If you want a color e-reader that can also read EPUB files and borrow some library books, the Kobo Libra Colour is the clearest documented alternative in this group. Its OverDrive library access depends on your country and library, and not every Libby ebook works on Kobo, so check your library’s catalog before buying. BOOX and PocketBook also make color e-readers, but the information available here does not verify their compatibility with particular library services or models.

How to choose a Kindle alternative

Start with where you get your books. A reader who mainly buys from one store has different needs from someone who borrows ebooks or transfers personal files. Then decide whether color is important: color e-ink can display covers and illustrations in color, but the Kobo Libra Colour’s stated resolution is lower for color than for black-and-white content. Finally, consider practical features such as page-turn buttons and the steps needed to transfer protected files.

  • Library borrowing: Confirm that your country, library, and the titles you want are supported. A device’s connection to a library service does not guarantee access to every ebook in that service.
  • Personal files and other stores: Check both the file format and its digital-rights protection. Supporting EPUB does not mean a device will open every purchased or borrowed EPUB without additional software or transfer steps.
  • Color: Consider whether color illustrations or covers matter enough to accept the device’s lower stated color resolution compared with its black-and-white resolution.

Display and reading features

Kobo specifies a 7-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 display, with 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. It has page-turn buttons. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s stated display resolution, not an independent assessment of image quality.

Formats and file transfers

Kobo’s current US product page lists native support for EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, image and text formats, and CBZ/CBR comics. Format support and DRM support are separate: Kobo says Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files require Adobe Digital Editions for transfer. Its Google Drive instructions describe adding non-protected EPUB or PDF files to supported models, including Libra Colour. Check the instructions for the file source you use rather than assuming every EPUB can be copied directly.

Library borrowing has limits

Kobo says OverDrive is available only in select countries, and availability varies by library. Libby also warns that not all Libby ebooks are compatible with Kobo. Before choosing the device for library borrowing, check that your library participates in the relevant service and search for the titles you actually plan to borrow.

Battery estimate

Kobo’s estimate of up to 40 days is based on reading for 30 minutes per day with the front light at 30% and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off. It is a conditional manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for other settings or reading habits.

When to investigate BOOX or PocketBook

BOOX Go Color 7 and PocketBook Verse Pro Colour are additional color-reader models to consider, but the available primary documentation does not establish model-specific compatibility with Libby or another particular library service. Treat them as candidates to research, not as verified substitutes for Kobo’s documented OverDrive integration. Before buying, confirm the exact model’s current features, regional availability, file-transfer requirements, and support for your library’s lending method.

Check these details before you buy

  1. Ask your public library which ebook-borrowing service it uses and whether it supports the device or app you are considering.
  2. Search the library catalog for a few titles you expect to borrow, then verify whether those titles are compatible with the reader.
  3. Identify the file formats and DRM used by books you already own or buy elsewhere. For Kobo, Adobe DRM-protected EPUB and PDF transfers require Adobe Digital Editions; non-protected EPUB and PDF files can be added to supported models using supported methods.
  4. Confirm local device availability and service support for your country. Kobo’s US product listing and its select-country OverDrive availability do not establish identical features in every region.
  5. Choose color only if it serves your reading: on Libra Colour, the stated color resolution is 150 ppi, compared with 300 ppi for black-and-white content.
