For sharper iPhone photos, start by tapping your subject to set focus, then adjust exposure only if the image is too bright or dark. For finer detail, choose an appropriate photo resolution on a supported model—but remember that more megapixels cannot fix missed focus, camera shake, or a moving subject. The Camera app normally handles focus and exposure automatically; the settings below help when you need more control.
Start with focus and exposure for sharper photos
Open Camera and tap the part of the scene you want in focus. The focus area moves to that point, and iPhone adjusts exposure for the shot. If the brightness needs a correction, use the exposure control beside the focus area to make the image lighter or darker.
When you want focus and exposure to stay fixed—for example, while recomposing a shot—touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. Tap the screen to unlock. These are manual adjustments to iPhone’s usual automatic behavior; see Apple’s camera tools guide.

Choose camera settings for better detail
On supported iPhones, the default Main or Fusion camera photo resolution can be 12 MP or 24 MP. Some models also offer 48 MP capture. To check what your device supports, look in Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode. For 48 MP photos, enable Resolution Control or ProRAW & Resolution Control, depending on the model, then choose the resolution or format in Camera. Apple describes these options in its advanced camera settings guide.

Resolution is only one part of perceived detail. A 48 MP setting cannot make an out-of-focus subject sharp or remove blur from movement or an unsteady capture. For the best chance of retaining fine detail, use higher resolution when the subject is still, tap the point you want focused, and hold the phone steady.
Fix blurry close-ups with macro controls
On supported iPhones, Camera can automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera for macro photography when you move close to a subject. Apple says the subject can be as close as 2 cm. If a close-up looks blurry, back up or tap .5x to switch to Ultra Wide, as described in Apple’s macro photo instructions.

Supported models may also offer Macro Control, which gives you more say over macro switching. If you prefer a consistent choice between sessions, you can preserve that control’s state where available; see Apple’s Save camera settings guide.
Know what rapid-shooting and rendering settings change
Prioritize Faster Shooting
Prioritize Faster Shooting changes image processing so iPhone can capture more photos during rapid shutter taps, and Apple says it is on by default. The setting is useful when taking a quick series, but Apple’s documentation does not establish that turning it off universally makes photos sharper. Treat it as a speed-versus-processing behavior, not a general detail fix. Find it under Settings > Camera on supported models.

Lens Correction
Lens Correction adjusts supported front-camera and Ultra Wide photos for a more natural-looking result and is on by default. It affects rendering and perspective, not whether the camera focused correctly. If you prefer the uncorrected look, check whether your iPhone offers the setting under Settings > Camera; Apple documents it in the advanced camera settings guide.
Photographic Styles
Photographic Styles change the color and tone of images on supported cameras. Choose one to shape the look you want, not to correct missed focus or motion blur. See Apple’s Photographic Styles guide for supported options.

Keep useful camera settings between sessions
If you routinely use the same setup, Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings can retain selected camera states on supported models. Options can include exposure adjustment, Macro Control, and Night mode. Enable only the states you want to carry into the next session; the exact choices depend on your iPhone and software. Apple lists the available controls in its Save camera settings guide.
Check the camera before changing settings
If photos remain unexpectedly soft, check that the lens is clean and that your subject is not moving. Apple says supported iPhones can offer lens-cleaning suggestions to help achieve the sharpest photo. A settings change cannot compensate for a smudged lens, movement, or focus placed on the wrong part of the scene.

Why menus and options may differ
Camera features and menu labels depend on the iPhone model and software version. The paths above apply only where the option is supported; check Settings > Camera to see what is available on your device. Apple’s current advanced-settings documentation is its iOS 27 guide, but that does not mean every iPhone supports every feature described there.
