The best instant camera depends first on the print you want and how you want to take it. For compact, simple analog photos, consider the Fujifilm Instax mini 13. For wider group and landscape shots, consider the Instax WIDE 400. If you want to preview or select images before printing, look at hybrid models; if you want an analog alternative with creative controls, consider Polaroid’s Now+ range. These are different fits, not a universal ranking.
Choose the print format first
Instant film is not one interchangeable size. Fujifilm’s lineup separates Instax mini, SQUARE, and WIDE cameras and film, so choose the print shape and size before choosing a camera. Fujifilm describes WIDE prints as twice as wide as mini prints, which can suit group photos and broader compositions. SQUARE is the option for square framing. - Instax mini: Compact prints and a broad choice of mini-format cameras.
- Instax SQUARE: Square prints; use SQUARE-format film and a compatible camera.
- Instax WIDE: Larger, wider prints for group pictures or scenes that benefit from a broader frame.
Choose analog or hybrid
Analog: expose film directly
An analog instant camera exposes a sheet of film when you take a picture. Fujifilm’s lineup labels its analog models separately from hybrid models. The Instax mini 13 is a straightforward mini-format analog option, with simple operation, a selfie mode, and a self-timer listed by Fujifilm U.S. Check the U.S. product listing for its current details.
Hybrid: add digital capture or selection
If you would rather preview or select images before making an instant print, consider a hybrid camera. Fujifilm lists hybrid models as a separate category from analog cameras; check the manufacturer’s local product page for current models and features. A hybrid workflow can reduce unwanted prints, but it is not the same as a camera that exposes film directly for every shot.

Match camera features to the pictures you take
For an easy compact camera: Fujifilm Instax mini 13
The mini 13 is a good fit if you want a mini-format analog camera with uncomplicated operation and built-in help for self-portraits. Fujifilm U.S. lists selfie mode and a self-timer. It does not make the format decision for you: you will need Instax mini film.
For wider group or landscape prints: Fujifilm Instax WIDE 400
The WIDE 400 uses WIDE film and offers a wider print than the mini format. Fujifilm U.S. lists a self-timer, close-up lens, and camera-angle adjustment. Those features can help with group portraits and close subjects, but the viewfinder may not show the exact framing the film records at close range.

For an analog alternative with creative modes: Polaroid Go
Polaroid describes its Go family as a small analog range, with a selfie mirror, self-timer, and double-exposure mode. It uses its own compatible film format, so do not assume Instax film will work in it. Check the Polaroid U.S. camera listings for current Go products and compatibility.

Polaroid positions Now+ as its more advanced range, with features including aperture priority and remote controls. It may suit someone who wants more creative control than a simple point-and-shoot provides. Those are manufacturer-described features, not evidence that it outperforms other cameras in independent comparative testing.

Check film compatibility and what the box includes
Film compatibility follows the camera format. Fujifilm’s guidance pairs mini film with mini cameras and printers, SQUARE film with SQUARE products, and WIDE film with WIDE cameras or the WIDE printer. Polaroid Go film is likewise specific to compatible Go cameras. Confirm the film type on the camera’s product page before buying a refill.
Fujifilm’s official guide says cameras do not come with film. Retailers may offer bundles, so check the package contents rather than assuming a starter pack is included. The same check matters when buying a gift: a camera without compatible film cannot produce prints until film is purchased.

Estimate the ongoing cost before you buy
The camera’s purchase price is only part of the cost. Compare the current local price of the camera, whether film is included, the price of compatible film packs, and how often you expect to shoot. Film prices and bundles vary by retailer, region, and date, so there is no reliable universal per-print figure here. A hybrid workflow that lets you select images may help avoid printing shots you do not want, while an analog workflow prints each exposure directly.

At close range, the viewfinder and lens do not necessarily see the same framing. Fujifilm’s official Instax UK beginner guide warns: “What you see in the viewfinder isn’t always what the film captures, especially if you’re taking an up-close shot.” This difference, called parallax, can shift a close subject in the final image.

- Leave some extra space around a close subject instead of framing tightly in the viewfinder.
- Use a camera’s close-up accessory or selfie mode as directed in its manual.
- For a group selfie, use the timer and position the camera securely before everyone moves into place.
