There is no general U.S. internet discount based on age alone. Older adults may qualify for federal Lifeline or provider low-cost plans based on income, public-assistance benefits, or—in some states—specific eligibility rules. The best option depends on the household’s address and eligibility, so check the final price and terms with the provider before signing up.
Do seniors get a discount on internet?
Not usually just because they are seniors. The federal and provider programs described here base eligibility mainly on income or participation in qualifying assistance programs. Some state-specific rules include age-related pathways, but those do not establish a nationwide senior discount.
For example, Spectrum says adults 65 or older who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may qualify for Internet Assist. That is an SSI-based eligibility route, not a discount available to every older adult. Check Spectrum Internet Assist eligibility.
Which internet assistance programs are available?
Federal Lifeline
Lifeline can discount qualifying monthly telephone service, broadband service, or bundled voice-and-broadband service purchased from participating providers. Eligibility and provider participation matter, and not every internet company participates. Review the official Lifeline support site to check eligibility and find participating providers.

Provider low-cost plans
Internet Essentials from Xfinity, Spectrum Internet Assist, and AT&T Access from AT&T are examples of low-cost plans for eligible households. Their rules differ, and availability depends on the address. A household may qualify for one plan but not another.
State-specific eligibility
Xfinity and AT&T identify New York eligibility routes that include a senior citizen rent increase exemption. This is a state-specific pathway, not a general age-only discount available nationwide. Check the program’s current rules and confirm that the service is offered at your address.

Can seniors still get the Affordable Connectivity Program?
No. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) ended on June 1, 2024, and enrollment is closed. The FCC warns consumers to be cautious of pages that still claim to enroll people in ACP or request personal information for enrollment. If you encounter such a site, follow the FCC’s guidance in its ACP consumer advisory.

How to find the cheapest internet available at your address
- Check which providers report service at the address. Search the home address in the FCC National Broadband Map to see reported providers, technologies, and maximum advertised speeds. The map relies on provider-reported data, so confirm availability and the actual offer directly with the provider.
- Check Lifeline. Review eligibility and see whether a participating provider serves the address through the Lifeline support site.
- Check each provider’s own qualification rules. Review income limits or qualifying benefit programs, coverage, prior-customer restrictions, and outstanding-account requirements. Do not assume that one provider’s eligibility decision applies to another.
- Compare the full cost and terms. Check the regular price after any introductory period, installation and equipment charges, speed, contract requirements, and data limits. A low starting price is not enough to identify the cheapest plan over time.
- Ask about included equipment before buying anything. Confirm whether the provider supplies a modem or Wi-Fi gateway and whether a router you already own is compatible. Xfinity describes a Wi-Fi Gateway in its Internet Essentials setup kit; check the specific plan and equipment terms before purchasing additional hardware.
How to choose a plan that fits the household
Start with the household’s actual needs rather than the word “senior” in a plan search. A plan must be available at the address and affordable at its ongoing price; its speed and terms must also suit how the household uses the internet. If several low-cost offers are available, compare them on those same points and apply only after confirming each provider’s current eligibility requirements.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Price: Compare the recurring monthly charge, not just a starting or promotional figure. Include equipment and installation fees.
- Speed: Compare the advertised speed with the household’s needs, and remember that the FCC map displays maximum advertised speeds reported by providers.
- Data and contract terms: Check for data limits, contract commitments, and any charges that could change the total cost.
- Eligibility: Make sure the household meets the particular plan’s requirements, including any prior-service or account-balance conditions.
- Coverage: Confirm service and the exact offer with the provider even if the FCC map lists it.
Because availability and plan terms vary by location and provider, the official information does not establish a single cheapest or best plan nationwide. The right choice is the lowest-cost offer that the household qualifies for at its address and that meets its needs on the provider’s full terms.
