The best indoor air quality monitor depends on which pollutants you want to track. For broad household coverage, the Airthings View Plus lists radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and pressure. If your main goal is following CO2 and ventilation patterns, the Aranet4 HOME is a more focused choice. Neither is a substitute for dedicated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and consumer sensors should be treated as useful signals—not regulatory-grade proof that a home is safe.
Which indoor air quality monitor should you choose?
| Need | Example | What it measures | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Track a broad set of household pollutants | Airthings View Plus | Radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, humidity, temperature, and pressure | The manufacturer lists a broad sensor suite, but each sensor has its own measurement method and limitations. It is not a smoke or CO alarm. Airthings View Plus and Airthings technical specifications. |
| Follow CO2 and ventilation patterns | Aranet4 HOME | CO2, temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure | Its published measurement list does not include PM2.5, VOCs, or radon. See Aranet’s measurement overview and Aranet4 HOME product details. |
| Reduce particles after identifying a concern | Portable air cleaner or HVAC filter | Filtration equipment, not a monitor | EPA says air cleaners and HVAC filters can reduce indoor pollution but cannot remove every pollutant. Choose equipment for the pollutant and space or system involved: EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. |
What pollutants should a home monitor measure?
Start with the question you want answered, then check the product’s exact measurement list. “Air quality” is not one measurement: a device detects only the pollutants or environmental factors its sensors are designed to measure. EPA’s consumer guidance on low-cost monitors explains that sensor sets vary by product.
- Radon: Choose a monitor that explicitly lists radon if you want ongoing radon readings. A CO2-focused monitor is not a substitute.
- PM2.5: Look for particulate matter measurement if you want to follow fine-particle changes, such as those associated with smoke or other particle sources.
- CO2: CO2 trends can help you assess ventilation patterns, but CO2 is not a measure of every pollutant in a room.
- VOCs: Confirm that volatile organic compounds are included in the product’s stated targets; do not assume a monitor measures them because it has an overall air-quality score.
- Humidity and temperature: These are useful environmental readings, but they do not replace pollutant measurements.
The View Plus is the broader of the two examples in this comparison. The Aranet4 HOME is designed around CO2 measurement and also lists temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure.

Use readings to notice patterns and decide what to investigate, not as a diagnosis or a guarantee that the air is safe. EPA cautions that low-cost sensors may produce questionable readings or a consistent high or low bias. Performance can vary with the pollutant, mixtures of pollutants, and concentration range. Its air-sensor FAQ describes these limitations.

- Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
- Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
Measurement method, calibration, and sampling also matter. Airthings lists an NDIR sensor for CO2, a laser-scattering particle counter for PM2.5, and alpha spectrometry for radon in the View Plus. Its technical page describes pollutant-specific accuracy and sampling details. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent head-to-head test of the monitor against alternatives.
For context, Airthings lists View Plus CO2 measurement from 400 to 5,000 ppm. It gives PM2.5 error as ±10 μg/m³ from 0 to 100 μg/m³ and ±10% from 100 to 200 μg/m³. For radon, it lists precision of about 10% for a seven-day average after a settling period, with precision improving after two months. These are the manufacturer’s published specifications on its technical page, not guarantees for every home or independent test results.

Can an air quality monitor replace a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm?
No. Keep dedicated smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in the home, installed in appropriate locations. A general-purpose indoor air quality monitor is not a reliable replacement for either life-safety alarm; Airthings’ View Plus product guidance treats smoke and CO alarms as separate warning devices.

Look for repeated patterns and possible sources rather than reacting to one number in isolation. EPA says monitor readings can help people decide whether source removal, more ventilation, or supplemental filtration may help. For example, if particle readings rise repeatedly during a particular activity, investigate whether that activity is a source before choosing a response.

- Check the pattern. Compare readings over time and note when, where, and during which activities changes occur.
- Investigate possible sources. Consider whether an activity, product, or condition coincides with the change, and address a source when practical.
- Choose an intervention for the pollutant. Ventilation, source removal, or filtration may be appropriate in different situations; filtration does not address every pollutant.
- Use a suitable cleaner or filter for particles. EPA’s home air-cleaner guide explains that portable air cleaners and HVAC filters can reduce indoor pollution, but cannot remove all pollutants.
A monitor can help guide investigation, but an air-quality score by itself is not proof of a specific hazard—or proof that a home is safe.
