If you want to manage a child’s iPhone, start with Apple’s built-in Screen Time and Family Sharing controls. For additional tools, Qustodio, Bark, OurPact, Mobicip and Norton Family describe iPhone or iOS support, but their features differ—and the available evidence does not support ranking ten apps or promising that any of them can secretly read everything on a phone.
This is a guide to transparent, parent-managed controls, not covert surveillance. Apple’s platform sets boundaries on what third-party apps can do. Check current compatibility, setup requirements and feature coverage with Apple and each vendor before subscribing.
What an iPhone monitoring app can realistically do
“Monitoring” can mean several different things: setting screen-time limits, controlling access to apps, filtering content, seeing a location, or receiving an alert about a potential risk. Those functions are not interchangeable. A product may offer alerts without letting a parent control every app, or provide app controls without access to every message.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s Screen Time frameworks also place platform-level limits on third-party parental-control features. Apple Developer Documentation says: “Add the Family Controls entitlement to enable parental control features in your app and its Screen Time API app extensions.” That statement describes an entitlement needed for relevant app features; it is not a promise that any particular service can access all activity on a device.

None of the sources covered here establishes that an ordinary iPhone app can secretly access all messages, calls or activity on another person’s phone. Choose tools for a child’s device with appropriate parent or guardian authorization, explain what is being managed, and avoid installing monitoring software on another adult’s device without their consent.
Start with Apple Screen Time and Family Sharing
Apple describes parental controls managed by a parent or guardian through Family Sharing. Its controls cover such areas as app use and access to content and settings. Screen Time is the sensible built-in baseline before adding a separate subscription: it avoids introducing another vendor account simply to explore Apple’s own controls.
The exact controls and setup depend on the devices, family configuration and software versions involved. Apple’s support guidance, “Set up parental controls to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad,” is the appropriate place to confirm the current setup steps and available controls for your family. The documentation considered for this guide does not establish one universal set of controls across every iOS release.

iPhone parental-control options at a glance
The table summarizes what the named sources say, not independent test results. “Not stated” means the cited material does not establish the detail; it does not mean the service lacks the feature.

|---|---|---|
| Apple Screen Time / Family Sharing | Apple describes parent-managed controls for a child’s device, including app-use and content controls. What to know about each third-party option
Qustodio: check the iOS-specific feature details
Qustodio markets iPhone and iPad support, application rules and activity insights. Its iPhone and iPad help material treats calls and messages monitoring as a separate iOS setup topic, so do not assume that every feature in a general product list works the same way on an iPhone. Confirm the supported iOS version, setup steps and plan coverage directly with Qustodio.
Bark: alerts with a device-specific sync workflow
Bark describes an iOS setup in which Bark Sync scans a child’s device when it is plugged into the Bark Sync charger, and the service sends alerts for potential dangers. This is a particular workflow, not evidence of invisible or continuous access to everything on the device. Ask Bark what data and apps its current iOS setup covers and how often a device must be connected.

OurPact: app controls and time allowances are vendor-described
OurPact says its iOS offering includes individual app control, messaging access management and screen-time allowances. Those are vendor claims, not independently tested results in the sources available here. Verify current device compatibility and exactly what “messaging access management” means in the configuration you would use.

Why this is not a verified “10 best” ranking
A 2025 peer-reviewed study, “My Data or Our Data? A Comparative Study of Collaborative Family Apps and Parents’ Experiences with Apple’s Family Sharing,” names a set of apps that includes Apple Family Sharing, Bark Premium, Qustodio, Norton Family, OurPact, Mobicip, Aura, Kaspersky Safe Kids, Net Nanny, FamiSafe, Canopy and MMGuardian. That is a list of apps included in a study, not a current ranking of the ten best iPhone monitoring apps or proof that each has comparable iOS features today.
The vendor pages summarized above make different kinds of claims. They do not provide a like-for-like, independently tested comparison of iOS versions, covered apps and activity, alerts versus controls, setup burden, plan requirements, privacy practices and regional availability. A numerical “best” ranking would imply evidence that is not established here. Use the shortlist as a set of options to investigate, not as a winner list.
Apple also announced expanded child-safety tools on June 11, 2025, including frameworks for developers building parental-control experiences with Device Activity, Managed Settings and Family Controls. That announcement described plans at the time; it should not be treated as confirmation of a feature’s present availability. Check current Apple documentation and release information for the software version you use.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right option for your family
- Write down the job you need done. Decide whether you need time limits, app controls, content restrictions, location alerts or risk alerts. Do not treat “monitoring” as a guarantee of access to calls, messages or every app.
- Check iOS compatibility and setup. Confirm the current supported iOS versions and the steps required on the child’s device. Ask whether setup requires Family Sharing, a vendor account, a computer, account access or—in Bark’s described workflow—the Bark Sync charger.
- Match the feature to the coverage. Find out which apps and activity types are covered, whether the tool sends alerts or can change device settings, and whether coverage differs between iOS and other platforms.
- Confirm plan and region details. The cited material does not establish current pricing, plan-by-plan feature availability or regional availability for these services. Check those details directly before subscribing.
- Review privacy and data handling. Look for the vendor’s current explanation of what it collects, who can see it, how long it is retained and how to delete it. Those practices are not established by the product descriptions summarized here.
- Explain the arrangement to the child. Set expectations about which controls are enabled and what alerts may be sent. A clear, proportionate setup is more useful than implying that an app provides unrestricted or secret access.
Common expectations to correct before installing an app
- “It can read everything on an iPhone.” The cited sources do not support that promise. iOS features are bounded by Apple’s platform controls, and services describe different coverage.
- “A feature on the product page must work on iOS.” Not necessarily. Check the iPhone-specific help page and setup instructions, especially for calls, messages and activity insights.
- “Supported on iOS means feature parity.” A platform listing does not establish that every advertised function is available on iPhone.
- “An app ranking proves which one is best.” A study’s list of included products is not a current comparative ranking. The sources summarized here are insufficient to rank ten services fairly.
