iPhone data recovery software for Mac and Windows works best when a usable copy exists in Recently Deleted, iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices, iTunes, or a third-party app backup. Start with Apple’s free recovery tools. Choose iMazing for local-backup extraction and management, or consider Dr.Fone, PhoneRescue, or EaseUS MobiSaver for broader recovery attempts—but no reputable program can guarantee recovery from a securely erased, encrypted, locked iPhone with no backup.

The important question is not simply which program has the longest feature list. The important question is where the missing photo, message, contact, note, WhatsApp conversation, or other data may still exist. A backup extractor can be highly useful when an older backup survives, yet largely irrelevant when the data was permanently deleted from a modern iPhone and never copied elsewhere.

Key takeaways

  • Apple Photos, Messages, iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes are the safest free recovery options and should be checked before paying for software.
  • iMazing is the best overall choice for inspecting, preserving, and selectively exporting data from local iPhone backups on Mac or Windows.
  • Dr.Fone is the broadest all-in-one option because its product family combines an iOS recovery module with repair, transfer, and other phone utilities.
  • PhoneRescue and EaseUS MobiSaver advertise recovery from iPhones, computer backups, and iCloud-related sources, but advertised source support is not proof of successful recovery on every iOS version.
  • Modern iPhone security means permanently deleted data may be unrecoverable when no Recently Deleted copy, cloud copy, app copy, or computer backup exists.

What is the best iPhone data recovery software for Mac and Windows in 2026?

iMazing is the best overall choice when the recoverable data is already in a local Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes backup, or when the user wants better backup management for the future. Dr.Fone is the better fit for someone who also wants repair and transfer utilities. PhoneRescue and EaseUS MobiSaver are reasonable recovery attempts when their free scans or previews show the required data. Apple’s own tools remain the best first choice for recently deleted Photos and Messages.

Reader situation Best first option Why Main limitation
Recently deleted messages Messages Recently Deleted Free, official, and designed for supported recent deletions Apple says the feature requires iOS 16 or later and generally covers 30–40 days
Recently deleted photos or videos Photos Recently Deleted Native recovery avoids third-party access to private data Recovery depends on the item still being in Recently Deleted
Existing Mac or Windows backup iMazing Can inspect local backups and selectively export accessible data It relies on local backups for many data types and does not currently work with iCloud backups
Recovery plus repair and transfer Dr.Fone Offers a broader toolkit than a focused backup extractor Modules, prices, and erase risks differ; recovery is not the same as repair
Several possible recovery sources PhoneRescue or EaseUS MobiSaver Both vendors advertise device, computer-backup, and cloud-related recovery paths Results depend on device access, iOS version, backup state, encryption, and the data type
Deleted files on a Mac, PC, drive, or SD card Disk Drill, Stellar, or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard These products are primarily computer-storage recovery tools Desktop-drive recovery features should not be treated as proof of iPhone undelete capability
Locked, damaged, or non-booting iPhone with no backup Professional recovery or board-repair service Hardware and cryptographic problems may exceed consumer software There may be no recoverable copy, especially after secure erase or storage failure

What does “iPhone data recovery software” actually mean?

iPhone data recovery software describes several different product categories, and those categories do not perform the same operation. “Recover” may mean extracting one conversation from a backup, restoring an entire phone from an older snapshot, attempting a direct device scan, repairing iOS so the phone boots, or transferring data to another device.

Apple’s native recovery tools

Apple’s free options include Photos Recently Deleted, Messages Recently Deleted, iCloud-synced services, iCloud Backup, Finder backups on macOS, and Apple Devices or iTunes backups on Windows. Apple’s official restore instructions cover restoring from iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes where applicable.

Native recovery should come first because Apple controls the operating system and the process does not require giving a third-party vendor access to private messages, health data, photos, or local backups. Full-backup restoration has a significant trade-off: Apple says an already configured iPhone must be erased before restoring an iCloud backup through the setup process.

Backup extractors and iPhone managers

Backup extractors read an accessible local backup, or create a new local backup, and let the user preview or export selected items. iMazing is the clearest example. Some features in Dr.Fone, PhoneRescue, and EaseUS MobiSaver also fit this category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup extractor cannot recover information that was never present in the backup it reads. A preview of a database record also does not necessarily prove that a complete attachment, video, conversation, or app database can be exported.

Deleted-data recovery tools

Deleted-data tools advertise scans of a connected iPhone, Finder or iTunes backups, iCloud-related data, and app data. Vendor claims should be treated as advertised capabilities rather than guaranteed results. A credible recovery test would state the iPhone model, iOS version, passcode and trust status, sync settings, backup condition, product build, and whether the result was merely found, previewed, or successfully exported.

iOS repair and unlocking tools

Repair tools address boot loops, recovery mode, black screens, or other system problems. Repair is not automatically data recovery. A data-preserving repair mode may differ from an advanced restore, firmware reinstall, passcode-removal process, or Activation Lock feature that can erase data or cannot legitimately bypass Apple’s protections.

What should you try before buying recovery software?

Check Apple’s free recovery locations before installing any third-party program. The following order reduces the chance of overwriting a useful backup or making a destructive restore before the data is preserved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop using the iPhone. Avoid taking photos, recording video, installing apps, updating iOS, resetting the phone, or repeatedly attempting repairs when deletion was recent.
  2. Check Photos Recently Deleted. Open Photos and inspect the Recently Deleted album. Recover the item there before trying a scanner.
  3. Check Messages Recently Deleted. Open Messages, tap Edit on newer iOS versions, or use Filters on versions that show that control, tap Show Recently Deleted, select the conversation or messages, and tap Recover. Apple says the feature requires iOS 16 or later and generally covers messages deleted within the last 30–40 days; see Apple’s deleted-message recovery instructions.
  4. Check synced services. Look in iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Notes, Contacts, Calendars, and the relevant app’s own cloud service. A synced deletion may also synchronize to other devices, so do not assume that iCloud sync is an historical archive.
  5. Find existing computer backups. Check Finder on a Mac and Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. Preserve older backups before creating or restoring anything.
  6. Make a new local backup when appropriate. A new backup can preserve the phone’s current state, but it may not recreate the deleted data and should not replace the only older backup. Copy older backup folders before experimenting.
  7. Use encryption when creating a local backup. Apple says Health, Activity, and Keychain data require an encrypted computer backup. The encrypted-backup password is essential for reading protected content.
  8. Work from a copy wherever possible. Scan a copied backup rather than modifying the original. Preview the actual required item before paying.
  9. Export to a different location. Save recovered photos, messages, contacts, or documents to another drive or folder, not only back to the same iPhone.

How do iCloud sync and iCloud Backup differ?

iCloud sync keeps selected data current across devices, while iCloud Backup is a periodic snapshot of information that is not already being synced to iCloud. The distinction determines whether a recovery program can find an older version.

Storage method What it does Recovery implication
iCloud sync Keeps services such as Photos or Messages in iCloud current across devices A deletion may synchronize; the service itself may not contain an older version
iCloud Backup Stores information not already synced to iCloud May contain an older snapshot, but not necessarily synced Photos or Messages
Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes backup Stores most device data and settings on a computer Can be inspected or restored if the backup survives and is readable
App-specific cloud service Stores data under the app provider’s account and retention rules Recovery must use that service’s own account and restore process

Apple’s iCloud backup documentation explains that iCloud Backup covers information that is not already synced to iCloud. Apple’s backup-methods documentation also explains that content already synced to iCloud, including iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud, is not duplicated in a computer backup.

Which iPhone recovery programs are worth considering?

iMazing: best for local backups and selective export

iMazing is the strongest overall recommendation for recoverable data already present in a local backup and for people who want better backup management going forward. iMazing runs on Mac and Windows, can work with local backups created by Apple tools, uses Apple’s backup agent and protocol for its backups, and supports multiple snapshots per device according to its data-access and backup FAQ.

iMazing is useful when the goal is to inspect a backup, preserve several historical snapshots, export selected photos or messages, or create a local backup before a repair or replacement. iMazing’s “Data Access Only” mode is for extracting data and is not itself a restorable backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main limitation is central to the buying decision: iMazing relies on local backups for many data types and its FAQ says it does not currently work with iCloud backups. iMazing is therefore not a magic direct undelete tool for an iPhone with no accessible backup. A full backup can require substantial disk space; iMazing says a first backup of a 1 TB iPhone can take two hours or more in some circumstances.

Choose iMazing when: a local backup exists, selective export matters, or future backup management is more important than a speculative direct-device scan. Verify the current price and license terms on the iMazing Store because a current price was not exposed in the supplied research.

Dr.Fone: best broad all-in-one toolkit

Dr.Fone is the broadest choice when recovery is only one part of the problem and the user also wants iOS repair, transfer, or other phone utilities. Dr.Fone’s official store lists iOS Data Recovery as a separate module and advertises recovery from iOS or Android devices, iTunes or iCloud backups, and broken phones.

The displayed U.S. price snapshot checked on August 16, 2026, was $44.95 per month, $59.95 per year, or $69.95 perpetual for the listed iOS/Android recovery plan. The displayed license covered five mobile devices and two PCs or two Macs. Monthly and annual plans were shown as auto-renewing and cancellable. Prices, modules, operating-system requirements, and purchase-channel terms can change, so confirm the exact plan at the official Dr.Fone store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dr.Fone’s breadth is also its weakness. A recovery module, repair module, unlock feature, and restore process may have different requirements and data-loss risks. The App Store listing warns that results depend on iOS limits and device conditions. Do not interpret a successful system repair as proof that deleted data can be recovered.

Choose Dr.Fone when: the device also has a boot, transfer, or system problem and the user accepts the cost and complexity of a multi-module toolkit. Preview the required files before purchasing whenever the edition permits it.

PhoneRescue: a broad recovery attempt with repair features

PhoneRescue is worth considering when the user wants to try multiple advertised recovery sources and may also need iOS repair features. The official PhoneRescue for iOS page advertises recovery from the iPhone or iPad, iTunes backups, iCloud-related data, and app data.

PhoneRescue also markets iOS repair, lock-screen removal, and Screen Time passcode recovery. Those features must be evaluated separately. A passcode-related or advanced repair operation is not a data-preserving recovery method simply because it appears in the same product.

Choose PhoneRescue when: its current scan or preview identifies the exact data and the user has checked the operation’s erase risk. Do not quote a recovery percentage or promise direct recovery without a reproducible test for the relevant iPhone model, iOS version, backup state, and product edition. Current pricing was not responsibly verified in the supplied research.

EaseUS MobiSaver: dedicated iPhone and backup-source workflow

EaseUS MobiSaver is a reasonable alternative for users seeking a dedicated iPhone and iPad recovery interface. The vendor’s official MobiSaver page advertises recovery from an iPhone, iPad, iTunes backups, and iCloud backups.

The product is more narrowly marketed around iOS data recovery than an all-purpose phone-management suite. That does not establish that every advertised source will yield recoverable data on current iOS. Check whether “iCloud recovery” means a downloaded backup, access to synced content, or an account-dependent workflow, and avoid entering Apple Account credentials unless the exact process and privacy implications are understood.

A secondary Macworld comparison reported historical or observed Mac prices of $59.95 monthly, $79.95 annually, and $99.95 lifetime. Those figures should not be treated as current official prices without checking the target-country checkout page. Preview the required item before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disk Drill: best categorized as general computer-storage recovery

Disk Drill is a better fit for deleted data on Mac or Windows drives, SD cards, USB devices, and external disks than for a reader specifically seeking deleted iPhone records. CleverFiles has an iPhone recovery page, and Disk Drill is broadly positioned as a Mac and Windows data-recovery product.

The distinction matters because an iPhone does not expose its storage to a computer like an ordinary removable disk. Disk Drill’s strength in scanning computer storage does not prove equivalent iPhone recovery performance. Confirm the current iPhone module, platform support, scan behavior, and export limits separately from the desktop-drive edition. Current pricing and iPhone-module parity require verification before purchase.

Stellar iPhone Data Recovery and Tenorshare UltData

Stellar iPhone Data Recovery and Tenorshare UltData are additional mainstream products to compare, not guaranteed winners. Stellar’s official product is available at Stellar iPhone Data Recovery, while Tenorshare’s product page is UltData for iPhone.

These products may be useful when their current editions can preview the exact data from a supported source. The supplied research does not verify current prices, exact Mac and Windows parity, or reproducible current-iOS recovery results for either product. Treat broad data-type counts and “latest iOS” language as vendor claims until the exact version and test conditions are documented.

How do the main products compare?

The comparison below separates verified positioning from vendor-advertised recovery sources. “Direct scan” means the vendor markets a scan of the connected device; it does not mean that modern iOS permits universal undelete. “Unknown” means the supplied research did not verify the feature or current edition.

Product Mac / Windows Recovery sources advertised or documented Selective export or preview Repair included Pricing information Best use Main limitation
Apple native tools Mac and Windows workflows Recently Deleted, iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices, iTunes Recently Deleted is selective; full backup restore replaces device state No third-party repair suite Free First recovery attempt Full restore can require erasing a configured iPhone
iMazing Mac and Windows Local backups and connected-device backup workflows; not currently iCloud backups Strong local-backup inspection and selective export; preview depends on data type Management and backup tools, not a magic repair/unlock solution Verify current store price Local backup extraction and multiple snapshots Many data types require an accessible local backup

Which iPhone data can usually be recovered?

Recoverability depends on the data source more than the name of the software. A photo in Recently Deleted, a message in an older local backup, and a permanently deleted encrypted database record are three different recovery problems.

Data type Recently Deleted or native source iCloud sync or backup Computer backup Direct-device attempt Important qualification
Photos and videos Photos Recently Deleted may restore supported items Check iCloud Photos; synced Photos may not be in iCloud Backup May be present depending on sync and backup state Uncertain on modern iOS Do not assume a backup contains iCloud Photos
Messages and iMessage attachments Messages Recently Deleted supports recent deletions Messages in iCloud may sync deletion and may not be in iCloud Backup May be present in an accessible backup Highly dependent on iOS access and database state Apple’s supported window is generally 30–40 days on iOS 16 or later
Contacts Check Contacts and account-specific recovery May be synced to iCloud or another account May be included in a computer backup Uncertain Account sync can be more useful than a device scan
Notes Check Recently Deleted and account folders May be in iCloud or another note service May be present depending on account and backup state Uncertain Notes stored by a third-party account follow that provider’s rules
Calendars and reminders Check the relevant account Often account-synchronized May be included depending on sync status Uncertain Recover through the owning account when possible
Voice Memos Check the app and Recently Deleted if available May sync or be included in a backup depending on settings May be extractable from an accessible backup Uncertain Export immediately after finding a usable copy
Safari history and bookmarks No universal undelete guarantee May be synced through iCloud May be present in some backups Uncertain Availability varies with sync and backup configuration
WhatsApp and other app data Use the app’s own recovery or cloud backup May use an app-specific backup or server May be present but protected or incomplete Depends on app encryption and access An iPhone scanner cannot replace the app’s password or end-to-end encryption
Files in third-party cloud services Use the service’s trash or version history Controlled by that provider, not necessarily iCloud May not be in an iPhone backup Usually not a device-recovery problem Sign in through the provider’s official recovery process
Health and Activity Not ordinary media data Availability depends on Apple sync and backup settings Requires an encrypted computer backup Uncertain Apple specifically requires encryption for computer-backup inclusion
Keychain and passwords Not ordinary exportable files Protected by Apple Account and device security Requires an encrypted computer backup Not reliably recoverable by consumer software Never assume a visible backup can be read without its password
Apple Account information Not recoverable as ordinary deleted device data Use Apple’s account-recovery process Not a substitute for account credentials Do not use “bypass” claims Activation Lock and data recovery are separate issues

Can software recover permanently deleted iPhone data?

Sometimes, but only when another usable copy or an accessible remnant still exists. Recently Deleted, iCloud synchronization, an iCloud Backup, a Finder or iTunes backup, an app’s own cloud backup, or an older third-party backup can provide a recovery path.

Recovery is often unrealistic when the item was permanently deleted, excluded from every backup, overwritten, removed by a remote wipe, or protected by modern iOS encryption. Most iPhone data is not exposed to a computer as ordinary disk storage. A program that claims to scan a device without a backup may be attempting a limited, vendor-specific process, not performing the same kind of sector-by-sector undelete available on a hard drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No reputable consumer tool should promise universal recovery from a locked, reset, or encrypted iPhone without a valid credential or backup. A forgotten passcode is especially important: Apple’s supported route generally involves erasing the device and restoring from a backup, so preserving inaccessible on-device data cannot be promised.

What does an encrypted local backup change?

An encrypted local backup can contain sensitive categories that an unencrypted backup does not, but the backup password is required. Apple says Health, Activity, and Keychain data require an encrypted computer backup, as explained in Apple’s backup methods guide.

  • An application may identify an encrypted backup but be unable to read protected content without the password.
  • Do not lose or forget the encrypted-backup password; consumer recovery software cannot reliably substitute for it.
  • Copy the backup before testing extractors or restore tools.
  • Do not send a backup password to an affiliate, vendor, or “recovery expert” unless the exact necessity, custody, and privacy protections are understood.
  • An unencrypted media export is not equivalent to a complete encrypted backup and does not preserve every protected category.

How should you recover iPhone data safely?

The safest workflow preserves the original phone and every potentially useful backup before attempting scans, repairs, or restores.

  1. Preserve the evidence. Stop using the phone after a recent deletion. Keep it powered only as necessary, and avoid resets, updates, restores, and repeated repair attempts.
  2. Check native recovery. Inspect Photos Recently Deleted, Messages Recently Deleted, iCloud services, app-specific trash, and account recovery pages.
  3. Inventory backups. Record the date, size, location, and encryption status of each Finder, Apple Devices, iTunes, or iCloud backup.
  4. Protect older snapshots. Copy local backup folders to another drive. Do not assume a newly created backup is a historical backup of the deleted item.
  5. Create an encrypted backup if the phone is accessible. Unlock the iPhone, connect it by USB, tap Trust if prompted, and enter the device passcode. Use the encrypted-backup option when Health, Activity, Keychain, or other protected categories matter.
  6. Choose software by source. Use iMazing for local-backup inspection and export; use a broader tool only when its advertised source matches the case.
  7. Install software on the computer. Do not install recovery software onto the iPhone, and download desktop software only from the vendor’s official website.
  8. Preview before paying. Confirm that the actual photo, complete conversation, attachment, contact, note, or document appears—not merely a filename, thumbnail, or database entry.
  9. Export elsewhere. Save recovered data to a separate drive or folder. Preserve the original phone and backups until the export has been opened and verified.
  10. Restore only after preservation. A restore replaces the phone’s current state with an older backup and should not be the first action when newer data might still be needed.

How do you restore an iPhone from an Apple backup?

Apple’s full restore process replaces the current iPhone state with the selected backup, so selective extraction is safer when only a few items are missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore from iCloud Backup

  1. Make sure the iPhone is at the Hello screen.
  2. During setup, reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
  3. Choose From iCloud Backup.
  4. Sign in with the Apple Account.
  5. Choose a backup by date and size.
  6. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power.

If the iPhone is already set up, Apple says the device must be erased before using this full-device restore procedure. Check for newer information and preserve the current state before erasing.

Apple’s restore-from-backup instructions describe these current iCloud, Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes paths.

When will iPhone recovery software not work?

Consumer recovery software is unlikely to help when no accessible copy exists or when iPhone security prevents access to the device and its protected storage.

  • No backup or cloud copy exists: A vendor may offer a direct scan, but modern iOS restrictions make the result uncertain.
  • The phone was securely erased or remotely wiped: Recovery software is not a substitute for a surviving backup.
  • The data was overwritten or permanently removed: A database listing or thumbnail cannot recreate a complete original file.
  • The passcode is forgotten: Do not treat lock-screen bypass claims as a legitimate data-preserving solution.
  • The encrypted-backup password is missing: Protected backup categories may remain unreadable.
  • The phone cannot boot or establish trust: Software may not be able to create or read a usable backup.
  • Storage or Secure Enclave hardware has failed: A professional service may be the only rational option, and even professional work cannot guarantee recovery.
  • The data was never stored locally: Third-party cloud data, app-server data, and account records must be recovered through the owning service.

What if the iPhone is damaged, locked, or disabled?

Condition Safest next step What software can realistically do
Broken screen or battery, but the phone boots Repair the minimum hardware needed to unlock and trust the phone A backup or extraction may be possible once the phone is stable and trusted
Boot loop or recovery-mode problem Check whether a repair mode preserves data before starting Some repairs may preserve data; advanced restore operations may erase it
Water or board damage Stop powering on the phone and consult a qualified professional Repeated consumer scans or charging attempts may reduce the chance of recovery
Forgotten passcode Use Apple’s supported erase-and-restore route if a backup exists No consumer program can promise preservation of inaccessible on-device data
Activation Lock or Apple Account lock Recover the account through Apple’s legitimate process Account lock and data recovery are separate; do not recommend bypass tools
Dead storage or Secure Enclave Seek professional data-recovery or board-repair advice Consumer software is unlikely to overcome cryptographic or physical failure

How should you judge a recovery program?

Judge software by its recovery source, preview quality, privacy handling, and export result—not by the number of supported data types or a single claimed success rate.

  • Recovery source: Does the program read a live iPhone, local backup, iCloud-related source, or app-specific cloud data?
  • Data types: Does the relevant edition handle the missing photos, messages, contacts, notes, app data, or encrypted categories?
  • Preview quality: Does the preview show the complete item or only metadata and thumbnails?
  • Selective export: Can one conversation, contact, photo, or note be exported without replacing the entire phone?
  • Backup safety: Can the program work from a copied backup and create a new backup before scanning?
  • Trust and passcode: Does the phone need to be unlocked, trusted, or connected with the backup password?
  • Platform compatibility: Check the specific iOS module, macOS version, Windows version, Apple silicon or Intel support, and Apple Devices versus iTunes workflow.
  • Privacy: Find out whether processing is local, whether an account is required, whether backup files are uploaded, and what permissions the program requests.
  • Pricing: Compare monthly, annual, and perpetual licenses, device and computer limits, module restrictions, auto-renewal, refunds, and upgrade terms.
  • Evidence quality: Prefer transparent tests that distinguish data found, data previewed, and data successfully exported under a stated iPhone model, iOS version, and backup condition.

What is the final recommendation?

Use Apple’s free recovery options first, then choose software according to the surviving source. iMazing is the most defensible overall paid recommendation for local-backup inspection, multiple snapshots, and selective export on Mac and Windows. Dr.Fone is the broadest alternative when repair and transfer tools matter too. PhoneRescue and EaseUS MobiSaver are recovery attempts worth considering only after their previews show the required data. Disk Drill belongs primarily in the Mac/Windows drive-recovery category.

Do not buy several programs in the hope that one will defeat iPhone encryption. If the phone is locked, physically damaged, erased, remotely wiped, or missing every usable backup, preserve the device and consult a professional recovery service before experimenting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover permanently deleted iPhone photos without a backup?

Permanently deleted iPhone photos may be unrecoverable without a backup or another copy. Check Photos Recently Deleted, iCloud Photos, shared libraries, and the photo app’s own cloud service before trying third-party software; modern iOS security prevents a universal direct undelete from the phone.

Can I recover deleted iMessages without a backup?

Apple supports recovering recently deleted messages from Messages Recently Deleted on iOS 16 or later, generally within 30–40 days. Outside that window, recovery depends on an iCloud or computer backup, an app or account copy, or a vendor-specific result that should not be treated as guaranteed.

Is iPhone recovery software safe?

iPhone recovery software can be safer when it processes a copied local backup, previews data before payment, and exports files locally. Recovery programs may handle private messages, photos, health records, contacts, and backup passwords, so download only from official vendor sites and review cloud-upload, account, and permission requirements.

Can recovery software recover data from a locked iPhone?

Recovery software cannot reliably recover data from a locked iPhone when the passcode is unavailable and no usable backup exists. A known passcode may allow the phone to be unlocked and trusted; a forgotten passcode generally leads to Apple’s destructive erase-and-restore process.

Does iCloud Backup include iCloud Photos and Messages in iCloud?

iCloud Backup generally does not duplicate content that is already synced through iCloud, including iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud. Check the synced service itself and its Recently Deleted or account-recovery options rather than assuming an iCloud Backup contains an older copy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The best iPhone data recovery software for Mac and Windows in 2026 is the software that matches the location of the missing data. Start with Apple’s free tools. Use iMazing for accessible local backups and selective export, Dr.Fone for a broader recovery-and-repair toolkit, and other recovery suites only when a preview demonstrates that the required data can actually be exported.
