For most people who want a conventional iPhone with the most camera flexibility, the iPhone 18 Pro is the strongest fit on Apple’s published specifications. The iPhone 17 is a more affordable all-rounder, while the 17e is the least expensive current option in Apple’s U.S. store. Choose the iPhone Air for its thin, light design or the iPhone Duo if you specifically want a foldable screen. The right pick depends on what you value most: camera controls, price, size, or a different form factor. This guide compares Apple’s current U.S. choices as of October 7, 2026; prices, availability, and features can differ in other markets.

2026 iPhone models at a glance

Apple’s current U.S. shop listing and announcements surface five main choices: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, and iPhone 17e. The prices below are Apple’s listed U.S. starting prices, not retailer or carrier quotes. Battery life is Apple’s video-playback estimate, not a promise of everyday runtime.

Model U.S. starting price Standout features Best fit
iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max $1,199 / $1,299 A20 Pro; 48MP main camera with variable aperture, plus 48MP Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras; manual Camera app controls. Apple lists up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only Pro and up to 45 hours for the eSIM-only Pro Max. Camera flexibility and Pro performance; choose Pro Max if you want the larger Pro option.
iPhone Duo $1,999 A20 Pro; foldable 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer display. Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. People who specifically want a foldable iPhone and can wait for its release.
iPhone Air $1,099 6.5-inch display, A19 Pro, titanium frame, one 48MP Fusion rear camera; Apple lists up to 27 hours of video playback. People for whom a thin, light design is the main priority.
iPhone 17 $899 6.3-inch display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, A19, two 48MP rear cameras; Apple lists up to 30 hours of video playback. A lower-priced general-purpose choice with a high-refresh-rate screen and dual rear cameras.
iPhone 17e $699 6.1-inch display, A19, one 48MP Fusion camera; Apple lists up to 26 hours of video playback. People prioritizing the lowest listed price among these current models.

Apple’s battery figures are manufacturer estimates based on specified tests, not independent measurements. Actual battery life varies with use, configuration, network, and other factors. The Pro and Pro Max figures above specifically apply to the eSIM-only versions.

Which iPhone should you buy?

Choose iPhone 18 Pro for camera control and flagship features

The iPhone 18 Pro stands out if you want more control over how photos and videos are captured. Its main camera has a variable aperture, and Apple says the Camera app includes manual controls such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. Those features are most useful if you expect to adjust settings deliberately; they are not a reason to pay extra if you mainly point, shoot, and share.

Apple lists the Pro at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299 in the U.S. The Pro Max is the larger of the two Pro choices and has the higher listed video-playback estimate. The evidence here does not establish an independent camera or battery ranking against the other phones, so treat this as a choice based on Apple’s published specifications rather than a hands-on verdict.

Choose iPhone 17 for a balanced lower-cost option

At Apple’s U.S. listed starting price of $899, iPhone 17 costs less than the Air and Pro models while retaining a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion up to 120Hz and two 48MP rear cameras. It is the practical middle ground if you want a conventional iPhone with a high-refresh-rate display and more than one rear-camera perspective, without choosing the least expensive feature set.

Choose iPhone 17e if price matters most

The 17e has the lowest listed U.S. starting price in this group, $699. Its published feature set includes a 6.1-inch display and one 48MP Fusion rear camera. Compared with iPhone 17, it gives up the listed second rear camera and ProMotion display. Pick it if those differences matter less to you than keeping the starting price down.

Choose iPhone Air for a thin, light design

Apple positions the Air around its thin, light design, with a titanium frame and 6.5-inch display. Its starting price is $1,099, and its listed rear-camera setup is one 48MP Fusion camera. That makes the Air a design-led choice rather than the obvious value choice: consider whether the form factor is worth the premium over iPhone 17, especially if camera versatility or battery life is important to you.

Choose iPhone Duo only if you want a foldable iPhone

The Duo is not simply a larger standard iPhone: it opens into a 7.6-inch inner display and also has a 5.4-inch outer display. It starts at $1,999 in the U.S. Apple says preorders begin October 16, 2026, with availability scheduled for October 23. As of October 7, it is announced but not yet available to buy. If you need a phone immediately, choose among models already listed for sale instead.

  1. Do you need to buy now? If yes, rule out iPhone Duo for now: Apple’s announced preorder and availability dates are October 16 and October 23, 2026, respectively.
  2. Is a foldable screen the point of the upgrade? If yes, Duo is the only foldable choice in this group. If not, compare the conventional models.
  3. Is camera control more important than price? Look at iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max for the variable-aperture main camera and manual Camera app controls. If you want two rear cameras without paying Pro prices, consider iPhone 17.
  4. Is a high-refresh-rate screen a priority? Apple specifically lists ProMotion up to 120Hz for iPhone 17. Do not assume a specification for another model based on this comparison alone.
  5. Is thinness and lightness your deciding factor? Consider Air, then weigh its single rear camera and $1,099 starting price against what you would gain from a different model.
  6. Is minimizing the listed purchase price the priority? Start with iPhone 17e at $699, then decide whether the 17’s second rear camera and ProMotion display are worth its higher $899 starting price.

Check before ordering

  • Confirm local pricing and availability. The prices in this article are Apple’s U.S. starting prices as listed on October 7, 2026. Storage, retailer discounts, carrier terms, and prices outside the U.S. may differ.
  • Compare the exact configuration. Starting prices do not establish the price of every storage tier or carrier arrangement. Check the selected model, storage, and whether it is carrier-locked before purchase.
  • Treat battery numbers as test estimates. Apple’s stated video-playback hours are not a guarantee of screen-on time or a full day of use. For Duo, Apple gives separate estimates for viewing on its inner and outer displays.
  • Check timing for Duo accessories too. Apple announced a $79 U.S. iPhone Duo Case and a $129 U.S. Folio with Kickstand, with ordering also beginning October 16, 2026. These are announced prices and dates, not confirmation of current stock.

Verdict

For camera controls and Pro-class specifications in a conventional phone, start with iPhone 18 Pro; choose the Pro Max if you prefer the larger Pro option. For a lower-cost all-rounder, iPhone 17 offers a useful mix of display and camera features, while 17e is the straightforward price-first pick. Air is for buyers drawn to its thin, light design, and Duo is for those who specifically want a foldable iPhone and are willing to wait until its announced release.
