter battery life, but it should not be compared with a new laptop as though warranty, condition, and availability were identical.

How were these picks selected?

These recommendations combine current independent buying coverage, official manufacturer specifications, and US price checks available in the August 16, 2026 research snapshot. The article does not claim original hands-on testing or independent battery measurements.

Battery-life claims require particular caution. HP explains that battery performance varies with configuration, applications, power management, wireless use, temperature, and other conditions. HP’s battery-performance notes should be treated as manufacturer context, not as a measured result for every OmniBook 3 model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $600 enough for a good laptop in 2026?

Yes, $600 is enough for a useful Windows laptop or Chromebook in 2026, but the exact configuration matters. Seek at least 8GB RAM, an SSD, and a 1920×1080-class display; for Windows, a 256GB SSD is the minimum sensible target and 512GB is preferable.

Is 8GB RAM enough for a laptop under $600?

8GB RAM is the practical minimum for Windows school, office, browser, and video-call work, while 16GB is preferable for heavier multitasking. Memory is often onboard and non-upgradable, so choose the desired capacity at purchase.

Can a Chromebook run Microsoft Office?

A Chromebook can run Microsoft 365 through web applications, but ChromeOS does not provide the same full desktop Windows Office experience. Check whether your school or employer requires locally installed Windows applications before buying a Chromebook.

Are Snapdragon Windows laptops compatible with normal Windows apps?

Snapdragon Windows laptops can run many everyday Windows workloads, but ARM compatibility is not universal. Older x86 applications, specialist drivers, peripherals, utilities, games, and security tools may require checking before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a 128GB SSD enough for a Windows laptop?

A 128GB SSD is usable for basic Windows work but restrictive because Windows, recovery data, updates, applications, and personal files consume capacity. Choose 256GB at minimum and 512GB when the laptop will be your primary computer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the exact HP OmniBook 3 configuration when a Ryzen 5 or Core 5-class model with at least 8GB RAM, a 256GB or larger SSD, and a good Full HD or 1920×1200 display is available for $600 or less.
